i agree that there is a a difference between appropriation and appreciation, but the issue with non-black people wearing dreads, cornrows, etc. is that they wear it to give a certain type of vibe or have certain type of look. When black people wear these hairstyles, it’s literally just our hair (no vibe to give off just living) and we have consistently been looked down on, whether it is being seen as unprofessional or uneducated, for having the hairstyles that natural for our hair and have a history and culture tied to it. Also, these hairstyles just aren’t good for non-black hair, so why even have it in your head lol.
I fully agree with you! Cultural appropriation became a subject of conversation because the Kardashians adopted it and tried to brand it as a trend they started and tried to capitalize on it.
The issue is that black people, mostly women, are not allowed to even wear these protective styles at school or work & some states have to pass laws to protect them from getting suspended or fired.
Personally, I find it endearing when people wear braids or any Afrocentric styles, even when it's just a concept or fashion phase. Sometimes I see Korean or Chinese traditional wear, and I'm like, "That's cute; I would like to try that." It doesn't make me a threat to those cultures. Its just appreciating their craft and ideas.
It's only entities and brand names like the Kardashians, Louis Vuitton, Fendi, etc, that capitalize on black and Afrocentric cultures and take ownership of it. While we are labeled as savages and unprofessional when we practice it as our own culture.

The last part about cultural appropriation... you guys almost got it with the concept of cultural appreciation, however, at the end of the day, its not up to YOU guys as asians to talk for what is or is not RIGHT to do in terms of black culture (or any other culture that isn't yours). black people in consensus get to decide what they think is okay when it comes to their culture, as with asians getting to decide what is okay to take from their culture. I saw your comment but I wanted to watch the entire episode before forming an opinion. Let me just preface this by saying I am black, I usually don't go out of my way to watch content creators out of my race because it can be difficult and disappointing when they say certain things. I've been a fan of people then it came out that they said the N word and it just leaves a real sour taste in my mouth but I don't really get that from this podcast. I agree with you that a person who isn't black can't decide what is or isn't cultural appropriation but I also agree with Wootak that "cultural appropriation" is when someone does something outside their culture then claims that they own it or they created it. Kim Kardashian has done it numerous times. She braided her hair in a certain style then claimed that a white woman coined that style. Which was very silly. If you like or enjoy something outside your culture that is fine. A lot of people even welcome it because they are just happy that another group of people find joy in a culture outside of their own.
