    Try charging both batteries and see if there is a drawdown over time. That would not show up on a computer readout, so they'll never diagnose it.

    If the batteries have been replaced and it killed another set for sure an electrical problem with the trucks system. Been doing it since new likely a problem in the harness somewhere. On a new truck it will be a nightmare to find. Probably take their best tech 3 days assuming they have a good one. I would push for another truck as it will take awhile to get this one sorted. A lot of new vehicles will kill the batteries if they sit 2 weeks or more because of the gps and on call features talking all the time. We put master disconnects on the big farm machinery so the GPS stuff won't run the batteries down when they sit a couple of weeks.

      This is such a sudden failure that it should be easy to find... I mean in two hours it went from perfectly normal to 3 volts and nothing reacting in any way... totally dead.
      Of course all I can go by is what I see and hear. The engine started immediately , no starter drag just two hours earlier.... The gauge showed normal charging and there is no indications of low voltage..
      Also where is the safety that stops the drain???? On my 1500 2017 year model heck even my 2011 3500 HD there is a system that shuts things down like leaving a light on or radio and the system voltage gets too low to restart the truck... This has never shown up on the 2020..
      My 1500 is towed behind the motor coach and I have to leave the key turned to accessory so the wheels will unlock.. I run the engine every couple of hours to charge that battery and when I go to start it I see a message that battery saver mode was enabled... Never seen any message of any kind on the 2020, just a totally dead truck

      SO sorry..... Tomorrow will be the start of the 7th week in the shop this time... going on 14 weeks in the shop now... They really don't know what is happening. This time they gave it another update and the commercial service manager go out and starts it every 2 days... NO driving or letting it warm up, get hot or bounce around like normal driving...
      Was told that they think a failed automatic radio update is the cause and it keeps the modules awake.. . I asked if the awake modules could take both batteries down to 3 volts in under three hours and IF so why was the computer not monitoring the batteries and stopping it when the voltage went too low to start the truck? " Good Question" was the answer.

    Have read about radio not turning off after shut down (over the air update should fix), 4 bolts that hold down fuse panel not torqued to specs(53 lb.inch), truck thinks trailer is connected after disconnecting(?), glow plug modulator (?) and the latest one -behind back seat cause chafing of wire causing lin bus not shutting down (2-12-2021). Check all of these. Hopefully, it corrects the problem. I don't own one, but been researching to purchase over a year. Fingers crossed!!! I have a 2020 GMC 2500 Duramax. I'm just now replacing both batteries at 80k mi. I had it hooked up to a battery tender after a trip pulling the camper and in about 3 days the batteries were down to 3.5 volts each. The original batteries are testing fine outside the truck after I got them charged so I'm wondering if I have some sort of parasitic draw and curious if it's tied to towing somehow.

Love the truck, but it costs me money now because it’s older and is 650 miles away from 200,000. Unfortunately the salt is killing the frame up here in rural New York, and it truly only has a few solid years left.☹️

  • @flashpointrecycling
    @flashpointrecycling Před 4 lety +2

    Just a thought from my experience with diesel trucks with 2 batteries.... Have you been leaning on the AC lately in the hot weather? Especially with the truck at Idle? They often draw more amps then are generated by the alternator, get hot, possibly burn the voltage regulator and then bury the battery. A 100 amp alternator only generates a few amps at idle. I have wasted my batteries on a long trip running the AC. When I stop for fuel, the truck will not restart. Once the AC compressor has gotten too hot, it will kill the batteries every time you turn on the AC. Ask me how I know? Mis diagnosed by 5 experienced mechanics. Correctly identified by a 16 year old kid.
    If you get it started, check the Battery Volts. 14.5 (approx) = voltage regulator and alternator is working. anything else = regulator not working, > 14.5 = alternator working, < 14.5 = alternator not working and you are discharging the battery. Chances are... your batteries are OK - just discharged. I have had similar issues when pulling a trailer with high amperage demands as well as while running a Electric/hydraulic snow plow with over plow lights.

    • @10swatkins
      @10swatkins  Před 4 lety +1

      I will pass this along..... Nothing unusual going on with the A/C or loads.. Just normal for around here... I have never had a problem with the last 5 trucks with diesel and all of them had over 200000 when I got a new one... With the exception of injectors flooding the engine in the 2001 duramax never had much of a problem with them ....
      As it is under warranty with only 8000 miles on it I am not touching anything :)

    I love my GMC truck. I don't want the first year of any model change. I bought my 2019 2500hd 6.0 because the 2020's were coming out, got a great deal, and because this model was tried, tested, and true. Whatever problems 2020's and 2021's have will be gone for the next 3 years then start all over again. They know most consumers have short attention spans. Now before you run off and buy the competition, GM/Chev don't have death wobbles, don't depreciate as fast, and well, there's a reason GMC and Chev own the tow truck market. I heard of Dodges having a problem with low batteries due to the computer getting continuous updates while the engine was off.

      I still have not been told what would use all the power in two large truck batteries in 3 hours just sitting there....After being driven for a while... They turned off my automatic emergency brake for sure... Now the truck rolls for three inches everytime I hook up a trailer even after pushing the brake button...

    2019 GMC Sierra 1500...if it sets for more then a couple of days battery is dead. Third time at the dealership right now....pretty clueless bunch....”We can’t find anything wrong”

      They turned off at least the electric brake when backing up to a trailer... Who knows what else they turned off.... Turning off something is not repairing it!

      They changed out a lot of parts and reprogramed stuff.. They ended up making me a good deal on a 2021 so I took it... The 2021 has 60,000 miles with no problems!

      nope :(
      Something in software I believe keeping the brakes of glow plugs on.... Only thing that could empty 2 large batteries in less than 3 hours....

      I have been working on it.... Next up is leveling it so I can make 4 more riser blocks for the feet... I only had 8 from the 16 x 30 lathe and need 4 more to support each foot screw. Going to be a bit skinnier that the other 6" rounds as all I have are some 4 inch solids...

      How would a computer problem discharge the power in a short time? I would think It would have to be a high use item like a hung started motor or running ac fan, or even a short...
