  • Replace 6 capacitors to fix a dead display on this old Bose stereo. This stereo has horrible industrial design. It's swoopy and pretty on the outside but expensive to build and difficult to repair.

Thank you. It’s always good to see how long things take. Also thanks for the input removal trick. Most people were breaking it.

When I was fixing the display on one of these I considered taking the cd player portion out since it takes up so much room and weight and its not required to operate the speakers. Cut the whole thing down to 1/3 the size, just for fun! Then I chickened out and put it back together for now.

That would be a cool hack, but there is always the risk that something will go wrong and you brick the thing. Thanks for the comment.

Funny how people repairing things nowadays with little to zero knowledge about electronics. C27 and C24 are put in series with common plus just to make from two polarized capacitors a single non polarized capacitor. If you want to fix this board replace both capacitors with same value, increased value is better ( eg 2x 100uF + 2x 100uF).

Huh, I guess I did not pick much up in 40 years as an electrical engineer.

Tremendously helpful, sir! Thank you. This provided the knowledge (not to mention, courage) to pursue this relatively easy repair, assuming one is properly equipped to desolder capacitors - easy compared to the modern SMD chips. And the tip you reminded me, I'd otherwise forgotten, touch a fresh cap across a bad (if failed open, of course) and see if that helped. I could walk through the 100 uF caps and found only two bad. I also did your trick for C27, making it 300 uF. But I think I could have just put a 470 in there for that effect, right? But I stopped when it seemed bright enough, not dazzling, but plenty bright to read through the smoked cover. Oh, just a comment, when I was more active on desoldering, I found (Ebay, I'm sure) for about $100, a Pace unit, with the integral vacuum in the soldering pen, which are then hollow tips. Worked beautifully, as you center and surround the lead into the hollowed tip, and heat up is even, and then you touch the vacuum button, and whoosh, most of the solder is gone. Then, at worst, a bit more heat and a wiggle and the component falls right out. It's so worth it if you can find one, it's a Pace model 'MP1' part: 7008-0148. And even supports 12VDC as well as 120VAC, I guess if you're soldering out in the ol' car. Anyhow, your help was invaluable.

Yes, those Pace irons with built-in vacuum work great, I miss having them at work, but I don't miss working for big corporations.

Hi, I have a lifestyle 5 model 614810, everything works perfectly, but little by little did you lose the tuning of the radio? Will I have to adjust something inside? Or could it be that I have to replace a chip, I only have a small cable for the antenna, but before that it was heard without problem, now nothing is heard, only the noise as if they were not broadcasting on radio stations.

It might be the tuning inductors have drifted, but I don't know how to do that., I am pretty sure you need an oscilloscope, and maybe a spectrum analyzer to tweak the tuner. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

    Hi, plese tell me what condensator changes , numbers ?. C27 change and replace 3x 100uF ( 50 V)?

Sorry, I did this years ago, and if it is not mentioned in the video, I would not know what capacitors to change by memory. In general, replace all the electrolytic capacitors I did, and if holding an extra one on C27 makes it brighter, than do that, like I did, ending up with three instead of one. There are other videos that talk about this exact fix, and maybe they will make clearer what capacitors to change.

Man, no idea, sorry. I would look for a diagram on the internet and try hooking it up like that. I fixed this one for a friend, but don't have access to the speakers, he lives 2000 miles away.

Sorry, that is like saying "I replaced the starter, what else could be wrong with my car?" The capacitors are the most common, but there could be many other issues that cause a dead display. Sometimes you might have to just buy a used one on eBay, sorry.
