This might sound dumb, but I believe bot matches are also a factor here. I'm part of a FB community dedicated to Pokemon Unite, and is interesting to see how many players proudly share their results because they for 20+ KOs and claim the Pokemon they used felt broken sometimes. Just to figure out it was a bot match all along.

Ironically enough Scizor is my main who I have realized I cope pretty hard with lately. I've had some amazing moments with him where I'm 1v4 the whole team just sustaining the whole fight and getting KOs. But then there are many more times where I'm getting CCd into oblivion and having no real value for the team at Ray. I find this theory hilariously true and I think I've been cured of the Goodra affect. Thank you Dr. Spragles

As a Scizor co-main, I think the blind pick environments play a big part in this.
Sometimes you will pick a whole team of physical attackers or melee Pokemon like Speedsters and All Rounders, and that will be the one time you run into a Scizor or Goodra.
Most of the time though, the people who think it’s broken are the people charging headfirst into it and feeding it nonstop without actually thinking about how to fight it - both Scizor and Goodra aren’t good for a reason.

Playing Pokemon UNITE comes with Peak End Rule, because you keep playing it for remembering these fun and pop off moments while sort of forgetting that most games are pretty meh or even miserable and you can't find an ounce of teamwork or strategy in your team

I don't think you're completely wrong in a vaccuum. The Peak end rule is definitely at play, and it's an important aspect of game design, especially in this format. And this goes both ways : people will remember how peak it felt when they trounced an opposing team with a pokemon, but they'll also bear the scar of when a given pokemon annihilated their team and they felt helpless.
This is, I think, where Goodra gets its reputation on the joint context of the rule and the format. Pokemon like Scizor, Goodra and Gengar, usually hit their massive peak in the most critical moment of the match : when the min 2 countdown hits and Ray appears.
They are pokemon with the potential to completely reverse the flow and steal games that are otherwise helpless. Further, I think in the case of a pokemon like goodra, the bad win rate can be explained by the fact that many average players will stop playing for the objectives after they start feeling invincible, especially in solo queue. You see it all the time : Your team is crushing it, and the mvp somehow didn't make it to the big team fight at the end, ensuring your loss.

    • @Runmindrun
      @Runmindrun Před 7 měsíci

That’s what I was thinking if people only remember the peak of the Pokémon’s performance and their kit is made for their peak to be shown at the most important times (team fights pre ray and the ray team fight) then that makes the peaks high enough to make them as good as we say they are. (In the right hands)

    • @romcade9908
      @romcade9908 Před 7 měsíci +1

Yes you are right that scizor and goodra are good at team fighting, but the crucial thing to remember is that this is true only in certain conditions. The condition needed for these is that the enemies need to be grouped together, no long unstoppable moves, no stun etc. These are just too many conditions needed to be satisfied for a Pokemon to be useful. If there is wiggly or mime or blastoise you are doomed because of the stuns as you don't have anything in your kit to counter it and regain your momentum.

There are three things that contribute to this phenomenon not mentioned, first one is some people aren't great at the game (like how a level 11 opponent destroys a level 8 team) second is your team lacks coordination (Sableye seems broken when he can target one or two opponents away from everyone else) the last one is lack of exposure (Zacian used to be broken, if you don't play Zacian and don't fight it you could still think it's broken). Thanks for the prognosis doctor.

Personally, I play a lot of Goodra. I make a big spectacle of it because Im a pretty good Goodra player, but I really dont think its broken. Im of the opinion that Goodra is way easier to play around for your team and harder for the enemy, and players that cant deal with Goodra (ie. The whole playerbase) are the ones that overblow how good it is. I just take advantage of everyone's perspective and dominate cause they're scared of me.

Tho I recently got goodra and dont have that much playtime on it about 200 matches only and keeping in mind I play for fun
      Goodra was a good buy
As you said that a lot of people dont know how to play around it and I can 1v3 all day with them
If they do know it then I just stay with a buddy and try to tank dmg as defender
Sure I die most of the time but if my teammate made it out or scored in the meantime then I would say it was worth it
Now in the context of the vid yes I did have some moments where I felt invincible but I was aware it was only because of the opponent's letting me do it
I would say I am in the same boat as you where we just play it for fun and actually use our brains to play it

I definitely spew a lot of Scizor hype as a Scizor main, but I also still frequently ask for buffs, because I understand that the character is performing quite poorly in this meta. I definitely have some Peak End Rule for it, but I've also used it to counter argue a Waterbear main that still thought Waterbear was OP after the recent nerfs, stating "Just because YOU can hyper carry with it, get 25 kills and double 100K, doesn't mean the character is good, it just means YOU'RE good with THAT character" I also mainly preach about the wonders of Double Hit, since really the only content creator I see using that move set is CrisHeroes, (who by the way, is the content creator with probably one of the highest opinions of Scizor, questioning if it was secretly B-tier at one point! Coincidence?) while everyone else always seems to use Swords Dance. While swords dance does high end screen damage, Double Hit feels like it can carry harder, and is sure as hell a lot more fun and addicting! It's just the feeling of flying around the battlefield, chasing things down that thought they were already miles out of your reach, whilst also never dying, and getting tons of kills! it's kinda like how Goodra is kinda a mix of a Defender and All-Rounder with it's level of sustain and damage, Scizor feel kinda like a mix of a Defender and a Speedster with Double Hit! Taking a lot to go down, similar to a lot of defenders, but sacrificing some of that absurd durability to get really good and quick kills on squishies, as well as getting the same kind of resets as most Speedsters!

This might be a hot take, but I think Crustle is part of the Peak End Rule too. Yes, I admit its buffs have made it better, I've seen it in tournament play, but I'm not going to judge what I see from pro players to what I see in my soloq matches. Crustle players are back cappers, run away from team fights, and there are just better defenders and mons that do what it can do better. Its higher win rate recently is because we as a community forgot how to play against it because it's been out of meta for so long

But I must agree that fending off all 5 opponents and barely living for my team to come in and sweep as made me pretty biased and infact am infected with the Goodra effect. Goodra for life!

  • @typeouetco1626
    @typeouetco1626 Před 7 měsíci +2

I think you have 2 big categories of pokemons suffering from this.
On one side you have hyper sustaining brawlers like goodra, metagross, scissor etc. where getting the exact timing and positioning right against the right pokemons can win you 1v2 or 3 because you always barely survive
And on the other side you have assassins like talonflame (brave bird or fly), mimikyu etc... where you either get a super easy kill or die/have to run, so instead of 5 kills being a 5v1, it's 5 1v1

For me my Peak and Rule is Decidueye. I main it and feel like it's so so good. Cuz if you win your first gank or at least don't die in it, at your second gank you'll have spirit shackle and couple lvls above their lane meaning your shackle does up to like 70% of their HP in one hit. From there the momentum can build and it's almost a free game.
At least... that's what I wish happen everytime. But it's heavily team/lane reliant. Your lane has to win and your team needs to have a good frontline or else you will just get folded very quickly

As something close to a Goodra one-trick (my top 2 personal fav mon period), I actually really agree with this video! I’m not too active in the community, but from what I see people really assess it by the sum of its moments rather than the average, and like
Yeah I’ll fill the role of tank every game I play it, but to say it’s S Tier because of a single well-placed Ray 1v4 is absurd. Cuz I’ll have games where I flounder just as hard as I’d pop off otherwise. I’m choosing to bear the learning curve because I like the Pokémon, not because I think it can stand with the best.

Another fact is that Goodra has poor range and bad Unite move (which I had expected it to be in unstoppable mode or last longer than 6 sec while the hp reccovered can be easily worn down, unlike snorlax).

This might not be exactly the topic of the video but I wanted to share my recent experience to my fellow spragels supporters and Pokémon Unite fans.
The recent matchmaking is the single worst thing that ever happened to the game. I’ve been playing since release and even through broken metas like zacian or mewtwo I always felt there are things you can do. But recently matchmaking has reached new lows. I get paired with afks or griefers in one out of three games. There is almost never someone who picks tank or support which constantly means I fill that role (what I usually do) which doesn’t give me the option to play the role I’m best at or what I would like to play/practice.
Coupled with the fact that I have a win rate that is 10% lower in the current season than all previous ones is absolutely insane. I get matched with cinderace using shell bell, exp share and spoon demanding to go into the jungle or when I have one of 10 games where I get to go there both my lanes die constantly when I’m not there…
I absolutely love mobas and have been playing them since dota and Pokémon Unite has been a very fun experience for me these past two years but I’ve decided to stop playing. Even though it’s a game and shouldn’t be takes too seriously I cannot deny getting extremely frustrated of losing almost constantly. Sadly I’m an attacker main and that means I am most capable of carrying my team if I get to play that role but without tanks there is really not that much of a chance and when I play tank the attackers I get paired with grief when dying in lane once or are so obsessed with getting stacks that they won’t group for any objective.
I will continue to watch spragels videos and hope he will release videos about the matchmaking situation for me to know if I can consider getting back into the game but as of now it pains me to be parting with unite in such a way.
Thank you everybody that has read up to this point and I’m interested in what your recent experiences have been like.
    Cheers

Mamoswine for me. I've played Mamo since its launch and gotten to master every season with it and I know that I've probably had more bad games than good. But the only ones I can remember are when I CC 3 people for 20 seconds and win the big fight by myself, or when I hold the opposing top laner at level 4 for what feels like forever because I just take all their last hits as swinub

What is it called when a Pokémon/character is generally perceived to be bad, but it’s actually literally a skill issue and the character is powerful? Back when I played League, I was a menace with Heimerdinger. Even after the rework that was also a massive nerf, I was consistently outdamage ADCs by a significant margin (anywhere between 15%-50% more) and a normal amount of takedowns.
I know total damage is not the end all be all, but such a significant margin can’t be ignored.

The problem with this is I'm finding Goodra to be higher tier based on fighting AGAINST it. I've never played as Goodra, but every single one I run into is a massive problem for me and my team. I often am placing Pokemon higher because I find them consistently difficult to deal with, not strictly because I have good games with one.

you could apply this to your overall unite experience as well as individual games. Glaceon comes to mind -- games where I've dominated have been so extremely satisfying, even though it doesn't happen as often post-nerfs I'll stick frequently pick them

Not the Gumball clips added! I love Hectors mother she’s so funny. Gumball aside. I think Goodra as a defender could use a bit of love. Scizor as well. They’re both these All Rounder/Defender hybrids and they need to stick to one role and not flop at trying to do both. I wish Goodra had more CC in its kit. Like better pulls or multiple stuns with acid spray. I personally wish Acid Spray marked multiple enemies and let Goodra dash and stun multiple kinda like how Lucario’s bone rush e speed works.
To answer the question at the end of the video I genuinely fell victim to the Goodra effect. I have had more moments when I popped off with it than its actual winrate generally is.

What makes Scizor and Goodra so prone to this rule is that they can be massive ‘noob-killers’, and often steamroll games if the enemy team doesn’t know how to properly play against them. Yet when the enemies actually employ this counterplay, they’re both completely helpless. This leads Scizor and Goodra to be significantly better in SoloQ than in competitive.
This ironically means neither will probably ever be top tier in competitive, since they would probably break SoloQ and get nerfed long before they would be considered top tier in competitive.

I think you may be overcomplicating it.
Players without much experience or on the fly critical thinking end up getting their entire teams soloed by Goodra and Scizor.
I see it all the time. Players walk up to fight Dragon Pulse Goodra in melee range while grouped together.
Every time there's an enemy Goodra, there's 1 or 2 moments within the game where i feel compelled to tell my teammates to stop standing directly in front of the Goodra.

I feel like it’s mainly because I only pick it when my team has a lot of cc so it can actually get in close without people outranging and running away. I also use muddy water most of the team (but only if there’s a support on my team).

For me, this case applies to Delphox. I see the opposing Delphox pop off, get my entire team fire-spinned, hitting the most valuable unite move and destroying us. Whenever I play it, I feel like I'm dead weight to my team, can never hit the Fire Spin the same way, waste my Unites, if I don't waste the Unite, it's kinda just there, barely dealing damage or such, etc. And I quickly feel bored from playing it, too. To be absolutely honest, I have no idea what the community's current standpoint on Delphox is, but that's one that comes to mind.

I think very often this also comes down to counterplay and game situation. It's probably fair to say that every pokemon is overrated by some people or a lot of people, and this includes the top pokemon too. A funny case is urshifu. Yes it got nerfed, BUT it for sure didn't go from the S tier best allrounder premier jungler at worlds that so many people considered it, down to unplayable garbage now. Perfect example. People remembered all the times when level 5 urshifu came down to lane and smashed them inside their flux zone, but they didn't remember when it's unevolved and kubfuu is literally impotent. I think the same of zoroark. People always remember the full combo that oneshot half a team, but they forget all the times when zoroark gets stunned by some random cc and gets koed in less than a second. Dragapult is on the same boats. And I think scizor too. All this pokemon have some amazing strenghts, but also some counters. Either they are hypervulnerable to cc, or they rely on having a supporter with them, or they work against certain comps. Hell, even flail snorlax has some times where if your team doesn't properly play into it you all get murdered. It's all about counterplay.

2:43 I believe that win rates don’t necessary reflect actual viability, simply because that reflects ranked, not your standard multiplayer game. The average unite player probably plays some squishy ranged attacker and whenever they get crushed by a well rounded Pokémon controlled by a well rounded player, that Pokémon just holds a special place in their head. “Oh, that meta gross absolutely carried the other team. Guess metagross is godly,” instead of “oh, that metagross absolutely carried the other team. That player must be pretty good.”

For sure it is the effects of peak end rule, but it is also something else entirely which I don't hear people praising the game for that often; exciting and satisfying gameplay design - people just love throwing smack at the big corporation and banter at the game balance, but there's a very good reason why people still play this game - why people main certain pokemon mains most if not all pokemon and their gameplay is fun and engaging, but also very much reflective of the pokemon they are supposed to represent - it just feels damn good to divebomb in with Brave Bird as Talonflame and blast that Hyper Beam as Dragonite, or ambushing and slicing enemies specifically as Zoroark - and when you like that pokemon the good sides of their gameplay just promote that feeling even further - Unite might be doing many questionable things and are missing the mark often, but they also do many things right but we're taking them for granted nowadays and don't appreciate them as much

Also whoever says that goodra is better than umbreon needs to play a melee character for a bit and see how fun it is to be put in a cage that you can’t even eject button out of. At least with goodra, I can dodge the beam.

Adding my 2 cents, the peak end effect is true, but for goodra etc there is ALSO another reason that was not mentioned. Some pokemon kits (like in any moba) are great at was is generally called "NOOB STOMPING". There are pokemons/moves that are underperfoming in matches with very skilled knoledgeable players but shine in lower ranks. If people walk in to goodra with cinderace instead of kiting it goodra will perform well. As an example from different game different time same situation 10 years ago more or less in LOL master yi was known to be great at noob stomping but with 0 value in higher tiers of skill.

I started feel like "Okay, so finnaly he actually good then."
Day after, I played again, remembering the moment. I lose. Misserably. Thats was a luck? Just my team is bad? NO! Its all my fault because my excitement turns into pride that made me lose my mind and do really bab at that match.
When the peak happen, I never learn of "How did I achieve this again?". Sometimes when the peak happens, I usually changed my playstyle and I didn't even realized it. And I started playing good now.
Anyway. I loved my boy. Just that.

Goodra is the skill check Pokémon of this game. Bad players will just stand right in front of it, intentionally getting hit by its moves, and then complain about how hard it is to kill. Just outrange it so it can hit you, or wait for dragon pulse to miss. It’s the exact same as Orisa in Overwatch. Just knowing how to play the game well kinda shuts her down.
