      Yeah I watched that too. I understand Gavin's regret, but there is already a precendent to that "bypassing commander tax" with Derevi's ability (which is even easier to do so than Yuriko's commander ninjutsu).
      Nevertheless, I think Yuriko's design (commander ninjutsu and its other ability) is already superb as it requires deck building restrictions to optimize its ability.
      But for duel commander (1v1), it is just inch closer to be banned (as Derevi is banned in duel commander) once further good high CMC cards that could be easily and effectively utilized by Yuriko decks proliferate the MTG card pool.

    My biggest "what I wish I could change" would be adding colors to format staples. I don't fundamentally have issues with Teferi's protection; there should be powerful cards. I think it'd be a perfect Azorious card. Heroic intervention, perfect Selesnya card. Smothering Tithe, Orzohv, or what Daina said and put more color pips. In general, I'd have the color weight of all cards be higher. By and large, I'd try to make super staples less staply by limiting the decks they're allowed in so they're seen less often.

    • @danielsniff6405
      @danielsniff6405 Před rokem +10

      I really like that idea in concept, but I think the biggest problem with this idea is that it basically completely obliterates mono-colored decks and boosts the power of 5 color decks even farther. After all, the only color combo that actually benefits from this change is 5 color, since all of the other combos are losing staples.

    That point about splashable spells, I really resonated with that one. This is what I would call elegant design - A small change, which doesn't really negatively impact the decks those cards were intended for but stops their overuse outside of those contexts.
    Though, with the amount of treasure we have knocking about these days, I don't think that it would make as big a difference as one would wish. What we really need going forward is more treasure hate. There's a handful of cards that shut treasures down, but since they remain on the field it's pretty much a given that if you drop one of those hate cards it'll just get sniped by the player who wants access to his elventy treasures.

    Changing the casting cost of Dockside can really knock it down. Make it so it doesn't really come up that mana positive. There have been times I've cast it and only got 3 or 4 treasures. So if it cost 2RR or RRR you're going to see less abuse. Also making it more mana restrictive so it can't be played in every deck that runs red. On the subject of Crash Through: the fact that it's a red cantrip that doesn't target actually gives it some extra utility. It's easier to make Red mana than Blue - Birgi and the assorted rituals are super obvious examples. But most red cantrips target which means sometimes you get two for oned when they snipe your Balmor or Veyran or whatever when you Crimson Wisps it. You 'lose' the trample sure but you aren't realistically playing the card for the trample.

    That way players cannot just put more duals to circumvent costs, they also have to lose tempo if they want to play the thing in multicolor, to the point the card is just too overcosted in 4 or 5 colors. It is also a scalable drawback, 2 colors can play it more easily than 5, and more importantly monocolor has the best version of the card.

    Dockside having an etb is what makes it a cEDH staple. If you changed it to a cast trigger not only would that make it impossible to stop the player from getting treasures as now you can't even counter it, it would lose all its combos to generate infinite treasures that cEDH wants.

    The issue isn't that dockside can be abused for infinite mana in 2 card combos, because we have more than you could ever imagine amounts of combos that do just this. This isn't the issue. The issue is artifacts are too strong and prevalent so Dockside always lands nicely on board to make enough mana for the caster to usually win a game if they have their combo pieces. If we had more common and well costed artifact hate in all colors there'd be less targets for Dockside to pop off. The only way you could make it weaker is putting a treasure cap of like 5 or something on it, or make it a 4 drop or something. It can still be abused but this way by itself is not so explosive.

    Dockside should be cast trigger, but temur sabertooth fixes that, but still it's better than ETB and Smothering tithe should say "When ever a player draws a card except for the first one they draw that turn, create a treasure". Then you needed extra hoops to jump through to make sure you got a treasure, like Howling mine, which draws everyone 2 cards a turn.

    Anything that mills half your library should say "shuffle" first so you can deal it into 2 piles to save time. Otherwise you have to count the cards twice (first to find out how many there are and a second time for the mill)
    Scrambleverse would waste much less time if instead of picking a random player each time it just shuffled all permanents and went in turn order

  • @TeaHauss

    I think at this point, there are enough legendary creatures that fuel themselves with more than two abilities, that they can design more pairs and trios comfortably (ala "partner with"). Like, having the commands that are one time effects do multiple things feels fair, but having permanents do it is kinda nutty.
    Honestly, I'd wish more card advantage commanders came with a "once per turn", tap ability, and/or an on-cast trigger, golos or chulane being primary offenders.
    ALSO the tarrasque is a godzilla reference, and was woefully underwhelming

    Generally: more pips for staples would help indeed, I have tons of decks and this would be a factor in 5-color decks when it comes to let's say Smothering Tithe, if it would have 3 white pips I wouldn't include it in some decks that have them yet. Also regarding Dockside, red is most of the time a color which is the least present in multicolor decks, so giving him like 2 pips would make a difference indeed I'd say.
    The freecast cycle from Ikoria:
    Make it cost 1 mana and only castable when you have a commander out would fix it, in that case you could even give it cycling in case it is dead I think and it would fit since Ikoria has the cycling mechanic.
    Dockside Extortionist:
    Additionally to tapped treasures, target opponent instead of each, making more answers (like giving a player hexproof) valid against Dockside as well as tame him down. If that's still too powerful you could choose artifact or enchantment when it enters and generate the treasures just regarding one of the types, not both, but I think those 2 changes would be enough.
    And yes, Dockside was always a problem, it was from the very beginning a pushed stupid card and people slept on it and I frankly don't know why it took my 25 copies to skyrocket in price as I purchased them for a price which most people wish they could buy him now. I just didn't stockpiled more of them because I was afraid of reprints and was naive enough to think they would be so nice to reprint him in Commander Legends. Silly me, the greed assessment was off..
    Great challenge regarding Spoils of Evil in mill-decks, I have included it some time ago since I also believe it is very good in that type of decks and it has not let me down yet.
    Alms Collector and Song of the Worldsoul are not as bad as you think I'd say, they are just way more niche. Alms Collector for example is a balanced wheel card and Song of the Worldsoul should just be played if you have some ridiculous tokens like the 10/10 Eldrazi ones or Godsire tokens etc.
    However, Cartographer's Hawk, Tempt with Glory and the Seraphic Greatsword are indeed mindboggingly bad

And honestly the names are one of my biggest concerns. People speak of cards like "Dockside Extortionist" with passion, positive or negative, while cards like "Fireball" don't spark any excitement at all anymore. Often I wish they could have more than one card with the same name outside silver-bordered sets. Tap and Exile Dockside Extortionist: Make the treasures.

      @Doombot2point0 Před rokem

      Not a bad idea and while your point about the sorcery is valid to some extent, don't forget the set it was designed for had a pirate creatures theme etc so it made sense to throw this on a relevant creature body. I definitely think this should've been something similar to what you wrote because having to wait a whole turn and then tap and exile is a fairly hefty cost for a power effect. It gives the table a turn to get rid of it etc. plus you can't just blink it etc. Easy way to fix it for sure.

    31:50 I disagree heavily. Ive played a bunch of Atraxa Sagas and resourceful defense is aweful for it. Yes you get to keep counters, yes you get to trigger the last ability but where Sagas shine is NOT when you push them to get their last chapter fast but when they stick around longer than what they were intended for. You want to be DECREASING your lore counters on cards because usually your command zone with satsuki and atraxa takes care of getting more chapter abilities. The rest of the deck should focus on getting rid of Lore counters so you get to trigger your sagas over and over until you win. Overall resourceful defense is a waste of mana in any Saga deck because it goes against what you wanna be doing.
