The way we were all hoping that he did not mean it in thát way, but we all felt it coming, so so gross. And tbh I couldn't even be happy for Ellie, as soon as she started hacking away I was like oh no babygirl I'm so sorry.

He was indeed trying to make Ellie his child bride/rape victim. A lot of the time when she was in the cage, and you were asking, "why is he saying that," it was grooming techniques. Share secrets, make the victim feel like an elite/special person, try to desensitize to hinted sexual contact and speech to slowly make them blind to it eventually, etc. There are therapist reactions to the show that go through it in detail.
He definitely abused Hannah based on how she reacted to him.
