- Overcrowding is becoming more common on the transit system in Metro Vancouver, and commuters are speaking up. As Janella Hamilton reports, some say things could get worse, unless more funding comes in.

Yes we badly need more comprehensive transit. We even need better Metro/SkyTrain network.
@@mattl4802If we had the population to justify heavy rail, sure.
@@AlCatSplat If we don't yet then we definitely will. Translink should be learning lessons from the Canada Line and building projects with the future of the city in mind, especially with recent immigration numbers and need to expand the city
It's been overcrowded for nearly 20 year's but thanks for coming out.
I never had issues til recently. Tryna get to work on a Wednesday afternoon is a chore now, especially there’s ALWAYS someone who has a giant bike or electric scooter on board! I get so annoyed by them for occupying such a large amount of space when they could literally be riding from a certain stop instead of stealing a spot that at least 3 people could be standing in to get to downtown Vancouver
This is why people end up buying a car. Also cause all money goes to car infrastructure
Richmond 403 never has any space, especially when it’s only once every 30 mins
Are they actively working towards resolving the issue at hand? or are they solely now becoming aware of the problem?
They say Canada has the best liveable cities.....😂😂
Believe it or not, it's still true... If you have to walk places, you can. A lot of places simply don't have safe sidewalks.
It's been feeling incredibly crowded on langley transit for a while now, it's insane
And it’s annoying when you have to go to Aldergrove in rush hours. The 503 used to pick up only, no drop off until after Langley centre. I missed that system it never was crowded.
We need more immigrants and less housing please
We need a tram system like Europe has, as well as Australia. What’s the hold up? Granville street is already laid out for it. All that’s missing are the tracks. Come on already.
Other cities in Canada like Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton has it’s system.
Vancouver only has Skytrain.
Some trolley bus routes( like 3, 10) can change to tram system
Toronto is the only system in Canada with a tram system, and it is a extremely outdated and badly maintained one... We should take inspiration from Europe for trams, not our North American neighbours. @@aproy5256
horrendous scheduling, quite often I wait 30-40 mins for a 250 bus just for THREE 250 busses to show up back to back at the same time.
The West Van buses are particularly bad, and that whole area is bottlenecked on the Lion's Gate Bridge, too... But the 250 buses are particularly bad, I remember at times taking the 240 and then walking West because it was faster than waiting for the 250.
It's just a scheduling issue, it's a bunching issue. When a bus falls behind for any reason, more people wait at the stop, which results in longer dwell times and it falling further behind. Dedicated bus lanes and more frequent headways to begin with would help.
This is why I own a car and would rather drive instead.
The Langley skytrain and UBC extension can't come soon enough. Heck if they extended the Skytrain out to Abbotsford and made the West Coast Express more than a commuter train during specific hours, maybe more people would move out to Abbotsford, Maple Ridge and Mission.
Also west costth should extend to klowna with
300+ km high speed
@@muttfreeworld - That would be incredible. It should take 6+ hours for the average person to get from Vancouver to Kelowna. Airplane doesn't count for the average person.
@@BassBwoy3 @ 300km/h it will take 1:50 @ most not 6+ hr
@@muttfreeworld That should have said 'should not'. But yeah, under 2 hours to get to Kelowna by rail would be great.
We're going through a housing and climate crisis at the same time as congestion is becoming too much to bear for most commuters. It's time to build more skytrain, and not just a handful of KM over a decade but something like 100km-200km within the next twenty years. Other cities have done that to great success. Just look at Santiago's metro development. We need a full transit build out with densified rental housing at every station, because that would solve half of the problems we face. Either we do that, or Metro Vancouver continues to become less livable year by year.
Transit keeps on increasing fare, but doesn't do anything to improve services
Unfortunately the bus depot for surrey is fairly small compared to others in the region and they don't have a lot of room for expansion of bus service.
More double deckers is needed
Double decker busses are expensive.
@@aproy5256 They are , but what isn't ?
@@5100yes
Other diesel busses(XD40) or commuter shuttle are not super expensive.
And one of the problem of double deckers is that it’s takes time to get off and ride. It’s only useful in highway bus routes.
That is an issue no doubt , but people have been asking for more busses till the end of time . If more Double deckers are implemented, i'm not saying have all double deckers all over , but maybe add trippers for most peak hours. @@aproy5256
You could eliminate 25% of people if you remove the fare evaders.
I visited Vancouver in 2008 and it wasn't like that. We spent a couple of days there before our cruise and took the bus to Chinatown. We waljed around and had a great meal and then walked to the Sky train just to try it out. It was cool.
You know the area you are talking about is more than 30km away from where the over crowding CBC is reporting on right?
@@lucienblanchette3134 Yes, but I don't think you had that overcrowding in that area when I visited either. We went around different areas of the city. I was just referring to the times we took public transit. We used taxis to go to other bars and restaurants.
Unlike your very specific visit to the city core over 10 years ago, we all actually LIVE here and experience being crowded every day! I very much doubt you went to Surrey or Langley, as they are quite far and there are no tourist activities in those areas. Heck, when you visited, the Canada Line wasnt even open yet. @@mrxman581
Public transit in Canada needs to be expanded - it needs to be more affordable than driving, and it needs more routes.
Municipalities just just put up the cash and run more busses. This isn't complicated. Don't make things more complicated than they seem.
The problem is is that there are too many people. It’s great that we’re getting more cultural diversity in Canada and that we’re helping people. But eventually these countries need to start helping their own people, and being fair to them and providing their basic needs. People need to feel safe, and that their government is looking out for their best interests. All these wars need to stop. Greed needs to stop.
Yes, there needs to be more extensive bus service everywhere. We also have an employment crisis, so it’s no wonder Canada is taking in people.
We do not have an "employment crisis"
We have too many people. Plain and simple. And with the minimum wage so high, there's no difference between a useless fast food job and an entry level maintenance job, so why do the maintenance work when you can screw around and flip burgers at 1/4 of the effort for the same pay?
More cultural diversity is great when you're looking for a new restaurant, not so great when they bring their ethnic rivalries and religious hatred with them.
Non westerners don't blab on about diversity, so why should we ? Diversity kiterally cause the housing crisis fir Canadians and created mass homelessness. Diversity is not our strength bud
Poor city planning. They can solve many transit issues by making a city more cycle and walking friendly instead of urban sprawl and low density housing.
How about less immigration?
and what about people in wheelchairs that need vehicles. clearly you've group thought this through.

I can’t even use HandyDART to get to work, let alone use public transit anymore ever since last year. I have to likely rely on Uber or a caregiver to help get me from point A to point B.
Hello are you open to sharing your story with us? Kindly send us an email at cbcnewsvancouver@cbc.ca. Hoping to hear from you.
ever since the covid thing transit has sucked so bad. before i remember it was busy but not like today.
The wait times are insane too sometimes.. 30 mins on a weekday on the north shore is unacceptable.
and your drivers don’t want to work in overcrowded buses. first time i’ve seen the seabus have lines going out the terminal.
i mean it’s crazy this joke of a transit agency should get its act together. get rid of that CEO he does nothing.
One first step would be to force folks to pay to use the bus. So many people on the bus routes I take hop on at the back and don't pay or tap in. Lost revenue makes it more expensive for the rest of us and hinders expansion.
Yep
Instead of more funding from tax payers, take a look internally and reduce costs first. If the government were run like an actual business they wouldn't needlessly spend on useless things. Tax payers already cover more than their share and it's clearly not working so something ultimately needs to change internally such as government pension plans.
Keep the borders open.
Yes more immigration 😂
Vancouver, Burnaby, New West (Hamilton) Richmond and North Van →okay, sometimes crowded bus( like 99, R4 or 100, 22, 257, 240, 130) 😐
Port Coquitlam→Almost empty 😌
Surrey →too much passengers whole the day. I will be tired just for commuting. 😩😵
Many routes( R1, 319, 321, 503, 364, 345 and others) are crowded every times and usually delays. Not only passengers, drivers looks super tired in this area.
Yeah, Vancouver buses are usually pretty good. I think that extending the ebike rebate would help able bodied transit riders use that instead. But of course they made that rebate a tiny limited thing, vs the electric car rebate where they just hand out money to drivers.
You have to get to a point of stop buying 40 foot standard buses and only by 60 foot articulated buses. Change the route if needed to accommodate the larger buses. Get over the 60 foot length max and adopt longer buses like other countries. 1 driver for a 40 foot bus or 1 driver for an 80 foot bi-articulated bus??
Mr Quinn, CEO of Translink, needs to know that the system is already critically overcrowded: it's not in the future, it's right now.
It doesn't look like a G7 country to me; it looks like a developing country. hahaha
Italy, France, The UK, Germany, Japan, if you think they are doing better than Canada then you need to have your head examine
Well, our society is built for cars, which is why you have this type of issues. It is mostly a North American problem.
@@joeisawesome540
Because its founders wanted little to do with Europe and the overcrowding, centralized power structure, etc. it was plagued with.
Get Trudeau to buy more busses since immigration is a Federal matter.
Maybe more buses from those big fat student tuition from immigrants would make sense?
use Double Deckers
This is what an NDP vote looks like in real life.
Don't build more busses! Otherwise the value of our existing busses will depreciate in value. Having bought 3 investment busses just last summer and we'd like to flip when the demand is high enough.
Translink steals more than enough money from every liter of gas, we drivers pump in our cars. PURE GREED as usual 😢
Surrey should have gone for the LRT instead of voting against it
No. We only need to look at other cities in Canada to see how unreliable it is and the traffic it causes. Skytrain is way more efficient, moving people much faster regardless of road traffic.
@@Dudelsackpfeifer Surrey has comparable density to Calgary and their LRT is fine and good - and the Surrey alignment had less traffic conflicts than Calgary's
@@forivall It just seemed like an expensive project with few benefits when cheaper alternatives exist, like bus lanes and longer buses like the ones they have in Metz, France. It's essentially a tram on tires, and if it breaks down it doesn't prevent all other buses behind it from continuing their service. If we hadn't voted against LRT we wouldn't have the skytrain extension to Langley.
@@Dudelsackpfeifer but SkyTrain has that same problem with "if it breaks down it stops other trains from their service". Seems silly for that to be a point when your desired alternative is SkyTrain. And we all know that drivers will raise a ruckus if they lose their lanes to dedicated bus lanes. And there's the effect that rail is permanent infrastructure - there's a sticking power such that it's harder to just go and revert it back to car traffic.
@@forivall Good point about that flaw in my argument. Although if a skytrain breaks down, it doesn't affect car traffic. As for drivers losing their lanes, that would happen with trams too, unless the roads are widened, which can happen to accommodate buses too, without having to install rails. But I really recommend looking up the tram-like buses in Metz, France. I had the pleasure of riding them a few years ago and I really think they'd be a great alternative
Its becoming more apparent to me that Metro Vancouver was built around the fact that there arent that many people living in the area.
Make e-bikes and e-scooters legal and a good chunk of the problem would go away.
Meanwhile, the climate cultists drive around in their SUV’s…
Clearly those people are not driving around in SUVs? If they cared about the climate like most of them do, they drive evs. But most people don’t care.

Always love when everyone just blames the immigrants.
Crime rate being high: blame the immigrants.
Housing cost rising: blame the immigrants.
Failing transportation: immigrants.
Really love how this country has fallen to blaming minority groups as simple explanations to complex situations.

Yes because what happens to a country that brings in more immigrants while being slow to building housing transit and public services

ah, the carbon tax should help with this....use it to get more busses! on wait, its used to fuel trudeau's planes and pockets
The carbon tax is revenue neutral, so how would that help
Some of Vancouver's bus drivers are ignored to the passengers. I would like to shared acknowledge of my experiences that when I was approaching to just a few steps to bus stop the driver is not waiting for just less than 30 seconds. The bus driver speeds up immediately, Coast Mountain Bus company should strictly supervise or keeping eye on them.
The bus does not wait for you. You wait for the bus.

Why is Canada taking in so many immigrants when it cannot accommodate such huge numbers. All this country needs is cheap labour but skilled people end up immigranting in large numbers thinking Canada has lot of opportunities.
Canada has nothing to offer to skilled professionals.
