Junkyard Digs sold me ANOTHER Race Car! But this one WORKS!

- Many moons ago Kevin of Junkyard Digs sold us a bit of a basket case, a Ford Capri race car that was in bad need of some attention. Over the last several years we have run into snag after snag keeping us from getting it running on the Lucore Automotive channel. Well when he told me he had ANOTHER race car I should buy, I was a bit skeptical until I saw exactly what he had.
With several 24 Hours of Lemons races already under it's belt, and a rather impressive collection of Automotive CZcams personalities already having experienced this car behind the wheel, including recently Donut Media Nolan, and Isaac of Cars and Cameras, I had to say yes, and figure out a way to get this Ford Pinto Race Car home with me. Fortunately this one is a considerably more complete car, and with a "few small fixes" should be ready to hit the track soon! Road racing Automotive Adventures With Austin coming soon!
As someone who watches Lucore & has raced Lemons for about 10 years now - I approve this is the best worst decision ever. my learnings from racing an old BMW for many years:
1. looking at that car it's a great start!
2. get a better seat, one that you fit in properly. spend real money on your own safety stuff - I am heavy & use a Schroth Flexi as my head and neck system. a Bell M8 helment & get shoes that don't crowd your feet, gloves that have a bright color so when you signal a point by they can see your hand. figure out a cool shirt setup for summer. figure out a mirror or camera system.
3. car prep: run the exhaust all the way back. 2hrs breathing fumes will make you sick and 2hrs in a loud car will make your head hurt. heat shielding/dynamat on the trans tunnel will help keep some heat out of the interior.
4. wheel bearings, fluids, brake caliper seals, any rubber lines, etc as basic prep.
5. lemons has a race at Road America in September, might be a good time? have fun!

These guys are 'drag/street racers'. Drag racing is all over in 10 seconds. Try doing 30 laps in a dragster?

I had 79 Pinto with Offenhauser intake with one header. Was FUN 😂
There's a reasonably decent chance an upgraded intake may find it's way onto this thing in the future. We'll see! Have a feeling it's going to be a ton of fun as is!
You also have Summit Point, the only road race track in West Virginia. I raced my Corvair there several times.

I blew a head gasket in my 92 Toyota 4x4 3.0 in Idaho one year . I had to rent a U-haul moving van and trailer . Looks like a fun little racecar lol …. Freakin pinto 🤣
I can't WAIT to do the book keeping on this adventure, it's going to be HILARIOUSLY in the red without a doubt, but should kick open the door to a whole lot of fun!
Not too long ago, I saw a guy flat towing 3 cars behind him down I25. I didn't know that could be done until then. Something to think about. Each car behind his truck, was flat towing the other.

Had a good idea Kevin was involved but figured he had a pontiac of some sort we all didn't know about. Was not expecting a pinto however after owning a few they are a hoot to abuse.
I thought he was buying that purple car. I forgot all about the LeMon’s car
I’ve had several Pintos. A set of good tires and they handle great. I had 205/50/15’s on a sedan model. Very low center of gravity and wide track width for it’s size is a plus. Only real negative is they are front heavy.
The tires ON this thing are 255/40/17s so I'm going to guess grip is going to be somewhere near INSANE! Got a few things to address on it to get it ready for shake down but it'll be on track soon! I hear good things about this crazy little things on track :)
This makes perfect sense for your situation, There is no simpler car to work on than this. These are one of my favorites for a fun car!
That's exactly what I'm thinking, dead simple, parts are readily available, and CHEAP! I can skip a bunch of steps and go straight to racing ASAP.... once a few things are fixed :)

There are a ton of Esslinger engineering for this engine and they are mainly bolt on parts. Thanks BigAl California.

That old 2.3L sounds wicked. And they sell alot of race parts for it. Including turbo kits. At least they used too.
That’s a great purchase as you stated. Most of the work is done for you. Me being a drag racing guy and have never done any road or circle track stuff, would convert that to a drag car. Look forward to seeing what you do with it.

That car used to race in Rockford, IL.. how junk yard digs got it. It used to be one of the top cars in its division in Rockford speedway.. back in mid 90's

And I hope I'm one of the friends that gets to enjoy what you're going to do from the time you started and for the future. It is so cool
those engines were in so many racecars in the uk until not too long ago europe too but in not quite such high numbers . you would be amazed at the power some people can get from them.first thing i'd do is get me some webbers even if all it does is make it look cooler.

CALLED IT! BTW Pinto Wagons exist.. and I kind of want one.. not as bad as I want a ~67 Vista Cruiser but... (sad part I've wanted one since I was in the single digits) I'm telling you just buy a F250 from them and tow the trailer back.. problem solved. For my money if I was going to go racing, I'd buy a Mini S Cooper, yank the interior, put a cage in it, put good shocks on it, put good rubber on it and go racing.. but then I'm 6'10 so I need something that actually has room in it.

Not going to lie I was realllllllly tempted to try to drive one into the back of a box truck and tow the other on a trailer behind it. Would have been HILARIOUS, also could have likely gotten me into a whole lot of trouble doing it on video ;)

When I saw the original Digs episode I was how did Pinto race car conversion did not become a modified? Or at least made to look like one.. I’ve seen them used as figure eights car.

Why not rent a 3/4 or 1 ton truck from Enterprise. 🤷♂️ Most larger rental offices have them available. Definitely better fuel mileage and speed than a U-haul box truck and last I knew they were around $1 per mile.

We car guys are passionate, especially Corvette guys. I'm not necessarily a Vette guy but a fan of the big 3 making big power production vehicles that really shouldn't exist. I love the story and progression of America's sports car and most of all the fact that GM eclipsed Mopar in almost every way and done it with style and class in my opinion. I barely finished the video I was so livid and realized I better comment another day!!¡! So again why would you make such a video..... you're smart enough to know 90% plus of people would be strangely offended and you might loose fans and subs. I watch you're stuff solely because of O.M.G, S.R.C. and G.2 G. Wish you hadn't uploaded that one Big A (pun intended?!?!)

Okay here you go I can't believe that I've got to tell you all how to do this okay they're little cars they're not a full size car rent a damn U-Haul truck put the parts car either on a trailer and put the the car your mind that you're going to drive in the truck it will fit in one of the U-Haul box trucks we used to do this shit all the time rent a U-Haul box truck rent a U-Haul trailer put one car on the trailer but one car in the truck driving back to Columbus forever drop them off and you're done done one trip
