  • While on my lunch break at work I decided to go and take some photos inside Carlisle Cathedral.
Carlisle Cathedral is so impressive inside with a beautifully painted roof and one of the largest stained glass windows in Europe so I really wanted to capture how impressive this building is in a photograph.
Unfortunately inside the Cathedral is very dark and tripods are obviously not allowed so it was quite a challenge getting the exposure right while also avoiding camera shake.
In this video I discuss some different options for taking photos in places where tripods are not allowed.

I'm 58 and started photography when I was 13yrs old. I ran a professional studio for awhile and I believe the only time I used tripods was when in the studio.
I never got afraid to lay down in the floor, climb on seats, trees or walls. Using macros, telephotos, etc. With the digital era and advanced electronics, all you need is your creativity, persistence and love for the kraft.
You are on the right path... keep up with a good work.

Claudio Elias Thanks. The point of a tripod is to get sharp images without camera shake though. Climbing a tree isn't going to stop camera shake

Of course, I do see the point, and even further you will not be able to time lapse, or long apertures (low ISO) without a tripod. What I meant was you already take great pictures with barehanded.

Nice real life video. I loved how you left in the video of when people were walking past you on the bench. That is so typical of a vlogger’s life. I actually think that many people are secretly jealous or admire people who develop the self-confidence to vlog in public like you. Keep up the good work.

yvrphotoderm Thanks. I don't know if I quite have that self confidence yet, I still find it very uncomfortable in public but I'm trying to push myself to get more used to it.

Hi Chris, I've been away for a month and not had chance to comment, sorry.
not trying to teach you to suck eggs, but ........ how about an "L" bracket and quick release plate to allow you to use portrait
I use this with my Manfrotto mini tripod, works a treat, easy to change from landscape to portrait without moving tripod.
You probably stock items in your store. Good luck.

Get yourself over to York Minster Chris. You can use a tripod!

Did you ask if you could use tripod I have always had a yes when I ask got some great pics in Hexham abbey and churches in Newcastle upon Tyne are ok with it it’s flashes they don’t like think it will destroy things

Michael wilson Really? No I didn't ask. It's such a narrow corridor where I'd need to set up though. I may ask sometime when it's quiet then.

Chris Gouge yea always had a yes it’s ok just if people need to move you get out of the way Hexham abbey is really dark inside and really wanted a pic of the night stairs in there there are burn marks on the stairs where William Wallace burned down the roof google a pic of the stairs there is window above and off to the side so tricky to get without shooting brackets

I made do with a small sand bag for low shots it's not going to be totally balanced but it can be rotated later. It's what snipers use very functional and quick.

The 'via pulchritudinis,' the way of beauty, yes! has been used by the Catholic and Eastern Churches since the beginning because the Truth, the Good, and the Beautiful are all the essences for God.
