  • Prince Siddhartha renounced the material world in search of enlightenment at the age of 29 years. He left the capital city of Kapilvastu and finally reached the town of Uruvela. Siddhartha attained supreme enlightenment under the Bodhi tree at the age of 35 years on the full moon night of Vesak month and became Buddha, the Awakened One. The town of Uruvela is now known as Bodhgaya and it has remained one of the most important pilgrimage sites for Buddhists across the world for more than 2000 years. Mahabodhi temple marks the place where Buddha attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

The absolute truth of sentient existence was revealed by Lord Buddha. The Maha Bodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree are holy sites , symbolic of wisdom and enlightenment. India should be honoured to have had the Great Master originate His Message of Hope for the world on its soil, and grant total control of the site to the International Buddhist Community in perpetuity.

They built up a high stone fence around the tree. When I was there in the mid-'70s, I could go and sit under the tree myself all night long to sit zen.j The fence was just three rows high and you could easily climb over it and go and sit in front of the Buddha seat and meditate under the tree. It's sad that you can't do that anymore, but I hope it will keep the tree safe from some of the crazies around these days! Thank you for this very nice short history of the temple and the recent photos of its current state. It looks beautiful compared to the 70s and I'm so happy to see the international interest that has been taken to restore, repair, and increase the beauty of the temple and its grounds. Im sure the sleepy little two-horse town of Bodh Gaya has really benefitted from this.

The last abbot of Mahabodhi temple was also named Sariputra (1335-1426 AD). He left Bodhgaya and he spent most of his life in china, after spending some time in Nepal and Tibet.

It’s the Yama, the devil himself, is the real creator of human suffering. The Lord Buddha just taught us how to defeat Yama, lord of Dukkha, sufferings. Destructions of the Buddha’s teachings, relics are simply meaningless. It will not eliminate your sufferings. Please study the Buddha’s teachings, the 4 Noble Truths. Thousands of smart and compassionate Indian who studied the Buddha’s teachings, attained enlightenment. Some attained enlightenment within a few months. When was the last time someone heard of a teaching that will make you, even more benevolence than Heavenly beings? I wish the left over should learn from their enlightened ancestors and get rid of Yama from within themselves. Don’t take me wrong, Hindu is a very compassionate, kind religion. Just Hindu believers who does not learn the Lord Buddha’s teachings, can’t get rid of Yama from within and from surrounding. Thus their sufferings continued. Loving kindness to everyone.

You don't say whether the Hindus took over the temple forcibly or merely took over a decaying Buddhist temple and installed a Shivalinga. If Hindus did it forcibly, it was wrong; but I doubt that it happened that way. Hindus have great respect for others' beliefs.

China is now ready to embrace buddhism as its own by establishing nepal as the birth place of buddha and ignoring india, where india dont show any support for buddhism, though beings its own culture and with beautiful historical facts. Indian has to support buddhism and claim back its history as buddhism is now a globle religion practice by many people all around world and especially Asia.

Not really. Take a look at the history of Anandha Bodhi tree.
The people of Savatthi were fortunate to frequently meet with the Buddha, listen to his dis-courses and perform dana. However, according to the Commentary to KalingaBodhi Jataka ( Ja 479), when the Buddha was not at Jetavana Monastery, the lay people who could not meet him were very disappointed. Ana-thapindika approached Ven Ananda, one of the foremost disciples of the Buddha, and asked him for a solution to this problem. Ven Ananda then asked the Buddha how many types of cetiya (pagoda) there were to represent the Buddha as an object of worship for the lay people when he was not around.
During the Buddha’s time, people did not draw portraits of the Buddha or create statues in his image. They felt that to do so would be an insult to him as the Buddha was a perfectly formed being and nothing cre-ated by man would be able to do justice to his image. In fact, for a few hundred years after his parinibbana , no such objects were created.
The Buddha said that 3 types of cetiya could represent him:
Saririka Cetiya - this is derived from the remnants of his cremated body after his parinibbana. At that moment in time, the Buddha was still alive so this cetiya was not available.
Paribhogika Cetiya - the things used by the Buddha such as his alms bowl, his robes or the Bodhi tree. The Bodhi tree is regarded as a cetiya as it was used to shelter him from the elements when he was striving to achieve enlightenment.
Udissaka Cetiya - this is a symbolic cetiya that represents the Buddha and his teachings. One of them is the Dhammacakka (the Buddhist Wheel.Another example is the Lord Buddha's footprints.
tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment was located in Bodhagaya, which was far away from Savatthi. Ven Ananda then requested the Buddha for permission to transplant a seed from this tree to Savatthi. The Buddha gave his consent. Ven Ananda asked Ven Moggallana (the foremost dis-ciple of the Buddha who was known for his psychic powers) to obtain a seed for him using his psychic abilities. Moggallana then collected the seed from the Bodhi tree and carried it in his robes to Savatthi.

There are great numbers of Holy cave in Tibet, Nepal and India where our second Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava meditated, practiced and gained siddhi......these are very Sacred place to visit and worship by all Buddhist. Same goes for Shiva followers as well. Ofcourse, Bodhgaya is the Holiest place where our great Lord Buddha got enlightened under the Bodhi Tree.
