  • The 2020 BMW M135i and Volkswagen Golf R are two of the desirable hot hatches on sale. But which one is better? Dan Prosser tests the cars back-to-back in order to find out. Can the four-cylinder, four-wheel-drive BMW topple the four-cylinder, four-wheel-drive VW from its place at the top of the class?

I'll stick with my 7R, the BMW has a face only a mother could love. I also feel like the golf's chassis is more neutral than you are portraying it, I find mine certainly prefers understeer to oversteer at the limit but if you are precise with your inputs it settles on the edge between the two beautifully. Also the manuals benefit greatly from a shifter and shift bracket/ bushing, upper and lower dogbone insert, and a clutch delay valve and helper spring delete.

After 5 years of probably using the Golf R as a benchmark for their development programme of their next New Hot Hatch I would have hoped BMW could have done much better than only just about superseded the GolfR mk7.5. All newer cars are weaker (unless the manufacturer tuned them up to compensate) and quieter than in 2018 because of the now mandatory opf/ppf filters. 2018 (and older) models of sporty cars will most likely keep their value better because of this.

The problem with these VW competitors is that it is barely just as fast as the current Golf R. BMW and Mercedes competitors are actually heavier than the current Golf R. Being just as good as the bench standard just won't be enough if a new R is right around the corner in a 2 years time. It won't be too hard pressed to say that the new R will either be lighter than 3400 lbs or more powerful than 300 hp or both.

I'm not a Brand-fan! Even though the BMW maybe more fun to drive I place BIG emphasis on "Visibility" because the reason for buying a small car is to be able position it easily, i.e. park it easily and no other hatch that I've owned or test driven has better rear-3/4 visibility than the Golf making reverse parking a breeze. The only car which comes close is the Audi A3 series for visibility and park-ability however because one sits a little HIGHER in the Golf....the Golf is still the easier car to position. If an after market tuner can crack the software and have more torque pushed to the rear axle of the Golf R it will prove just as dynamic and playful around corners.

It's a fwd platform now mate. They changed it for this latest model. So you get a bigger boot and more rear leg room.

Meh, the old M135i and M140i are more fun than any Golf R too. Quicker too, when you're not in the damp UK with traction issues. Golf R is a great unit, BMW just give a little more for the 'driver'. What a great class this is now, we're spoilt.

Having owned the previous M135i I’m happy I ticked that straight 6 RWD hot hatch box when I did. The new ones proportions make it look like a crossover but understand why they went with fwd for the vanilla models - rear legroom was a joke and people just bought in to the brand and didn’t care / know it was RWD.
Personally i would wait for the new Golf R rather than this M135i...it’s just so ugly

@@poddyea2k9 ive driven both, i owned a scirocco R and am partial towards DSG boxes and you will not choose the Golf unless it's financially MUCH cheaper. Interior of the BMW is out of its league. Not even close. Driving fast corners is chalk and cheese. The beemer feels neutral and light, you can go too fast into a corner and even feel like you can make the rear come around with a bit of lift off oversteer. The golf is understeer and that is all.
I would say the golf can only win by price and nose design. thats about it. I would still prefer the DSG on principal to the Aisin, even the ZF but difference here is not that great. The Aisin box gives that good old fashion shove on upshifts.

To say it lasted so long as top dog is testament to how good the R is, but given the BMW is new out, it should really have done better than just about knocking the R off its perch... must be an M140 coming because otherwise the M135 will be left for dead almost straight after its released with the Mk8 R just around the corner...? Well, thats so long as VW dont stuff up the mk8 of course!!!!
