Try looking into China's debt trap in Nigeria and how Nigeria is partially becoming an Islamic state, because it makes no sense for a poverty ravaging, underdeveloped, debt drowning country Nigeria to donate millions of dollars to a developed, prosperous Islamic country Turkey. It is WILD, to say the least.

@@realjudebela yeah man, everyone feels sorry for the recent Turkey earthquake with the loss of lives and properties, but the fact is that all developed and rich countries around the world poured tons and tons of aids to Turkey speedily and still standing by them on ground helping them to rebuild.
Nigeria could have just sympathize and send Turkey condolences. After all same Nigeria never lift a finger for the African countries that was affected by same natural disasters in the same time.
But no, our mumu government would rather donate money they don't have on charities that their help is not needed for, while the country is torn apart economically and probably at the brink of bankruptcy.

Nigeria and turkey had great economic partnership, remember web Erdogan visited Nigeria last year, he got interested in Nigerian ships and Nigeria is willing to buy some of Turkish drones, sparking noise from France, in it's ability to maintain influence over West Africa air power and superiority.

Hi Femi. I stumbled on a report presented in Chinas parliament of such “investments / loans” and their values in the countries involved but cannot find it. Do you by chance have it? I’m particularly keen on those for Nigeria. @JudeBela, can you assist as well?
Well, China reportedly gave Nigeria $6 Billion for a dam. Kenya has a railway constructed, maintained and managed by China. All these projects are not generating any good revenue for the host countries. That is where the problem lies.
@@realjudebela that's false, the used of transport networks stimulate any economy in the movement of goods. It goes far beyond who operates the railway selling tickets

There's nothing wrong with China's ambitious economic agenda around the world. It all depends on how you go about doing it. Unlike the West, led by the US, China doesn't go about doing it through war mongering, regional and international gangstarism, international distabilization, genocide, regime change, dictatorship, threat or any kind of intimidation.
With that being said, if you sign a deal whereby you put the territorial sovereignity of your country on the line, just because you want money for your own selfish interests, rather than for the interests of your people and your country, then that's on you.

Guys which is better IMF, World Bank or loan from China. Conditions that are attached to both IMF and World Bank loans are more draining economically compared to that from China. Loan facility and administrative fees from both are too expensive. China assistance in infrastructure development in Africa is a win win for both parties involved, what has the West done to lift Africa from poverty. It has always been same old stories of us depending on them and when you question them sanctions follows.

I'll just like to add that China's BRI isn't debt-trap diplomacy per se. If they offer to manage a facility in a state, it is to ensure profitability. You can't cede territory like that under international law. It's even in the Chinese government's interest to make such cessation more direct so that they can benefit from any likely economic resources.
I participated in a program organised by the US Library of Congress, where they analysed this extensively, and we found that there really isn't any truth to the narrative of debt-trap diplomacy.
It's the same as investing in any country and hoping that they pay back later. International development works that way.
Thanks for the clarification. Even though some of the projects have not really been beneficial to the host countries if we want to analyse it.
Take for example the Kenyan railway project, it's run by Chinese company, it has left a heavy debt on the country with little revenue for them.
The empty airport in Sri Lanka, I wonder what economic value it serves to the country which few months ago ran into serious debt crisis that led to the collapse of the government.
The Nigerian Dam project has left the country with debt with no real economic value to the country.
The economic benefits promised seem to be on paper. All these countries have shiny new projects, some used by politicians for campaign purposes and not serving any real economic benefit to the citizens.
And the conclude, the strategic nature of the BRI and the countries being targeted has led to suspicions that China is trying to control maritime network which will be a big deal.
As you may already know, these BRI nations don't vote against China in the UN, so this might actually be a debt trap diplomacy.

I agree that mega projects in many developing economies (or LDCs) aren't profitable - at least not yet.
It's also true that LDCs usually have a higher debt burden after these projects. But the fact is that we can't downplay the benefits of some projects. Granted that a dam in Nigeria isn't providing optimal performance as it should, there is a fair chance that a better economic management team or President would put it to use. It has been placed there to address the power deficit in the country. It's left to the country to utilise it to cut down its public expenditure on more expensive power generation systems and use the dam. If they can support SMEs and boast the emerging markets with revenue saved from that, they can pay back their loans.
I recall fondly that Sheikh Al-Maktoum of Dubai was recorded as being wasteful when he undertook to build a large dry port, but he did it anyway. Today, his son is the present ruler and is utilising the port in ways his father only imagined.
Africa needs to build infrastructure that reflects and projects its estimated growth rate. An extensive rail network in Kenya sounds wasteful now, but in 20 years (or 2050), Africa will be competing as the most populated region in the world. What sounds like overpopulation is actually an opportunity.
You know that we hail Abuja for being a city built with future concerns in mind. The roads were way larger than Lagos. Today, many people prefer the Abuja life to Lagos life because of the key difference in project delivery with future considerations.
You know, this topic is really good and if you press further, we should have sub-topics like "why is Africa in constant default" or "beyond aid for African LDCs".
I know that Sri Lanka was a bad example, but I also have been looking at the model they practice. We know that they fell due to corruption and fiscal irresponsibility. It wasn't really the Chinese debt that affected them. You may recall that China tries to prop up its neighbours and prevent economic collapse a lot. See the recent example of Pakistan.
Lastly, we should remember that debt is never really paid off. It's serviced. A lot of countries owe China. Nigeria's debt to China is just over $4B, and our FX reserves are $37B strong (cbn.gov.ng/intops/reserve.asp). The USA owes China well over $850B. There's nothing really sinister in owing China money. The mistake is that many countries haven't been prudent. But Nigeria has never defaulted on debt service to China, so it's pretty sustainable for us. With better management, Africa will overcome its debt problems. After all, if we weren't owing China, it would be the IMF or WBG.

I forgot to address the point of voting against China.
On a lighter note, you know that none of the US' friends vote against them at the UN naw... You and I know the several human rights abuses US forces committed in Afghanistan and Iraq. The former ICC Prosecutor, Fatuo Bensouda, decided to investigate them and they sanctioned her and so many good people working in the ICC. All the allies kept quiet. In international politics, some countries will always have a team. We shouldn't be alarmed that China is building their own team.
By the way, do you think Nigeria would have more economic viability as a member of the BRICS group, or should we stay unaligned officially?

@JudeBela, thank you for a nice documentary.. However, Bros the mathematics does make sense to me. If China borrows billions to build infrastructure to poorer countries and these countries cannot pay, debt will still be in China's balancesheet since the countries has defaulted on the loan. So how does China recup that loan through seizing an airport that nobody visits and a port with low economic activities? Do they have influence? Yes but I don't know how that will translate in repairing the debt. 99 years lease possibly can but I will like to see economic plan for that debt recovery. Except they are serving the loan by another means, China is in trouble financially for these defaulted loans.
Also if you say China's private sector is not involved in BRI then which Chinese construction companies are doing the infrastructure building in Asia and Africa?

There's a detailed answer to these questions in the sources I dropped in the description box above. Do have a read of the Belt and road initiative. It is majorly China’s desire to control these trading routes. The project is yet to record any profit for China. But at least the Asian giants now have influence in these regions.
Check out how these countries have voted in UN resolutions involving China of late.

It's true that there's an agenda behind the Belt n Road initiative, but there's always an Agenda in every form of foreign help. Either dependence through Goods, Foreign country bettering their image, or making money through loans that our countries desperately need. This time, china making money on loans and providing work for its contractors. But honestly, this is the best Deal African countries can get if we want to get into a state of rapid development. It's the lesser evil, and also not a bad idea to have multiple big players in the world politic scene. Having one country being say all be all means there's no freedom of choice.
I welcome the BNI cause it brings development in critical infrastructure and at provides more than all the other predatory loans we've had to take till now

Historically the strengths of China has always been based on trade. So someone intelligent looked to the past to build their future. Africa will do well to look back to its ancient past to determine its future and cut off the European continent and all of the Western countries that came out of it from benefiting from Africa’s natural resources in an exploitative way. It’s the best way forward for Africa with over 50 percent of the entire planet’s natural resources under our feet.

Lol like you were blind to see when the country was suffering for basic things like drugs, fuel and so many other things, their economy was about to crashed, the country was begging for IMF Bail out, all thanks to Chinese death trap loans, the people had to protest and chase out their president out of the presidential villa because the hardship was too much.

In your summary, it is obvious that you do not support this China's BRI that many countries are happily jumping into because of developmental opportunities. I was expecting to hear from you an alternative advice for these developing countries that are deemed to benefit from BRI. I suppose you would rather support the continuous neo-colonization of the developing countries' resources by the Western Countries. Can you remember or mention any major infrastructure like airport, seaport, or road projects built or being built by any Western nation in Africa without interfering in the internal affairs of the country? This debt trap slogan is just a Western propaganda to many ignorant Africans.
I do believe in what Chinese believe: that it is better to chew or eat bitter food and be free, than to eat sweet food and be a slave. I wish you also mentioned how Chinese rose to be an economic superpower today - how the Western Countries murdered, enslaved, ravaged, and occupied them until 1946 when CCP was formed by just 4 revolutionalist men.
Western Countries have kept us, Africans, undeveloped for decades and will continue to do so. All wise Africans should support its people or nations to take advantage of these Chinese developmental offers, and negotiate wisely. Western Countries can only offer us sweet food and keep us undeveloped. That's what they know best.
If BRI is bad as you portray it, why is BRICS now becoming BRICS+? You can only remain a victim of a bully until you get a defender.

It's a very ambitious program and many of these countries are trying to run away from the US influence, but to China? I wonder why.
@@realjudebela Am really surprised you asked why? Have you seen the impact of the Western sanctions on poor countries. Why can’t countries choose the countries they want to do business with without threats of sanctions or seizure of the countries foreign reserves just because it is saved in their countries. BRICS will give countries alternative choice and that will give them opportunities to trade and do business with countries of their choice. Look at Saudi Arabia, economic situations with the USA and it’s allies has been frosty of late. But moving more closer to China, Russia and other Arabian countries has helped them a lot economically.

It's nothing short of modern slavery.
The rail line constructed for Kenya for example, China gave them the loan but not in cash. They brought in Chinese companies to build the railways, the train is managed by chinese companies, the workers are Chinese, but the government of Kenya has to pay the debt to China. How does that make sense?
China is basically using these 3rd world countries to create employment for its citizens because there's no more infrastructural development going on in mainland China.

As someone who has had his rights violated, it It's a bit shocking to hear you talk about gay rights, which are human rights getting relegated to merly a cultural issue. Being told by the West that getting hanged or locked up for fourteen years is bad shouldn't just be a "cultural issues." By the way, the belt and road initiative have mostly all failed because oftentimes when china gives out money to these countries its usually squandered which by the way this is something that Western countries that lend out money to poor countries have also been dealing with. Although this is not to make western countries look like angels they also come with their own baggage.
