- Batons on the narrowboats are the foundation of the Fit Out. It provides the ability to put the side panels on, determine where each panel will join the next as well as providing stability for partition walls. Home improvement fitted as well as top tips to reduce condensation in the roof.

It’s the detail that creates the foundation. It’s why I believe the boat will look just as good in a few decades time. It’ll need looking after, but then, if it’s worth doing right, it’ll need the correct amount of care. I’m sure the boat will be special. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas.
Underfloor insulation is somethig I had thought about many times,but never seen on a narrowboat build video. To me, it just makes sense.

Hi Joan. Ah yes. The ? About the name. I have a thought, but I’ve still got some time before the sign writer puts the paint on the side. Still in dither and delay about the toilet. Doing more research which is giving me clarity. I’ll post my decision in the New Year. Boat bonding is great. The more I do, the more I understand. I do hope DIY boaters learn from these vlogs as I don’t think there has been an intimate view from a fit out professional point of view. I know others have covered it as DIYers and doing a great job, but, as I know, ‘you don’t know what you don’t know’. Recognise the Foxy Fellas and Captain Gary have vlogged their journey too. Glad to see your enjoying your bonding. It was great to see your video of our boats crossing over We have just spent our second week on NBHG and I can say it has been really good, few niggles, but Mark will sort them in the new year. Condensation has not been an issue at all and honestly it is warm and toasty. We have settled nicely into our marina and they opened up the canal again so we have had our maiden voyage.
Looking forward to more of your videos, it's great to see your boat being fitted out, as you know we missed most of HG's because of covid. Have a good Christmas Chris...........

Hi Chris. Amazing how much different the boat looks with the battening, insulation and the flooring down. Some great "inside information too on the processes to reduce condensation - simple but so clever at the same time. Impressed too with the precision of the fitment so far, and how it all has to be done according to the plan or the "final bits" won't fit properly - must be a challenge on something this size. I managed to create something to keep momentum going with a few tips for those wanting to insulate using spray foam. I’m learning lots and doing boat bonding was always going to be a good thing. Your boat is looking great. Thanks for explaining things. On the ballast, do all narrow boats have ballast covering the entire lower area of the boat, or does it depends? Happy Christmas.
I think it depends on the interior fit out. I don’t think mine is too tech. The Fit Out Pontoon is a bespoke build. There are boats that truly bespoke with all different requirements and designs. I think mine is more traditional in my needs. The front bay and the end two at the back are free from ballast. It can be added later for trimming should it need it.
Some boats have a ‘Range’ cooker which can take the need for ballast out of that area of the boat.

What a difference now the floor is down. I can’t think of anyone else who I’ve seen putting ballast bricks in who have put roofing felt underneath, I expect the boat yard said to do that, others have spread tile spacers under them. I’ve seen comments about this very thing but you have explained the condensation/air flow very well and it seems like a good idea to me, maybe others will now do the same. Have you mentioned you will be having spray foam insulation? I can’t remember, it could be the reason you taped up the batons. You’re all over it Bob. The bitumen and roof felt was put down by the The Fit Out Pontoon prior to me laying the bricks for ballast. Maybe other builders may consider the roof bows in due course. It isn’t known if any other fit out or boat builder does that as standard. The tape will be explained next week but you’ve got the idea. Never considered it I’ve seen other people cut away foam but that too makes sense when it’s explained. Happy Christmas.

Thanks for watching Lee and Ali. I suppose, as I didn’t actually do it, the holes are big enough to put the nozzle of a spray foam gun to force the foam in. I think it’s a bit of trial and error. If I were doing it, I’ll put as many holes in the first 2-3 to work out if the foam is getting through as needed. Once happy, just the one at either end. Tips like insulating the roof bows is priceless. Things coming up, engine size and reason this Tuesday. Electrical system, very near future. Had a meeting last Thursday. So when that kit is bought, I’ll align the vlog. Toilet, again shortly. Lots of background activity along with the actual fit out. Lights will be a good one too. Really interesting, your going into depth about control of condensation, even for someone with no interest in owning such a boat.. Good to hear about the bitumen and roofing felt under the bricks and the thought given to the circulation of air. I’m sure this video will be of especial interest to those coming along behind you in that they’ll know what questions to ask and what to look for.
It’s really starting to look good, Chris. I can see that Mark has high professional standards just from the way they keep their chisels and the care they take in sharpening them. That’s why it’s interesting to see the inclusion of clips of the work being done and little details that some might consider trivial.
Another excellent video, Chris. I hope there’s one next week to help us survive the Christmas equivalent of water boarding.
Finally, what was the purpose of the Sellotape you were laying down the vertical battens?
Thanks Martin. It’s the detail that tells the story, much the same as the detail that I’m sure will be put into the boat. My motivation was to assist others in making their boat with some ideas from a professional fit out company. I’ve held some content for next week to keep momentum. The taping of the batons will be revealed then. The result saves an enormous amount of time if you were doing a DIY fit out. Happy Christmas.

Looks good. The insulation below the floor boards is a great idea that's where most of the cold damp air will come from. Are you going to insulate the ceiling as well? It seems with that big metal roof you will have a lot of heat pushing down into the boat without it. It will also keep the heat from escaping on cold nights. We have an additional room that has open beam ceilings that looks great, but on hot days the heat just pushes through it and on cold days all the heat escapes, this room is about 10-15 degrees (f) different than the rest of the house.

I just want to do some bonding and understanding about how it all fits together. If it goes wrong, at least I’ll have a little knowledge of what’s gone on and how it could be put together again. I don’t get a discount, I have saved two days in time so I hope it’ll be finished 2 days quicker. I know it doesn’t work that way. Spray foam next week. Merry Christmas.

Hi Alex. Just checked to be sure. It was 25mm and no moisture barrier. There is a need for air to circulate under the sub floor. Hope that helps.

Insulation ?
Hi Mike. It's been a long time since anyone has commented on this vid so I'm a bit rusty. Do you mean spray foam or under floor insulation. I think the spray foam happened shortly after (I did video it) and the under floor insulation was something I'm so pleased I got. The floor is cold enough as it is. I hate to think what it would have been like had it not been laid.
