The best option within the realms of reasonable possibilities is if the ANC gets around 45% and forms a coalition with the IFP.
Much higher than that and it's business as usual with a few crumbs thrown to a couple of 1 or 2% parties.
If they go too low , the probability of an EFF coalition becomes high which won't be good for SA.
If they form a coalition with the IFP , then what happens in KZN and Gauteng becomes interesting.
Provincially , the ANC would have to form a coalition with the IFP in KZN (because of their National coalition) , but polling data indicates that they'll need a 3rd partner.
The EFF might have enough votes to help them across the line but it looks more likely that the ANC will have to choose between the MK and DA. The DA has worked with the IFP previously so with a little nudging from the IFP , the DA could become the ANC choice for No. 3 partner.
Now if the DA is in a coalition with the ANC in KZN , they would want a coalition with the ANC in Gauteng.
Lesufi would resist as he's already in bed with the EFF and it would have a knock on effect with the metros coalition governments.
I foresee some very frantic and heated coalition negotiations coming up.
