- It's a shame I couldn't find that beautiful song performed by Jerry Douglas and sang by Maura O'Connell. So I just needed to add it to the huge CZcams world.
If you find any mistakes in the lyrics I added here, please let me know, I couldn't find the right lyrics of the song as well in the web :-(
On the wrong side of midnight, one last toast to ties that bind
Drifters and dreamers hide behind faces stained with time
Saved by the sound of a closing door
Here they can win without fighting the war
It's a beautiful life
This fallen angel's gonna be alright
Hang onto heaven with all my might
It's beautiful life
It's a certain kind of empty, a special kind of burn inside
Comes from the lonely. Well if for you only then run and hide
Led by emotion that carries you still
Desperate for pleasure you still need the thrill
refrain
It's rainin' when you get there, rainin' and it took so long
Mile after miserable mile, he's already gone
Hopeless and helpless and caught in the storm
There's no one to turn to but the world keeps on
refrain
It's a beautiful life
Hang onto heaven with all my might
This fallen angel's gonna be alright
It's beautiful life
Love this song. I was in some country store off the Blueridge Parkway and they were playing it and had the DVD for sale and I bought it. I've been listening to this song for I'd guess 25 years.
RIP to John Davis who opened his "Heartfelt Music" show with this great song. We'll all miss you John. You introduced us all to the wonderful world of folk and acoustic music for well-nigh 50 years.
I first heard this song soon after my son was born, in 1992 on KPIG Radio out of Freedom, California.
Loved it instantly and have it on several "saved" lists.
(Would like it played at my wake when the time comes.)
I, like other commenters here, have never found the published lyrics, but I think Lucarius did a pretty good job of writing them down, as heard.
Maura O'Connell's voice and style were just the right combination with the arrangement to carry this one all the way. It never got a lot of play on the mainstream radio stations, but KPIG really did it justice.
Well done, Lucarius.
John Davis passed away about 4 moths ago. This was his opening and closing theme song for his long-running radio show Folk Music with John Davis and later Heartfelt Music The show ran on KPFK FM and once the internet was introduced the show had a worldwide following. So Long, John. RIP
I'm sorry to hear of John Davis's passing--Heartfelt Music was a must-listen show for me back when I lived in Southern California.
Still the the theme song for John and Deanne Davis' Folk Music programme, "Heartfelt Music" heard on KPFK's "Roots Music and Beyond" every time there is a fifth Saturday in a month--about 4 or 5 times a year. Wonderful show along with the alternating hosts heard every Saturday morn from 6-8. You can also catch it later in the week at a more convenient hour via their Audio Archives link. Heard worldwide via the web or KPFK 90.7 FM. Enjoy.
Beautiful! I think I originally heard a male country singer singing it years ago....?
I love this song--I first encountered it about 15 years ago when it was the theme song for a show on KPFK radio in Los Angeles called "Heartfelt Music"
beautiful song
I really start to love that song...
A rather obscure, but excellent song. I first heard this on KPFA Berkeley, and was able to purchase a tape recording of it on a Jerry Douglas album, 20 years ago, when it was first released. Very difficult to locate even then. Thank you for sharing this with the world. Have no idea if Maura O'Connell recorded this independently or not (?)
Thanks for the lyrics!!
Thanks for that link. Much appreciated
Where are you from? I live in Germany.
@Adjunkt
I can't promise that they are 100% correct, as I just wrote down what I heard and I'm no native English speaker.
Thanks for posting the lyrics. Anyone know the chords? Can't find anywhere.
I put it with chords on supermusic.sk/skupina.php?idpiesne=670932&action=piesen
Thanks Lucarius
Just found this and it's still there! Thank you!
Do you have any idea what chord it goes to after the "C" on "stained with time". I think It goes "G" but am not sure how it then gets to the "D" for the refrain. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
@Jestak
I encountered it much, much later, but I'm a quite young Jerry fan anyway... My first album I ever got was Glide, which was around the time, when I came to his music...
