"One of the signature chords of my guitar vocabulary comes from her version of 'Railroad Bill.' This was the first guitar picking style that I ever learned." Taj MahalLearn traditional fingerpicking blues from a legendary player! Etta Baker plays, sings and breaks down ten traditional and original tunes, offering a true down-home lesson in Piedmont style blues.Playing her dreadnaught acoustic and 1950's Gibson Les Paul, Etta's rock solid yet swinging fingerpicking is truly inspiring to watch. You'll see, up close, her alternating-thumb and blues picking techniques, plus left-hand chord shapes, slides, bends and the variety of rhythmic devices that add a personal touch to every song she plays.Etta performs and discusses some of the best-known songs of her repertoire: The classic fingerpicking of "Carolina Breakdown," "One Dime Blues," "Railroad Bill" and "Bully Of The Town;" the "Spanish" four-finger style of "Dew Drop;" the electric Delta blues style of her original "On The Other Hand Baby;" the rocking "Brown's Boogie;" and two songs in open-D (or "K.C.") tuning-- "Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad" and her powerful bottleneck/slide version of "John Henry."

Not only is she one of thee only/quintesential piedmont guitar players but her style really stands out amongst her contemporaries when you really watch and listen to her. Its incredibly subtle yet prominent. Stunning.
Ms. Baker, you are a beautiful gem. I love you. Sincerely....jamie
There is only one Etta Baker. I fell in love when I heard a recording of railroad bill. Just amazing.
FINALLY! A picker that you can see what she is doing and you can understand what she is saying.. Great camera work.
I discovered this beautiful lady, from listening to Blind Boy Fuller. When I started studying Fullers music I thought it was amazing that he came up with all those catchy guitar licks. Come to find out he learned alot of what he knew from his neighbors in North Carolina. Anyway they had a very distinct and unique sound. I hope Ms. Etta got paid for all her efforts and video's she made with various people before she passed. What a kind beautiful lady.
superb lesson, even those like me who don't play instruments enjoy and appreciate this.
no words left it just pure pleasure to listen
"An aged man is but a paltry thing,
A tattered coat upon a stick, unless
Soul clap its hands and sing, and louder sing"
Her soul really sings. Thanks for sharing this, she is an insipration.
Etta fingers just go up and down on the neck so gently ✌💙
Stunningly outstanding executed with such cool nuance!!!
Such a sweet lady. She has such a connection to the Carolina tradition but I hear a lot of similarities with the playing of Mississippi John Hurt on much of her work. And this piece sounds very much like classic Texas Blues in the style of Lightnin' Hopkins.
Love it, thank you...
I love Etta Baker :)
How can someone give this a thumbsdown? SheeZ get a life!
Wow! you make it look so simple when it sounds so hard to do- Thanks Etta!
da best!
they cut this off right before the best part, on the dvd he asks her to slow down again and she keeps right on playing!
