Ninth House is Leigh Bardugo's best book! I HATED all of her grishaverse books and I couldn't even get through a chapter of the Wonder Woman one, but I physically could not put Ninth House down until I finished it. Unpopular opinion: I find Addie LaRue insufferable, because she clearly is not the sharpest tool in a box (nothing wrong with that, dumb heroines have a right to exist), and yet the narrative fawns over her like she is a genius.

I will probably get a lot of hate for this but I just can't get into Brandon Sanderson's books. I swear I tried with Mistborn several times, read the first book until like 50%, and I couldn't finish it. Then I was like okay, let's try The Stormlight Archives, maybe I'm craving more adult fantasy...nope, I got 30% in and don't remember a thing. It's like mixing water and oil when it comes to me reading something by Sanderson. Honestly, I thought I had an issue with the fantasy genre, but then I picked up The First Law by Joe Abercrombie, I read the trilogy super fast. An ex-colleague of mine looked at me like I just said the biggest insult known to man for not liking Sanderson's books, which is so off-putting when you want to give an author another chance. When someone bashes my favorite authors, I don't take it personally, but yeesh some people need to take a chill pill.

I'm kind of curious about "A Little Life" because everyone says it's torture porn, like I want to know how bad it can get. I will sometimes read books I'll probably dislike purely out of curiosity. And the cover, it's so funny to me! It's like the guy is saying "AAARGH not MORE torture!" and really drives home the fact that this book is sad, hahaha.
I have however read that some people dislike the author because she seems to be obsessed with gay men suffering and all her books are about that (don't take my word for it!). Like, one book is okay, but when it's a pattern it gets kind of weird.

Okay, I haven't read the Expanse books (nor do I intend to...), but I do think you might want to give the shows a try. The first couple of episodes do give you a sense that it's going to be some kind of a cop in space show, but that quickly fades. And I'd also heard the books are a bit misogynistic (as I find a lot of dude-sci-fi to be) but they seem to have fixed that in the show. The women are all kick-ass, and there are a lot of lead females, not just one for representation. One of the best female characters in the show I think I read was a compsite of something like three characters in the books, so they must've changed a lot.

    • @annai6051
      @annai6051 Před 2 lety +7

I've read 5 books in the series and I think only the first book is guilty of sexism/misogynistic things. Each book is different with different POV characters (only one character is constant), and after the first one, all other books have female POV characters and the masculine vibes are dialed down. The women are kick-ass in the books, too with complex back stories and different personalities. I think the show is a great adaptation, some characters were combines because there are a ton of them, but it's true that the sexism problem is not present in the TV version.

    i. Honestly I agree with Sjm. I read the first three books in the throne of glass series and liked the first two (I hated the ending of the second book tho) the third book was alright too, but I read enough spoilers of the rest of the series and it seems to go into a completely different direction than I thought it would from the first book. That seems to be an overall theme in her books and that's just not for me.
In general I hate when authors foreshadow a thing and then they change their mind and it was all for nothing.
ii. Honestly the a song of ice and fire books are worth continuing if you just didn't care for them because they are similar to the show. Because with every season the show made more and more changes from the books, from little things to entire character arcs being changed. I like to pretend the last season didn't happen and I am forever waiting for the books to be continued because its been pretty much confirmed that the shows ending was entirely made up by the show writers and won't be the books ending.

✨ A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourn (mystery series)
✨The Kingdom of Back by Marie Lu (magical realism, historical "retelling")

@@BookswithEmilyFox I am not a huge fan of Historical Fiction set in WW2 but I love the genre when set in other periods.
-Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet is a vast epic about the building of a medeival cathedral. Somehow, Follett makes it incredibly compelling. It's the first in a series but can be read standalone.
      - Lincoln in the Bardo by George Saunders is very very experimental so may not be everyone's cup of tea but I found it moving. It also won a Booker in 2020 I think (if you care about literary awards).
-The Mercies by Kiran Millwood Hargrave is set in 1600s Norway and focuses on the witch trials during that time. I thought it was great and I am currently reading her newest novel The Dance Tree which is about the Dancing Plague in the 1500s.
-Sin Eater by Megan Campisi sort of blends historical fiction with alternative history.
Nominally a WW2 rec, but again is a historical fiction that also merges with SciFi is Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.
There are some classics that also act as great historical fiction, including:
      - Notre Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo (this book really took me by surprise. It both was and was not what I expected it to be.)
-War and Peace by Tolstoy. This is a chunky boy but not difficult to read. The Maude translation is the best version.

I think this is the first time I've seen someone call the Expanse misogynistic. It's been a while since I read the first book though. Still it's not representative of what the rest of the series has to offer - many complex female characters included. I hope you at least consider trying the TV show where the women lead and dominate the storytelling.

My unpopular opinions: I DNFed an Ember in the ashes because I absolutely couldn’t stand major aspects of the series. The writing was good and the first book was promising, but I hated so many elements of the book eg the afterlife scenes, the love ?triangle/?square and I couldn’t get into most of the characters at all ESPECIALLY Laia whose only defining trait just seemed to be that she was…hot…? Yeah nah. Glad I spoiled the rest of the series for myself because I would not have enjoyed plowing through it.

A popular trope I "hate" is enemies to lovers, especially in a contemporary setting. It only works for me if they're enemies based on circumstance (e.g. mermaid and mermaid hunter in To Kill A Kingdom) not because they actually did horrible things to each other.
