    You two deserved for things to go better. I'd have given up long ago. I would have taken the boat out to a deep river somewhere and sunk it! Fair play to you both for staying with it. It will be worth it eventually when you're out cruising on long hot summer days. Love your videos x

      @@TheNomadicCrobot. Thanks heaps guys. Well I was sent home today (15th) but have to go back on Monday, keyhole surgery. Thanks so much for the lovely thought, maybe just as well we didn’t get over there eh. I’ll make it for Christmas but I doubt it will be with the amount of “Christmas cheer” I’d normally celebrate with. Again thanks for the lovely thought and I’ll see you, though a bit lighter, again soon. ❤️ ❤️ ❤️

    Guys, try to sand the scratched tile, slate is quite soft! You should be able to rescue it if you're careful. Use fine grit.
    BTW the replacement tile looks lighter when held horizontally but not very different when you put it up to the wall. As a natural material, there's a lot of variation in slate so if you want a consistent look, you have to use tiles from the same batch - but even that is not a guarantee that they will be exactly the same shade and colour. Also, clean the tiles properly because fine dust hides the real colour.

    • @TheNomadicCrobot
      @TheNomadicCrobot  Před 7 měsíci +1

      we did actually try but it didnt work massively plus we didnt want the tile to ;took to different. Yes I imagine it was from a different batch unfortunately luckily we think it will work, Thank for all your advice ❤️😊

    So I do not have the best news on the floor. The oil was prob stored with 2 many temp flexuations. The wood and the boat temp was way 2 cold, so the oil congealed. Esp since its under the water line. I would leave the floor alone for now, as you need heat in order to truly be able to do anything. Get the stove done, heat the boat & as the boat heats up, take up all the congealed & overlay& extra oil carefully, softly, but fast. You will see the change happening as the boat gets warmer. Once you have that done, you can evaluate what to do. But you will need to leave the floor alone (after you took up the extra oil) for a few days while the boat is warm. That way it has a chance to absorb fully.
    Generally its always at least 24 hrs at a temp of 10 degrees Celsius for most applications (oil, laquer etc). I know it says a few hrs, but most times that isnt enough time for the wood to absorb & for the layered material to dry properly. Now this is at at least a 10 degree working temperature. Anything under that temperature lengthens the time between coats. I usually do 1 degree = 1 addt day. Meaning at 3 degrees outside, Id wait an addt 7-8 days between coats. I have never had any issues doing it that way.
    The issue as said the oil prob was either already congealed&/or not stirred properly, plus the oil also was way 2 cold & the material/ air was as well. These arent conditions where on can do these things.
    So, I cant stress this enough. Get heat on the boat, take up the extra oil & if it still looks bad, you will have to do tests to see at what point its okay to sand it back. Cause doing it 2 early before all is dried, or with all that extra oil on it, will prob mess with the sand paper& smear& you will be even more unhappy.
    Now those rags /cloth you are using... it says on the can that they can self-ignite. I know ppl do not think this ever happens. It actually does & does far more frequently than ppl realize. You can neutralize them by putting em in a bucket of water. If you hang em to dry only do that in an area where nothing can else can burn, esp once they fall on the ground (while on fire).
    Last but prob not least yet of useless knowledge I can share .. that oil should (could) give off quite the odor when applied. One prob shouldnt sleep on the boat as it dries.. however I assume due to it being so cold, it most likely had not the full strength smell to it. So as it warms up, dont be suprised if the smell increases.
    Now I know some ppl already mentioned how dark it is. When you picked out the oil, you showed a sample of it. I also think its a touch 2 dark, as the wood darkens anyways with time. So Id go a lil lighter on the oil and let nature, and air darken it with time. That is if you feel lile sanding it off. You can rent a machine &I highly recommend doing so, its well worth every penny & will take enough off so its back to where it started. (I will never go back& do all larger areas with a rented floor sander. I usually use two diff grit)
    On the slate tile. See if you can't find youtube or video on how to fix black slate tiles.
    I am so sorry this happened to you guys- after all this work& being so careful & having a carpet on top etc.
    The good news is, that there is still enough time to get it all done before Xmas. Then before trying the oil, use the inside of the lid, or just a small amount on the floor and see if its the right shade for you. That way you can fix it with a handheld sander in minutes.
    Anyways good luck with all of it. Obviously my comment is, how I would handle &rectify the situation, thaz doesnt mean that its the only way. It means it is one way of many. You could also call the Company who makes the oil (Customer Service) explain what happened& ask em to advise you how to best proceed. Or a marine supply that sells paint& oil (so prob a sail shop) & ask em& look and see if you can find videos on it as well. That way you have well rounded info& can make the decision that best suits you guys.
    I am rooting for you both & cross the fingers.

      @TheNomadicCrobot  Před 7 měsíci +1

      tyes we think we done this in far to cold conditions, maybe having the fire burning would have been a good call. I think we may test some larger areas before going in again as we only done a very small test on tiny bit of wood.
      Thanks so much for your in depth guidance....so helpful, we are toying with maybe going for a lighter shade now.
      thats interesting about the cloths...becca did warn me and told me to hang then correctly.
      The slate tile luckily has now been replaced so were ready to go full steam ahead...what a nightmare, thanks again and have a lovely week , The Crobots xx

    Lakeland make a product called 'Worktop Wonder'. We use it on out slate hearth and it brings it up beautifully disguising any small scratches, would possibly even out the colour too? Good luck!

    Yikes 😮!!! You two don’t seem to catch a break. I liked the floor light and thought you were going to just wax it. But…..maybe the dark will hide dust etc better. I am sure you will be able to work it out. The tile looked lighter, but when you placed it against the others on the wall, it looked the same 🤔. I just hope that gets resolved so you have heat soon. You are unstoppable! Hang in there.

      it really does, yes we did do a sample but that was in the summer, I cant help think the weather conditions and lack of a fire probably didnt help

    Why can't the stove be used until the tile comes?

    • @TheNomadicCrobot

      we feel it could be quite messy getting the tile up, plus we were expecting it to be ready in a few days for collection

    Far to dark gor such a small space.
    Im thinking that you will regret this job and end up stripping it back for a rethink.
    Maybe just one coat, then sand and seal,,,,
    Maybe a lighter colour to help with the ambient lighting.
    🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔

    Just use the tile you have. It will be partially blocked by the stove, and only you two and twelve thousand others will know.
