    My Zimmerman rotors lasted about 43k miles on the front. Just changed my pads from hella/pagid which worked great to ate. I feel my rotors in front are just now warping and need to be changed. I'm a bit hard on my brakes and love the stopping power. I'm surprised how long they lasted. Just ordered the Zimmerman sport drilled from fcp. Price was the best.
    I have a 2013 a7 3.0 356mm rotors.
    Hope this helps

  • @SuperSpetterpoep

    The drilled ones is not to let heat escape, but the gas created by braking between pad & rotor. This will make you able to push a little harder compared to non-drilled rotors.

    Two questions:
    What is the advantage of slotted rotors?
    If using ceramic pads, are drilled or drilled and slotted rotors any better, or a waste of money.

    • @fcpeuro
      @fcpeuro  Před 6 lety

      Holes or slots help air ventilation and expel heat, the rotors will run cooler and cool off faster. The slots will also help to scrub the pad surface. You'll notice slightly better braking performance in daily driving. It will be more noticeable during track driving.

    OK after two M vehicles 3 and a 4 comp as well as a f10 M.
    drilled and slotted styles each have their own application just as a BBK or big brake kit are more for style on the street unless making considerable high speed runs followed by aggressive cornering as the bigger pots larger rotors larger pads allows for more force to be applied that couples with material of the pad and rotor work in conjunction to stop shorter while reducing heat before the next cycle/ brakes applied again. Now with that said and the cars I've owned all had modest modifications for hp and suspension upgrades but all were spiritedly street driven never tracked.
    I say this, the M3 coupe had the most fade from 140+ down to 60mph on OE rotors and akebono ceramics.
    The M4 and the 5er both have substantially larger brake components from factory and both are capable of 160+ mph like the M3 so after some runs the stock comp setup on the M4 is proper but still has the same characteristics as my M3 heat them up and here comes the fade but again were talking crazy illegal speeds on all US roads and very few world wide unless your tracking the vehicle or well being slightly reckless continously every day drilled is not necessary,
    slotted, more for dirtier climates were keeping a clean surface on both pad and rotor are ideal and also has some very slight cooling but most cooling of a rotor stems from venting or plain radiant release of more surface area in the groove cut,
    true superior performance stems from Materials used in both pad and rotor as well as force applied (caliper design) all working together to remove heat while still applying force to arrest momentum.
    if you really want to be the brake king grab yourself a BBK carbon ceramic setup 👌

  • @rondhole
    @rondhole Před 3 lety +2

    in most cases, drilled and slotted rotors are less durable than plain rotor. The holes are the failure points of crack. Not a good idea for people who want to have a comfort ride.

  • @AMetalWorks
    @AMetalWorks Před 11 lety +4

    I thought the holes were for out gassing?

  • @_J.P._
    @_J.P._ Před 7 lety +4

    It might be a good add on to tell about the drilled ones that it is beneficial to clean the holes once a year at least :) or else you build up crap from braking wich will clog up the holes.
    Also with Zimmerman brake rotors you need special brake pads. Not special in a way "you can't buy them anywhere except one place" but special meaning that when you change your brake rotors for Zimmerman rotors you may have to change your brake pads as well as they may not get along well and instead of gaining brake power you may actually loose some. Have a too soft composit pad and the friction will increase heat that lowers brake efficiency. Have a hard brake pad composit and you get good braking power but if it is too hard you end up with squeaky brake noises :D there is no telling in which goes best. You simply have to try out. But it helps if you find someone who can assist you throu the selection and tell you about the pads if they are soft, softer, hard or harder and sort them out. But if your local dealer has Zimmerman brake pads along with rotors in store, take it.

    Even though the coated ones are advertised as preventing rust, the rotors are not rust free. They will start rusting after the first car wash or rain. Zimmermann rotors are a great value, and better quality compared to OEM Mercedes rotors. I ordered replacements for my C63. Unfortunately these morons sent me rotors for BMW instead. Wasted 2 weeks getting the correct rotors. Zimmermann rotors work great with ceramic pads. I picked up Power Stop ceramic pads which are a fraction of the cost and do not produce gregarious amounts of brake dust; stop the car better than semi-metallic OEM pads. Nothing like turning heads pulling up to a stop light with squeaking brakes- This side of the pond noisy brakes are looked down upon. Note: I have not track tested my brake setup. On "normal" road conditions they have performed well. If driving 150mph is normal in your country.

    I love my Zimmerman Cross Drilled Rotors. I have put them on both my 1999 Audi A6 Quattro and 2000 BMW 528I Sport. Anyone who says cross drilled are for looks only is an idiot. Cross drilled allows for better cooling.
    On my 1999 Audi A6 I had 4 sets of brake front brake rotors replaced in the first 50000 miles under warranty because of warpage front heat. Unlucky enough to purchase a car which Audi realized the brakes were under sized and increased the diameter of the front rotors from 288 mm (which I Have) to 312 mm. I just replaced the rotors on my 1999 Audi as I prepped it for sale and I had 240000 miles out of my front and rear Zimmerman cross-drilled and no warpage just reached the wear limit.
    I have 60000 on my BMW 528i and no issues or warpage.
    Cross Drilled still maintains the normal feel on your brake pedal unlike cross-drilled/ slotted which vibrate the brake pedal as the pads encounter the slots. Unlike all the cross drilled rotors for sale on sites such as ebay.com where some idiot is standing at a drill press and running rotors through it to drill the wholes; Zimmerman cross drilled rotors are engineered from the beginning to be drilled in manufacturing process and won't crack unless some cataclysmic event occurs and that can happen with non cross drilled rotors as well.
    Not sure if Zimmerman has moved its manufacturing to China but I bought mine over 10 years ago and they were made in Germany. Definitely needed on modern luxury cars where the weight of the cars are over 4200lbs.

      Sean Williams unfortunately they are made in China yet “coated” in Germany. That’s how they get passed the made in China thing. We have had lots of come backs with Zimmerman the past couple of years and no longer stand behind them. However the drilled option they offer seem to hold up much better. Good to hear you had good luck with them.

    I suggest pushing the advantages of slotted rotors over so-called drilled rotors. They're more effective. People think drilled rotors are high performance. No. Not unless they're manufactured specifically, not after the fact. Post-drilled rotors develop fatigue cracks under hard use, and then break if not inspected regularly.
