  • Between 1779 and 1782, Spain pressed the British in such disparate places as Gibraltar, the Caribbean, and Central America, and even threatened to invade Britain’s home islands, thus tying up dozens of British warships and numerous regiments of British regulars. Luckily for the United States, two key regions important to America became Spanish priorities as well - British held Florida and the Mississippi River Valley. Almost singlehandedly, the Spanish removed the British from West Florida, which forced England to also relinquish East Florida as part of the terms to end the war.
Tom Hand, creator and publisher of Americana Corner, explores how Spain was a great helpmate during our fight against England, and a real difference maker in the American Revolution, and why it still matters today.

Extremely interesting into the "backstory" of how our young nation 's fate was impacted by international activities by Spain.
    Great vignette!

Can't appreciate enough what Spain did for us in the American Revolution! Spain is often criticized for her help in that it was for self interests only. So what? Reasons matter little lol! Spain didn't need us! We needed Spain! Historian Larrie Ferreiro said that Spain and also France fought in the American Revolution for self interests only and that there's nothing negative about that! It's okay to do that! Sad that Spain is criticized while France gets a pass. People also forget the American Revolution was a world global war and not just within the 13 Colonies!
Over 100,000 Spanish soldiers and sailors fought against the British helping the United States win it's independence!
About 17,500 Spanish soldiers fought in the Southern theater in Florida and the Caribbean protecting French possessions allowing Degrasse to travel to both the Chesapeake and later Yorktown which Spain also had a huge role in the military planning! Spanish General Bernardo de Gálvez was kind and generous enough to release his own French troops under Spanish command and ALLOWED Degrasse to take them to go reinforce Rochambeau at Yorktown! Sadly, none of this is taught in American schools!
