My husband was never a Duran Duran fan until I took him to one of their concerts. Maybe 16-18 years ago-the tour with all original members, including Andy Taylor. Anyway, he walked away saying how that concert changed his tune about them as a band and how they were serious legit musicians. He said it was one of the best concerts he had been to. And he has been to probably 500+ concerts.

I watched the Rob Squad vids for a long time and never commented and questions were asked about years of release and at what point in an artist's career a particular song was released, etc. Sometimes they guessed correctly but sometimes they didn't. So, since I do have access to the stats, lately I've been adding some context to when the record was released, how high it charted and the level of career the artist attained. Maybe it was after they did "Afternoon Delight," when Jay said they needed to dig deeper into Starland Vocal Band hits that I thought maybe I could provide some assistance. Not trying to be a Mr.-Know-It-All A-hole, just a source of info.

Nice information. Just to be accurate you are referring to the US charts since CZcams's audience has no boundaries. In the UK Duran Duran had 33 charted singles. In the U.S., Duran Duran actually had 21 charted singles and not 22. Their last Billboard Hot 100 single to chart was in 2004 with (Reach Up For The) Sunrise at #89. To be on the success side of songs and the Billboard charts, a band wants to at least hit the Top 40. Duran Duran had 14 Top 40 tracks in the US. Their last Top 40 US release was Come Undone in 1993, which peaked at #7. Honorable mention would have been the following release, Too Much Information, which peaked at #45 also released in 1993.
Duran Duran broke in the United States on the release of Hungry Like The Wolf, which radio stations refused to play during the first two attempts of the songs release. Nothing new since that was the take on Duran Duran's debut album in the US. Duran Duran was more of a college radio and dance club band with a fringe audience at the beginning in America (1981). HLTW was released three separate times in the US before reaching #3 in 1983.
What helped Duran Duran in the radio market was David Kerschenbaum remixing songs made for the Carnival EP released in September of 1982. The RIO album was released in the US in May of 1982 along with HLTW. Capitol Records, (EMI Records subsidiary) the American label responsible for DD in the US, re-released the Rio album in November 1982. The US re-release of RIO added many of the remixed Kerschenbaum tracks. Kerschenbaum emphasized the remixes with more guitar and brought the rhythm section more so to the forefront to make the tracks more dance-able, this caught on with radio making HLTW more attractive to radio programmers.
Before Duran Duran caught on to Top 40 radio in the US, you could hear them on college radio and especially on New Wave Music radio stations such as WLIR (Long Island), KROQ (Los Angeles) and KYYX (Seattle).
Duran Duran nearly had three consecutive #1 songs in the US. The first #1 was The Reflex in the summer of 1984 and the second #1 (and the first James Bond track ever to reach #1) was A View To A Kill. However, in between these two tracks was The Wild Boys which peaked at #2. The track entered the #2 position behind Daryl Hall & John Oates #1 single, Out Of Touch in December 1984. The Wild Boys was then leapfrogged by Madonna's Like A Virgin which remained the #1 song for six consecutive weeks. The Wild Boys kept its #2 slot behind Like A Virgin for three more weeks before falling to #3. That's a total of 4 weeks at #2 behind two artists. Any other week, The Wild Boys would have been a #1 single.
Nile Rodgers helped Duran Duran get to the #2 position by producing The Wild Boys. He also kept Duran Duran from the #1 position by producing Madonna's Like A Virgin.

But in that sense that every object in the universe has some resonant frequency, Duran Duran has somehow managed to tap into mine from day one. More accurate to say that they're the best band for me to listen to. It's almost as if they were Taylor-made to suit my tastes.

Ilean was a charter yacht and had done many photo shoots in the 1970s and 80s. In the early 2000's she was spotted in an English harbor in serious disrepair. Beat down and forgotten, she was doomed for the junkyard. The owner of Panera watch company saw her and recognized her from this video. He bought Ilean and spent 4 years having her restored. In 2009 Ilean was entered in the Antigua Regatta yacht race. Some members of Duran Duran were in attendance as Ilean finished the race in all her original glory. This is Duran Duran's huge hit and album! This is where the movie producers got involved with music videos and put some serious money into these videos (they realized how much they helped artists compared to radio play alone). With Duran Duran with a more glam rock and over-the-top style, I think this video worked great and really takes the audience on a journey from the Ordinary - no doubt! This is about 1982 and Duran Duran is still going strong and are getting inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame this year - totally deserved! Enjoy!
