- Roopa Panesar (Sitar) accompanied by Bhuphinder Singh Chaggar (Tabla) plays a very special performance of Raag Yaman in Teentaal at TEDxBristol 2017: Dare to Disrupt.
ABOUT ROOPA PANESAR
Considered one of the finest Sitar players to emerge on the Indian music scene, UK based Roopa Panesar is recognised as an emerging talent, and her soulful and unique style of playing has been receiving accolades from audiences and peers alike for her outstanding ability and quality of music, which has left her listeners captivated.
At the age of seven she began her training under the great educationalist and sitar maestro Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE and under the guidance of Pandit Arvind Parikh and Ustad Shahid Parvez.
With the incredible emotional depth of her sound, she has touched the hearts of audiences far and wide and has toured extensively in the UK and Europe at major festivals and venues such as WOMAD UK, Royal Festival Hall London, BBC Radio 3, Brighton Festival, Darbar Festival at South Bank Centre, Birmingham Symphony Hall and Colston Hall, Bristol.
Roopa has collaborated with artists from many different genres, including Mercury Prize winner Talvin Singh, Laura Wright and Dirk Brosse, Belgian Symphony Orchestra, Limburg Symphony Orchestra, German Chamber Music Festival, and with music director Rob Lane for the soundtrack of the film ‘West is West’. Regarding, Roopa’s playing on ‘West is West’, Rob Lane said, ‘Roopa’s sitar playing on “West Is West” added immeasurably to my score and showed effortless versatility in moving between blues and classical Indian styles’.

I was going to say the same thing...UK is really "bringing it" in many higer level consciousness ways from what I gather.....I am thinking I should officiall become citizen having been born there many moons ago...Cheers into 2020...surreal !

A huge smile broke out on my face as soon as I heard the first 2 lines of this bandish. Before the recital was finished tears were streaming down my cheeks. Unforgettable! The 2 played as 1!!
She interacts with Tabla player all the time. With sweet smile all the time. This brings Tabla guy in full force. She always gives credit to tablachi during concert.

Very well played, with a special mention that she does not turn the Jhala part into a high speed mechine like performance but remains sensitive to present the Raga Yaman melody all through. Tabla is also well played.

It seems to be the signature set-up of TEDx. Actually, TEDx is not a primarily performance platform, but a speaking one. As the speaker is a musician. Her performance is a part of the talk.
