    whoa... i just learned that a dvd set i bought for 14.99 at walmart in 2009 is worth up to 150 bucks. nice. I just assumed this set was common and my unaltered version is nice to have. had no clue it was rare.I mean, i knew it was a nice package but no clue it was that nice. Score! Holding onto that

    I actually ordered both brand new and sealed for a decent price. The boxes were creased and had some damage, But the seller did acknowledge that. However when they arrived, The outside damage caused some damage to a few of the cases. One of them had a bad crack in it. The seller was very cooperative and is sending me replacement slim cases to compensate for the damaged ones.

      @@ChronoRadio I am currently 16, and i got the original trilogy set for Easter of 2010 when i was 8 years old followed by the prequel trilogy set about 1 month later and they were the most recent version of star wars at that time. Fun Fact: Young 8-9 year old me one day decided to watch the bonus discs of the OT, and when i watched the unaltered cuts of the films, i had no idea what they were and was absolutely confused as to why they were so different from the post 2004 altered films that i had already watched, only a year or two later upon doing research to discover that they were the original versions of the films! And i just discovered your channel 3 days ago and subscribed to see more amazing stuff, keep up the great work!

    I actually just recorded that episode earlier this evening, along with an "intermission" episode that will be released first. I'll be uploading that episode tonight, since it is exporting right now. I'll then start editing the Blu-Ray episode for release later this weekend when I get time.

    i love the artwork on these releases. The Box on the Original Trilogy Set shows Luke vs Vader from Episode V. I like how instead of them using the cliché A New Hope artwork for the set, they used The Empire Strikes Back as the artwork.

    Hello to everyone, I'm a fan form Germany with Hungarian roots. I think, just in England and the USA they made this 2008 set with slimcases and Bonus DVDs. In Germany and Hungary they came in normal cases and so they had a bigger paper sleeve. In Hungary the prequel trilogy came with the Bonus Discs, the original Trilogy had the Bonus Disc from 2004 but not the theateical cuts from 2006. The German sets came with no Bonus Discs at all. In Germany you just can get the Bonus Discs from the original releases back in 2001, 2002, 2004, 2005 and 2006. In Hungary the theatrical cuts from 2006 were never released. And there are Hungarian dubbed versions of all movies, the original trilogy even has 3 different dubbings, but you just can buy the Hungarian dubbing on the 2011 Blu Ray set and the 2015 DVD set and for the original trilogy it's just the newest third dub, which was fitted to the Blu Ray cuts. All earlier DVD releases in Hungary just have subtitles, no dubbing. The earlier dubbings officially are just available on VHS, on TV they also just show the third dubbing, since 1997. Ther was an original dubbing and a THX dubbing for 1995, erlier they showed the original dubbing on TV, the '95 dubbing is just available from retail VHS.

  • @AndrewChapman
    @AndrewChapman Před 7 lety +1

    I find it interesting that the 2006 Limited Edition DVDs and the 2008 DVD boxset of the original trilogy contain the theatrical versions (despite being LaserDisc transfers). But no DVD or Blu-ray releases have included the theatrical versions of the prequels at all. Each prequel already had changes made to them for their initial DVD releases and then again for the 2011 Blu-ray set, but nothing of the theatrical versions. I guess it's because the changes made to the prequels weren't as extensive as those made to the original trilogy.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 7 lety +2

      You could technically call the Blu-ray version of ROTS the theatrical version, since the only real change was to alter the cut/wipe that was changed for the initial home video release back into its original form.

    • @AndrewChapman
      @AndrewChapman Před 7 lety +1

      That's true. But there are a couple of minor changes made for the Blu-ray release which I don't think was in the theatrical version or the DVD release. Moss and rust has been added on the Kashyyyk headquarters rooftop and the Clone Troopers now have dialogue when they begin their attack on Utapau as Obi-Wan is facing General Grievous.

    Not sure yet. I have the info set aside that I need for it, but it depends on when I have the time to record. Probably this weekend, but I'm thinking that I need to add another supplemental video before it to address a couple of things, including the troll who has taken his love for a product I'm not covering in the show to the extent of stalking me online, trying to ruin my reputation, etc. A real prick. Deciding how to deal with it publicly when also prefacing the BD vid as the next one.

    Just snaged this original trilogy set for $55 at FYE yesterday. The set I got looked brand new. No scratches on the box art, or the cases, included the original paper stuck on the back of the box to tell you about the information, and the discs looked brand spanking new. Even when it said Used, it looked new. Kinda looked like, the original owner that bought the set, but never even opened it.

    You got it right. Because when I look on websites to look for the 2006 or 2008 set, more people sell the 2006 set than the 2008 set, because, just like you said, more people bought the 2006 set than the 2008 set, because they already had them and didn't want to buy a release that they already had.

    • @ChronoRadio

    @andygarand8122 Před 6 lety +1

    I just bought one of the 2008 prequel sets off ebay and I didn't like the condition of the slip box so I bought another. When I got the second set everything thing was exactly the same except for one disc. The episode 3 bonus disc had a half picture of R2-D2 & C-3PO on it and only read "The Making Of Star Wars". While the other set has Episode 3 on it with the picture of Yoda and matches all the rest of the discs styles. Although the content on both discs are the same. They are both the bonus disc for episode 3.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 6 lety

      The one labeled as "The Making of Star Wars" is probably a bootleg, likely to replace a missing disc or somesuch. There aren't any official U.S. releases that would fit that description. The 2008 prequel set's bonus disc for ROTS should look exactly like the one in the 2005 2-disc DVD releases.

    • @andygarand8122
      @andygarand8122 Před 6 lety

      I've got to be perfectly honest with you when you look at this disc it doesn't come across as a bootleg at all. It doesn't have some tacked on label or anything. It has the same exact type of printing method on it that the movie disc does. Has the FBI warning on it just like the movie disc and the wording on the edge just like the movie disc. I searched ebay to see if I could find one similar as well as Google and nothing. Crazy!!!

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 6 lety

      These days, bootlegs are usually indistinguishable from professional discs if you're looking at label quality and disc type (since they dont' tend to be the old purple-bottom DVD-R discs anymore.) Feel free to send a picture of it through email. I can look further into it. The email to use would be nathan@starwarsfanworks.com. Do you have the ability to put it into an optical drive on a computer to determine the file size of the full disc. That is usually another easy way to determine bootleg status, since most modern DVDs are dual-layer and thus more than 4.7 GB in content size, while most bootlegs tend to use cheaper, single-layer DVDs that are 4.7 GB maximum. (That's one of the ways, for example, that people can confirm that the supposed 2015 DVD sets that don't officially exist are actually bootlegs.)

    • @andygarand8122
      @andygarand8122 Před 6 lety

      I don't have a DVD drive to check it but I did take some pictures that I'll email to you.I made a mistake, too. It wasn't making of Star Wars it was a Star Wars story on the artwork.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 6 lety

      Oh, then that's an easy one. That's The Story of Star Wars, which was indeed a legitimate DVD released in the U.S. in 2005. It was a bonus item (with its own DVD case) included with ROTS when purchased at Walmart in its original 2005 release. So it's not a bootleg, but it sounds like someone had the original DVD release from Walmart with that disc, plus the 2008 boxed set, lost the real Disc 2 for ROTS from the boxed set and swapped in the Walmart TSOSW disc into the set so that it still had two discs for ROTS.
      So basically you have two different products there: a 2008 boxed set that's missing the second ROTS disc, plus The Story of Star Wars from 2005 that is missing its case.

  • @Knightmessenger
    @Knightmessenger Před 8 lety +1

    I feel like these sets were poorly marketed. They go for a lot now but for the time were a very affordable way to get all the prequels and all their dvd bonus features. The ot set was a very cheap way to get all the unaltered versions in one set, the only time the original versions were sold in box set.
    Also, note the dvd cover art does not have a barcode on the back like the individual dvd sets do. (The artwork is otherwise the same.)
    Really, these were one of the best ways to buy either trilogy, especially if somebody hadn't bought the previous sets.

      I had never owned the 2006 or 2008 set of the Original Trilogy, but I did own the prequels. I had bought the Full Screen Version of Empire Strikes Back in 2018 at $10 USED at Game X Change and a Widescreen Version of A New Hope for $13 USED in 2020. In 2021 I bought this set, the 2008 set, I was in FYE one day and flipping through the USED and Brand New Star Wars releases, just looking for Return of The Jedi the 2006 release to complete the set, but found the 2008 Original Trilogy Set for $55 USED and bought it so I had Return of The Jedi in that original theatrical form. I was happy owning these Versions, but months ago, I went into Game X Change I found the 2006 Widescreen Version of Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi, both at $8 for USED and bought them. All Disc's were cleaned before I bought them to look brand new.

    I understand the ones that I have found were used in FYE and Game X Change. But the releases I got were at a good price and the discs were cleaned beforeI purchased them. I mentioned this 2008 set was for $55, the individual releases I spent $13 on A New Hope, $10 on Empire, and just yesterday, Jedi for $8 for the 2006 set. Why does used releases online cost more on their secondary market than in person secondary market?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 2 lety +1

      To answer that last question: It has to do with different supply and demand depending on the marketplace itself: in-person vs. online. In general, it's mostly about the demand side in this case. More potential buyers can be found online than in person, so whereas if an item is priced "too high" for some buyers' tastes online, there will likely be other buyers willing to pay that higher price, in person, if you miss out on a possible buyer due to price, that may be the only person who cares about that product that your secondhand business will encounter for months at a time. The in person price must be set lower to make it more likely to actually sell to one of those very few buyers (compared to online) who might come in and find the item.

    Does the Prequel set include unaltered versions of the original theatrical movies? Puppet Yoda Episode 1, ect?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 6 lety

      Sort of. They are the same as the original DVD releases in 2001, 2002, and 2005, so while they don't have the changes made for the 2011 Blu-rays, there are some minor tweaks from the theatrical versions of TPM and AOTC, and the one change of ROTS from theatrical to DVD (a single wipe vs. a regular cut at one point) is still there.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 5 lety

      Yup, assuming we're talking legitimate copies online, it all tends to come down to demand. Online, you'll have more potential buyers, so greater demand leads to higher selling prices than in local, in-person purchasing opportunities where the number of likely buyers is much smaller.

    Strangely, the bonus DVD with Revenge of the Sith is labelled "The Story of Star Wars", but the disc data is still ROTS Disc 2. Is this a common manufacturing error?

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 8 měsíci

      It's uncommon for that product, but it's one of the more common errors, if that makes sense. Like if you were looking for error products for Star Wars home video, that's one of the most common ones, but if you're comparing the number out there to the total of copies of ROTS on DVD, it's a pretty small number. You'll see it with some individual copies and the boxed sets. I covered it on the show, but I don't recall when. It's in Ch. 5 of A Saga on Home Video, Vol. 1, though, if you have that.

    • @ChronoRadio
      @ChronoRadio  Před 10 lety

      First off, it's the "unaltered theatrical" versions on the 2008 set are the same discs as in the 2006 releases. If you don't care about the 2004 DVD version of the film that is included, then you could get the same discs more cheaply by getting either the widescreen OR fullscreen 2006 individual releases of the films (since no matter what the first disc has - WS or FS - the bonus disc remains the exact same).
      Quality-wise, the image quality is not nearly the clarity and boldness of the 2004 DVDs. They are mastered almost entirely from the Definitive Collection laserdiscs, which were the same source as the THX Remeastered 1995 release of the trilogy. The biggest issue is the one I discussed back in the episode about the 2006 DVDs: The "unaltered theatrical" versions of the films are LETTERBOXED, not true widescreen, so if you plan to play them on a widescreen TV, be prepared for not just the regular black areas above and below but also to both sides, as it will treat the image like a standard 16:9 TV image (the kind we call "fullscreen" usually).
      If you are collecting, the 2008 or 2006 DVD sets will get you what you want, though it's only decent quality. If you have your own 1995 VHS tapes and a working VHS player, and you only want to have a copy to watch that won't degrade over time on VHS, you might just spend a bit less and get a VHS-to-DVD program and adapter at Target or elsewhere and just digitize your own VHS tapes to watch off your computer or as a self-created DVD-R.
