    Hey M!
You have to read the "Dresden Files," series by Jim Butcher. I just finished "StormFront," and I loved it! It reminds me of a 1940's detective noir film in the modern age.
Harry Dresden is a PI, but he is also a wizard who has to make a living in this current world where people treat him like a joke. He has a PI business and he also contracts with the Chicago PD on X File type cases . Currently there are 17 published books in the series with two more being written.
It's not a deep, or complex magic system, but it is a fun little gumshoe novel.

If you at all like myth retellings, I think it's worth checking out Kaikeyi. The character relationships are really well written and I personally enjoyed reading about a story from another culture I wasn't familiar with. It's a great debut novel. I liked it better than Circe personally because I connected with Kaikeyi's story more. I think the writing isn't quite as good as Miller's but still quite good, especially for a debut.

For modern witches, the only one I've read that has worked for me is Payback's a Witch by Lana Harper. It's a sapphic romance but it's basically pitched as "John Tucker Must Die meets the TriWizard Tournament" - now, I've never seen John Tucker Must Die, but I know the premise and that's a pretty accurate pitch. I would check it out on Goodreads bc it's a fun book!

from what I could see on the internet it is mostly abou that he used residential schools as inspiration and source material. Alot of poc and natives just say it isnt his story to tell as a white person. Using something that was done by white people to natives and then as an white author rework that into a book is something that needs to be talked about.
But I would highly recommend listening to poc, natives comment on the whole ordeal because as another white person I dont feel like I get to judge here if this was "blown out of proportions"

I didn't really care for Holly Black's new book. I love her work, but it really wasn't the best one, maybe just 3 stars. Her children books and YA books are so good. She is one of my favorite authors.

Uprooted is terrible. You should try His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik. As well as Spinning Silver.

The Wolf and the Woodsman was so good. It's Adult fantasy, and is a standalone.

I disliked the boneshard daughter. It was kind of bland to me.

Don’t insult YA like that; Deadly Education is adult 😂😂😂

It is allegedly adult, but reads incredibly YA!

No way! It 100% reads YA (I'm big in defending female authors automatically being categorized as YA but wow :/)

I agree. I thought the world building, plot, and characterizations were thin. Reminded me of bad YA fantasy. One of my most disappointing reads this year.

Read the first two books and I'll just say it: great concept but it's quite poorly written... :/ and there wasn't enough to make me accept it lol

@@BookswithEmilyFox honestly, book two is even worse in terms of writing in my opinion....... I'm so bummed about it because I really wanted to follow Jovis and his creature/animal companion 🥺

Magic for liars is one of the worst books I read in the past 2-3 years, that’s cray-cray! House on the Cerulean was ok, loved the devil spawn but I don’t get the hype. Loved Larue, Piranesi, never reading another Morgenstern until girl discovers the meaning of plot, all icing, no cake. You might like Novik’s Spinning Silver or her Temeraire series, dragons fighting Napoleon! Avoid The binding, it’s a great concept that turns into a simple romance, sheesh. I will be picking a few here though. (My TBR is lethal, about to start WOT 9 and Stormlight 4…)

I loved "The Night Circus" but "The Starless Sea" was borderline torture to finish.. It constantly felt like it was going to turn into something but never reaching. Maybe that was the whole point, but it just left me empty and frustrated.
