1. Paul Newman
2. Michael Caine
3. Clint Eastwood
4. Gregory Peck
1. Paul Newman
2. Peter O' Toole
3. Clint Eastwood
4. Peter Sellers
5. Sean Connery
Paul Newman and Robert Redford, now that's a bromance
Seeing Gregory Peck at #1 just made my day !!
Gregory Peck really deserved first place, well done with this list.
70s: Jack Nicholson
80s: Robert DeNiro
90s: Tom Hanks
00s: Daniel Day Lewis
60s: Eastwood
10. Walter Matthau
9. Alan Arkin
8. Warren Beatty
7. Marcello Mastroianni
6. George C. Scott
5. Richard Burton
4. Sidney Poitier
3. Peter Sellers
2. Jack Lemmon
1. Paul Newman
Finally, someone showing some love to Gregory Peck. He is my favourite actor of all time. Before this video I´ve watched the Mojo Top 10 video of actors in the 50s. I was shocked that he wasn't included. Now I get it. He became famous in the 50s (Roman holiday, The Big Country, Bravados) but excelled as an actor in the 60s (How to kill a Mockingbird, Cape Fear). What a legend!
Gregory Peck's 60s career was big for only TWO YEARS and they were right at the beginning. Paul Newman had big movies throughout the ENTIRE 60s from 1961 right through 1969. If you wanna do decade defining ROLES then Atticus Finch wins. But this should be about work during the entire decade.
Watch the beginning of the video, thats how they came up with the #1 actor
Quinn C However, Peck's role in To Kill A Mockingbird represented the civil rights movement, as a major aspect of the 60s, it allows him to be considered an important actor of that decade.
But there's the problem with that train of thought. You can't give it to a guy based on only one role. You're absolutely right about the civil rights and Atticus Finch. But it has to be about the entire decade, not just one role.
Ricky Delgado Peck's performance as Atticus Finch is considered one of the greatest ever put on film.
Alex Meyer So is Jack Nicholson's in Cuckoo's Nest. And Henry Fonda in 12 Angry Men. Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. But it's not about one role. That's what I believe at least.
Jack Lemmon deserved to be on the list. He is easily one of the greatest actors of all time.
Gregory Peck deserved the number 1 spot. The most talented actor ever. He also acted in a wide variety of films.
God I love watching Sidney Poitier movies. He's always turned in great performances and never been in a bad movie. Watch him in 1965's "The Bedford Incident", not even mentioned here.
No question of the greatness and legacy of all the actors here, However, I do think Newman should have been placed higher than Peck. True Peck's role in To Kill A Mockingbird is considered one of the best performances ever and won him an Oscar, but The Hustler, Hud, Cool Hand Luke, and Butch Cassidy are all classics!
I was disappointed Dick Van Dyke wasn't even mentioned once on this list. 1960s for him were gold. Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Bye Bye Birdie. Not to mention he even got his own show for half the decade.
1. Newman 2. Lemmon 3. Sellers 4. Poitier 5. Mastroanni 6. Arkin
Clint Eastwood number 5?? Nope nope nope nope.
I think Newman had a way better legacy than Gregory Peck.
Ryan Krul Totally agree with you Ryan, he should have been #1, McQueen #2 and Peck #3.
***** OF THE 60'S!!! Not 90's or 2000's
***** Well Paul Newman died 6 years ago, and Michael Caine is still active.
Ryan Krul Yes, that is true. But we're talking about the 1960's. Paul Newman was alive all through the 1960's.Totally irrelevant what has happened before or after the 1960's in this survey.
Wow Christopher Lee . The guy was ative in 1950'es, 60'es to the present . Dont forget he just reprised his role as Saruman in the hobbit franchsise . He just turned 92 and has no plans for retirement . He Got my deepest respect
Gregory peck as #1...perfect. He was a fantastic actor.
Sean connery should be higher up
Quinn C Yeah I think them along Micheal Caine and Steve McQueen owned the 60s!
Hard to beat the impact of To Kill a Mockingbird
Caine, Connery, Eastwood and McQueen should be higher imo.
Not knocking Gregory Peck cos he's an amazing actor in Cape Fear too, but Connery and McQueen and Eastwood should be higher
Gregory Peck, he was so handsome!
maeflower522 Oh yess
Gregory Peck definitely deserves a place on the list, but he probably should have been at 5 or 6. Paul Newman should be at the top.
Now these are the gentlemen I could learn a lot from.
6 Sean Connery played in six dimonds are forever
Normally I can see why some people are left off but my big question is where is Jerry Lewis on this list? The Nutty Professor, Cinderfella, The Ladies Man, The Bellboy, The Errand Boy, The Patsy. He was one of the top comedians of this decade that we still remember.
What?! Jack lemmon only an honorable mention? And gregory peck number 1?! Peter o'toole or paul newman should be number 1
Interesting fact: Steve McQueen was in the United States Marine Corps
and Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner deserve an honorable mention at the least
They are primarily known for TV acting, this series seems to concentrate on cinema only.
Segalmed they really shouldnt limit to just movies. and if so, they should specify to what form of acting, movies or tv shows
Fuck William Shatner
TheTurtlemans go mail a bear
Mouthofthe$outh It may be difficult to fit a bear in a mail box.
To Kill a Mockingbird movie was great during Literature class.
Steve Mcqueen #1 Unlike Gregory Peck people are still talking about him today and he is continuing to find new fans everyday. When picking a list of decade defining actors maybe you should pick persons that people actual reference when discussing pop-culture from that decade. (just a thought)
Clint Eastwood #2 Made his real mark in the 60s and continues to impress us today. He practically defines the 20TH Century. Directing and portraying characters that have relevance to not only the times but the opinions and controversies of the times.
John Wayne #3 Still a big box office draw through the 60s. Should be at least mentioned in every list from the 40s through the 70s. Influenced what American Audiences expected from an action adventure hero.
While there are many great legends of the 60s, an indepth analysis of box office success, classic films made, and cultural significance leads you to Paul Newman, unquestionably.
Very nice list! I would've probably put Paul Newman at the top and Steven McQueen at two.
1970's actors are going to be Al pacino, gene hackman, jack nicholson, dustin hoffman etc
Thanks a lot for doing this such a great work and list :)!
No Dustin Hoffman? A man who played the leading role in the graduate and midnight cowboy, 2 movies that always come up, when people talk about the new Hollywood of the 60s?
Also, Eastwood and Connery higher.
I agree....I was thinking of Dustin Hoffman too. And they didn't even give him an honorable mention.
He'll be on the 80's list.
70s or 80s list and likely the all-time list
toastedcheeser
I don't think so. Despite a few memorable roles in the 80s and 90s as well, I think the 60s and 70s was when Hoffman really made his chops and his characters. The same could be said about DeNiro and Eastwood. You could almost put them on every decade list from the 60s and onward
While Hoffman did leave an impression in the late 60s with The Graduate and Midnight Cowboy, it was the 70s in which he truly expanded himself and became a bona fide movie star.
Can watchmojo do decade defining filmmakers next?
I know someone has probably asked this, but are you guys going to do a Actresses series as well?
Most likely unless they want a mob of feminists flooding the comment sections.
Gregory Peck was such an amazing actor. Very handsome and eloquent. I loved him as Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird". He definitely deserves the top spot!
Jack Nicholson better be Number 1 on the 70's list...
or maybe Robert De Niro or Al Pacino
him or pacino
Yah Deniro
But he could also be on the 80's or 90's decade. So hard to choose.
Frijolero18 He got the most Oscar nominations in the 70's and had his career defining performance in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
Now this is a much better list, especially since you included Warren Beatty and Michael Caine, two of my favorites! I wish Jack Lemmon made the final cut, but at least he was mentioned. Too bad Omar Sharif or Tony Perkins missed being mentioned.
Peter O'Toole should have been much higher.
Wrong. That queen isn't an iconic figure like Newman , McQueen , and Eastwood
My opinion is my opinion. O'Toole is who I, personally, think of first when I think of 60's actors.
colderbeer dude had 8 academy nominations, the most in history. That and LoA is considered one of the best movies of all time. He should be higher on the list but the actors here are amazing so it would be hard to rank them. I personally think #1 and #2 are interchangeable on this list.
He also should have won more than an honorary Oscar. Frickin Academy.
pr0jectSkyneT
Jack Nicholson still tops him I believe with 12 oscar nominations (also 8 of them for best actor in leading rol). They better put Jack on nr.1 in tomorrow's 1970's list or it will be a joke. O'Toole was great though, so a higher spot would have been deserved.
Gregory Peck deserves the #1 spot!
Peter O Toole was too low but I have to say this was the greatest series of videos Watchmojo ever did
Top ten of the 70's my prediction: Robert De Niro 1 Al Pacino2 Jack Nicholson3 Dustin Hoffman 4 Robert Redford 5 Woody Allen 6 Gene Hackman 7 Martin Sheen 8 Jon Voight 9 Peter Fonda or Christopher Walken10
Gregory Peck is awesome!!
The 80's (Harrison Ford) and the 90's (Tom Hanks) will be easy, but today's 70's list will be very interesting.
Anthony Perkins from Psycho could have gotten an honorable mention
this list is awesome! Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood are the best!!
Peck's Cape Fear Co Star Robert Mitchum should've been an honorable mention.
Couldn't agree more with #1. One of the greatest of all time. The rest are ok. Probably would have put Sammy Davis, Anthony Perkins or Dean Martin as a mention though. And switched Eastwood and Sidney's positions.
So this is what it's like to be here early.
How does it feel?
Great.
Less moronic comments?
Frijolero18 Just people who say they're early, so yes.
Gregory Peck definitely deserved number 1. That's no ideal to me. That is a living, working reality!
90s Anthony Hopkins, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Kevin Spacey, Gary oldman, John Malkovich, Johnny Depp, Ralph Fiennes
At 9.18 that's Mr. Hand! Aloha Mr. Hand!
Yeah. Michael Caine was awesome back in the original Italian Job. The one that actually did take place in Italy. And of course Sean Connery as the Bond that started it all. Awesome list!
Vincent Price should be on this list for sure. He was in some of the scariest movies of all time.
Clint is a tough one. He would have had a strong top 10 place in the 70's as well. My favorite actor. But I personally think the dirty harry movies were more profound and made more of an impact than the Leone westerns
"This is a 44 magnum the most powerful handgun in the world and would blow your head clean off. You got to ask yourself one question, do I feel lucky? Well do ya, punk.?". Legandary
Steve McQueen was the man that helped make the car chase a thing. :)
Love all those actors. Well done Mojo!
"The names Bond. James Bond. License to sleep with whoever the fuck I want."
You nailed this one guys!
Can't wait for the next part. =D
Watchmojo, would decade defining inventions be a good idea?
So do they have a seperate list for top ten TV actors of 1960's with Bob Keeshan, Hugh Brannum, etc. on Captain Kangaroo 5 days a week 1955-1984. As the World turns had two long running actors Don Maclaughin 1956-86 and Don Hastings 1960-2010. Johnny Carson on the Tonight show 5 nights a week from Oct. 1962 - May 22, 1992 Was also on To Tell the truth during day time guest starting in 1960 full time 61-62 (Couldn't do Tonight show until that contract ran out). Also on show Who do you trust also on daytime 1957- 63. James Arness, Milburn Stone, etc. on Gunsmoke 1955-75. Lorne Greene, Dan Blocker, Michael Landon on Bonanza 1959-73. James Drury, Doug Mcclure, Lee J. Cobb, etc. on the The Virginian 1962-71. first hour and one half western series counting commericials (75 minutes not counting commercial). 3rd longest running western series after Gunsmoke and Bonanza. Bill Cosby on both I Spy and The Bill Cosby show. Reruns of earlier movies were popular so Johnny Weismueller with Reruns of Tarzan, and Jungle Jim from the 1930's-50's still on TV in the 1960's and brought about new Tarzan series starring Ron Ely in 1968.Reruns of 3 stooges also popular then. Reruns of Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movies and also Dean Martin's movies without Jerry Lewis were also popular which brought about the Dean Martin Show in the 1960's.
It's a shame Fleming turned that role down. He was an amazing actor, and his life was cut too short.
Hey WatchMojo, Connery's been in SEVEN Bond films - you guys left out Diamonds are Forever and Never Say Never Again (which wasn't EON, but still) :P
You made a mistake. Terence Young the director of Dr. No took Connery under his wing teaching him how to talk, walk, eat, talking to women, acting with style, taking him to clubs, how to be suave. Terence Young adapted the book to the big screen and teaching Connery how to be Bond.
Don't miss the rest of the videos in this series,

Top decade defining directors of all time
+Creepy Closet yes:)
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!! Youre kidding me, Lemmon is just an honorble mention. Give your credebility back please.
That's so right
I wouldve switched 1 and 2. Everything else is perfect
2000s Daniel Day Lewis, Sean Penn, Ian McKellan, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jeff Bridges
Yes! Eastwood and Peck are the list are on the list! :-)
Jack Lemmon as only an honorable mention in the 60s?? Man, I don't know watchmojo, I think you crapped the bed on that one.....he is a sure fire pick over Warren Beatty and Michael Caine in the very least (Talking 60s of course).
Sean Connery, IMO, is the defining actor of the 1960s via "James Bond."
Love this video
This is the best actors of the 60's :
1) Paul Newman
2) Clint Eastwood
3) Sidney Poiter
4) Steve Mcqueen
5) Peter O'Toole
6) Sean Connery
7) Peter Sellers
8) Michael Caine
9) Warren Beatty
10) Jack Lemmon
Menciones Honorables :
* Burt Lancaster
* Cristopher Lee
* Marcello Mastroani
* Dick Van Dyke
* Richard Burton
* George C. Scott
2010s: Leonardo DiCaprio, Christian Bale, Colin Firth
I love the last part, "You're only suppose to blow the bloody doors off!" I love Michael Caine lol
Correction Sean Connery was in 7 James Bond: Dr No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Thunderball, Diamonds are Forever, You only live twice and Never say never
Marcello Mastroianni should be in this list....
Is the man in almost all the Fellini's movie of the 60s
Peter O'Toole should have been higher, and George C. Scott should have been far higher. O'Toole as T. E. Lawrence and Scott as Patton are two of the most iconic roles ever. And Clint Eastwood should have been saved for the 70s for Dirty Harry.
Peter O'Toole should have been number 1, the best actor never to win an Oscar.
Clint Eastwood..Only 5 ??
You did not make my day..=))
YELLOW BELLY!!!!!!
You guys should do top ten nightmare on elm street deaths
would love to see that video. "Top _ _ _ deaths" would be a much better series than this boring decade stuff
The guy above me is an edgy teen edgelord.
Why not Alain Delon or Jean Paul Belmondo or de Funes?
YES! Gregory Peck!!
I thought Newman would be number 1 and McQueen numbe 2, but when I saw them came out earlier, I knew Peck would be number 1. TKAM was just so iconic and historic, its too hard to top it even if its just 1 movie.
John Huston as an honorable mention, I never really thought of him as an actor as much as a director. Well I sure hope you guys make a decade defining directors list to include him on.
Also, you could put Michael Caine in for the 2000s for his roles in Nolan's movies, as I think that more defines him and the decade than his roles in the 60s.
70s : number 1: Robert DeNiro, 2:Jack Nicholson,3: Al Pacino, 4:Dustin Hoffman, gene hackman, Robert DuVall, Jon Voight
interesting pick for #1 but i like it
The original Cape Fear is my favorite.
Peter Seller was amazing in The Pink Panther, very funny movies they are
You guys make such great lists, but it bothers me how you seem to always get the Top 5 rankings wrong.
The great Paul Newman should have been an obvious choice at number 1. Both Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen are iconic figures and they should be higher up the list. They have way more global appeal and star value than Poitier.
And lastly, Sean Connery was the breakout international star of the 60's. Along with being the most defining James Bond, his swagger alone should have garnered him the number 2 spot at least.
1. Sean Connery
2. Paul Newman
3. Julie Andrews
4. Steve McQueen
5. Clint Eastwood
6. Peter O' Toole
7. John Wayne
8. Charlton Heston
9. Peter Sellers
10. Sidney Poiter
I saw this on another video but I think it would be cool to do like a decade defining deaths. Like princess diana's im the 90's etc.
They need to do a video to explain this series!? Is this best actors of the decade or best to define it?
You're only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!
Christopher Lee should be number 1, he's the greatest British actor that ever lived (Dracula, Lord of the Rings, the original Wicker Man etc)
Should've added Harry Belafonte, Janet Dubois, Cecily Tyson, Sammy Davis Jr, Calvin Lockheart, Rosalind Cash. Etc. We made/make movies too. This was an Era that started the "myth" that black people are more than servants and slaves. We became Stars. Elegant, Regal, Graceful, beings portraying roles that impacted. Not so much now in my opinion but back then we captured magic and in the 70s we felt now that we've done roles that we were obligated to do we now have creativity. The 60s we felt responsible to show the world who we are. I respect Harry Belafonte so much he Only chose roles he felt were fit to the standard that he set. I wish you all could've added some of our contributions. Maybe in the future.
Gregory Peck... Yes!!!
I adore Gregory Peck and Peter o'Toole
I would have though that Dustin Hoffman would have made it on her for The Graudate and Midnight Cowboy, but I guess he'll probably be on the 70s list then.
I thought Kirk Douglas or Charlton Heston would be the last two defined actors of the 60's
They are on the 50s list.
I wouldn't call him decade defining but I like some Terence Stamp movies
