A Feeling I've Never Felt Before

  • The thing I cut out of this video is that I have a new kind of pain that I've never felt before and because it's new it's just kinda hard to deal with. I don't know what it means. I don't know how to make it feel better and I don't yet know what makes it worse. It's common to have muscle pain after radiation but I thought it would feel like other muscle pain I've had before and it just doesn't!
    So weird. Anyway, that's a bummer. Good thing I got some positive new sensations as well! Thanks for that.

    The sensation of having a baby moving around inside my abdomen and it's not me that is making that movement happen is one of the weirdest, most difficult to describe sensations I've ever experienced.
    I don't know that it's better than beard sensation, but it is a weird one.

    Oh Hank, I am turning 70, and a whole bunch of new sensations flood you as you get older. Why is my knee refusing to move? Why am I scared to step down off a curb? What do you mean I broke my leg, just because I fell off a chair? Why are my dreams getting so weird and so much more frequent? It seems to be a continuum, until our last day. Maybe the gods just want to keep us curious and interested in life? Or they want us to never forget, that no matter what happens to us we are STILL 100% ALIVE!

    I think the fact that John didn't introduce this problem the minute that action was needed had a huge impact on how many people felt encouraged and mobilised. This is not a problem that he first introduced to us a few weeks ago, but something we've been educated about for years now. We are consistently bombarded with problems that demand our attention, but rarely for more than a week at a time. I feel the pain of tuberculosis because I have been consistently reminded of its existence for years now. I know it is not something that goes away once the media storm goes somewhere else. It is not a problem solved with one donation but years of attention and work and that is what made these two campaigns so empowering. Thank you to John and thank you to this community for making me feel like I had the power to push a powerful world around me for the first time in a long time

      Yes. One of the most important things for me is that it felt less like the community was being suddenly asked to blind trust a Correct Answer and mob enforce a sudden declaration. As often happens from advocacy mobilization. But instead being introduced to a complex issues many facets and why there’s reason to think this facet could be improved in these places for these reasons. And how to do that considerately while minimizing harm.

      I am old enough to remember getting the annual four prong TB test in elementary school, and being promptly pulled out of class when I had a reaction to the test. Turns out that unlike many of my peers, my mother had been exposed as a child during the depression and had passed the antibodies on to me at birth and/or via breastfeeding. I had often wondered why TB hadn't gone the way of smallpox, and I am happy to know that you have made positive steps in that direction through your channel.❤

    I think they are finding their true calling. Promoting & organizing activism to go in deep on a single issue, providing actionable direction and in turn producing unfathomable results. It's a treat to watch & be a part of. A new sensation indeed, it feels like the people's power actualized.
    Would be incredible if they could expand upon this and use their position to form an organization of prominent figures/influencers so they could all work together to build a prioritized list of issues and knock them out one by one. Perhaps even tackling some major root issues that ripple out to many others.
    The biggest hindrance to action for the general public in my opinion is both not knowing what to do & not knowing others are behind you. You guys help solve both of those problems. Thanks Hank & John!

    • @lunacouer
      @lunacouer Před 8 měsíci +4

      This has been a great intro into activism. I think what a lot of people missed is that Partners In Health, Médecins Sans Frontières, and Doctors Without Borders have been advocating for these specific things for years. There's been years of analysis, organizing, planning and real life protests. But they happened in the countries who've been most deeply impacted - aka, poor countries that don't affect their bottom line - so these companies ignored them.
      What we were able to do only happened because we were the second string, so to speak. Once a first-world influencer got involved, with a whole lotta first-world people coming together to shine the spotlight on them, that's when they got spooked. There were real-time financial consequences, so they took immediate action on plans that were already laid out for them.
      We stood on the shoulders of giants who'd already built the road. The key was in the door - they just were waiting for the companies to take the final steps and unlock it. That's why things happened SO fast. We just reminded them of the financial consequences if they didn't turn the key.
      Having actionable things we can do is absolutely vital to unlocking these doors. Most people want to do good in this world and right injustices, but we don't know where to start. At the same time, we were the last step. So if influencers could partner with causes that have already done the work, and give us these kind of small, actionable things we can do to help them, there's a lot we could do together.

Seeing how much we can do when we're all focused on the same task together, whether that be raising money to reduce maternal and child mortality or convincing the people that make up a big organization to put people over profits, is...indescribable. And it gives me a lot of hope about what we can do in the future, as our community continues to grow and work with other people.

    I'm completely colorblind. I have a rare condition called Achromatopsia. I have never once seen the shade of blue or green or red. I see everything in a way that is unique to me, and maybe like a couple million other people? So it's just kinda weird to be consistently existing, experiencing a new sensation, that to me, is the oldest I've ever known.
    My girlfriend has told me on a few different occasions that she wishes she could switch eyes with me Cyberpunk style just to see how I see and it's the most romantic and slightly invalidating thing anyone's ever said to me.

    • @SharkBait94ex
      @SharkBait94ex Před 8 měsíci +12

      Curiosity has the better of me and I feel compelled to ask, how is it invalidating?
      Apologies if you're not comfortable sharing, I'm interested due to being a people pleasing, neurodiverse, extrovert without much of a filter, and understanding your side of it might help me avoid invalidating others accidentally.
      No worries if it's not something you want to share, I'm taking a shot in the dark and I recognise my request is a selfish one from yourself 😅
      Oh, but if it is because she wants the eye swap even after (I'm assuming) you have talked and described it to her a lot, and that makes you feel like you've not done a good job of describing it; someone could describe to me a experience/perception in the most detailed and eloquent manner possible, but I'm probably still going to want to experience it personally. Especially if it is as unique an experience as your own. My desire to do so would be independent of the other's quality of description, it may even be a testament to how well they have done. If they hadn't been able to describe it well I would probably not be so engaged and eager to share the experience first hand.
      Apologies of this is a bit much, I sometimes feel like I shouldn't have the ability to comment online 😅
      Anyway, you have a condition that must consistently attract insistent attention and questioning whenever others hear about it, and I'm not helping that.
      Reply or no, I wish you well, random Internet stranger, much love ✌️

    One of these experiences of a new sensation was when as a man I decided to wax my legs for the first time ever because I wanted to both feel the pain of waxing to know it from experience, and also to see how it felt.
    And the shower afterwards was the weirdest shower ever. It felt like being truly naked on the legs for the first time.
    I tis similar to when you have had a beard for the longest time and you shave, and suddenly that part feels extra exposed.
    The water was running down my smooth leg skin and it was like I had never felt water before in that part of my body. And the difference is not too much, it is not like I am specially hairy or anything, but it was such a different experience.

The wildness of the existential crisis is a rough one, and surviving it is like entering an entirely different world, where so many things that were big deals before become so small, and the important things, the most sensational are the small ones that were always there that you didn't realize you could have looked out for. It looked like a freeze dried strawberry and I thought it was going to have the texture of like, a cheesepuff, but it was more dense than that. The win this past week is such a powerful example of collective action at play. Not just because a lot of people came together to make change, but because of the long-term dedicated work of those who have built and organised and educated that collective in the first place. Without Nerdfighteria there wouldn't have been such a strong force pushing, but without John and crew behind the scenes organising the push, Nerdfighteria wouldn't have pushed.
    This is basically exactly what needs to happen growing the union movement too. You need a few dedicated folks to come together and do the work to bring all the other folks on board and moving in the same direction when needed. Oh and also drawing the ire of powerful people 🙃 Would love if you two did a video on unionisation, as that's something me and my colleagues are working towards at the moment. It's such a perfect parallel, and it would give the folks pumped up by this win the knowledge of how to make wins similar to this in their own backyard ❤
