Clinical examination of the hand can be quite challenging, as it is more engaged than many of the other orthopaedics examinations. We'll help with your medical school revision through a demonstration of a hands examination OSCE.
As with any orthopaedic assessment, the Hand Examination Clinical Skills OSCE examination will be expecting you to approach with the standard Look, Feel, Move approach which you'll be already familiar with
People often find the Clinical Skills OSCE to be daunting and the Hand examination even more so, as it is quite an engaged OSCE station. However, as with everything at medical school, repetition is going to be key in understanding how you are assessing the patient, positioning your hands, and manipulating the patient.
Please note the hand examination also includes the special tests Tinel's Test and Phalen's Test to examine for carpal tunnel syndrome, which can be worsened in pregnancy, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
During the Hand examination, the wrist is also assessed, as you should always examine the joint above and the below the joint are focusing your initial assessment on

Please note that there is no ABSOLUTE way to perform a clinical examination. Different institutions and even clinicians will have differing degrees of variations - the aim is the effectively identify medically relevant signs.
However during OSCE assessments. Different medical schools, nursing colleges, and other health professional courses will have their own preferred approach to a clinical assessment - you should concentrate on THEIR marks schemes for your assessments.
The examination demonstrated here is derived from Macleods Clinical Examination - a recognized standard textbook for clinical skills.

I failed the "flex your thumb" test seen at 4:30. Nine days later I had surgery to reattach a severed tendon. I now use scissors to open plastic packaging (not a knife). I needed 9 months of hand exercises to regain all my thumb's function (it works perfectly fine today.)
There was a certain level of disbelief and fear in mind when I was commanding my thumb to move but nothing was happening. So, please use scissors and be safe.

@@kapibara2175 I bought a replacement kick-stand for my son's bicycle and it came in one of those plastic cards. They are impossible to tear open and as luck had it that day, my son (aged 16) had a pocket knife. He handed the knife to me and I proceeded to try to cut open the packaging. I held the knife in my right hand and the packaging in my left hand. Anyway, I stabbed myself between my left thumb joint and my hand, in the only spot I should not have stabbed myself. There was no blood, no big cut, just a little tiny cut that healed very quickly, but by then the damage was done - I had cut my nerve and tendon.

An actual clinical question - is the purpose of the repetition of the first set of hand and finger movements so that it can be observed both supported (either by the pillow or by you) and then under the patient's own support?

I need this lol. 3 months ago I got bit by my dog.(my fault) and really dod a number on my right hand. Tendon damage and nerve damage. Took 16 stitches. They had to be in for over 2 weeks due to a bad infection.
I had something similar to this done when I couldn’t hold a fork. Turns out I had compressed a couple discs in my back. Luckily easily fixed with some physio
It’s surprising how central issues can cause such peripheral effects

As long as they have attitude towards full professionalism, which I admire the most, and not being douchebags from communist times, they are aour angels here on earth. Highest respect for that profession from me, every branch of doctors out there.

This should be an interesting view. I probably got neuropathy from the chemotherapy drugs. It seems generally that there is not that much good information videos on neuropathy on CZcams. Perhaps something you could touch on if it's within your feild of expertise.

I am from Greece and the question I want to ask is my sister is an MS patient and she is being treated in Greece, but there is no question of any kind of recovery, I wonder if we can find a solution abroad?
Unfortunately I’m not able to legally answer questions about specific advice. I would recommend being guided by her team
There is no treatment ("recovery") for MS neither in the UK or the rest of Europe. Only medicine slowing down the progress of MS.

I've just started my treatment with antidepressants and antipsychotics, and things aren't going very well.
Unfortunately these medications take time to work. I hope things improve for you soon.

When you were performing a visual inspection of her hands at the beginning of the video, could you please provide an example of something you are looking for? Maybe swelling? Discoloration? If so, what would be the potential cause?

Im having problems with my middlefingers for a Bit over a year now, i can't bend them fully into my palm. When i open my hands they stay stuck in a 90 degree angle. Once i woke up and my left middlefinger was completely stuck to my palm so I had to force back into its normal position while my hand was under warm water. What could be the problem? So far the doctors I went to, here in Germany, told me to submerge my hands under warm water and stretch them but that just helps momentarily. I haven't visited a chiropractor setzt because getting an appointment is quite difficult. Could you maybe give any kind of advice to what it could be and whats best to do in my Situation? Thank you in advance for any sort of response.
I’m not able to legally give specific advice. I can only suggest seeing your doctor.
Personally I do not recommend chiropractors, but readily refer to physiotherapists
