How to Assemble a Bag-Valve Mask

That port is not for exhalation. The port is a maximum pressure (Pmax) valve. If the inhalation pressure in the bag exceeds the value of this valve, the valve opens and releases part of the air into the atmosphere. Exhalation is done through the valve box - a large plastic thing that the filter with face mask are attached to.

Seconding this comment. Thankfully with a good seal, the exhaled air will first pass through the filter.
