- Hey all. In this video I run you through how I create my Djent tones on the Line 6 HX Stomp. It's an absolute powerhouse of a unit when utilized efficiently, and hopefully a few tips in this video shall aid you in building your own massive djent tone patches! If you have any more tutorial requests, feel free to fire them down in the comments, and I'll see what I can do for you! :)
The tone you're seeing in this video is the exact patch I used for the following videos:

Concise and to the point! Thanks, Tim!
Cheers 👍
Great quality, straight to the point, great tips.. oh and the mandolin made me chuckle lol. Superb like always! Looks like I might have to pick up a stomp myself.
Cheers dude! They're actually really good units for the price. I recommended these to people before I even owned one myself haha
This video made me wish HX Stomp. Bought it. And almost instantly got desired tone. Wow! And actually -10dB of noise floor without gate comparing to my lower class audio interface. Cool! Thanks! : )
They're fantastic wee units! Does exactly what I need 🤘
Great video you reminded me of what I used to do on my POD HD500 that seemed to be mixing on my Helix tones, the Bias trick is such a useful way to get that cold extreme sound
This is so helpful 😍
Glad I can help man ✌️
Your technical knowledge is amazing and you have beautiful eyes hahaha
Haha cheers dude! ✌️
Oh shit, your videos are perfect!
Thanks for your work 😁✌🏼🤘
Cheers man! 🤘
@@LivingTimmy Could you maybe do a patch from scratch video for a high gain/metal/djent live tone?
Really curious about that especially about the EQ moves!
I can definitely see what I can do there 👍
@@LivingTimmy Thanks alot!
I've just posted a video where I make a Metal/Djent tone completely from scratch: czcams.com/video/Vg5Hbv4OkSY/video.html&ab_channel=TimMurray
Hope that helps out man! 🤘
RG8 sounds MAAAASSSIIIIVE
For what it's worth, it sounds pretty good eh! 👍
if you put fishmans tosin abasis on rg8 it sounds massive yeah , before that low end just sounds muddy as fuck
I want a dark ambient review of the helix using that baritone squirt again 👍👍👍
I can definitely cook up some ambient with the HX Stomp/Jazzmaster Baritone ✌️
Awesome tones in this video. could you please do one showing us how to get a good Meshuggah tone like from their latest album?
Nice ! As you are using VST pitch shifting.... A video comparison of all pitch whammy VST modules to extreme settings for low tuning (-6, -7 semi tones) could be Interesting (Guitar Rig, Line 6, Bias FX, Manipulator, Quadravox etc...). Latency, Attack, Chords, Muddiness... Lots of thing to consider :P
That's a fantastic idea! I'll see what I can do, seeing as I have 4-5 ways to pitch shift already haha ✌️
@@LivingTimmy Very nice !
I have tested a lots of things from Guitar Multi FX type of plugins (I wonder if the upcoming Amplitube 5 will have nice pitch shifter), some free VST or paid one (Zplane...), and some unusual things with pitch shifters module with more or less sucess (Physion etc... Quadravox was surprisingly correct).
The ref in non real time is ReaPitch with Elastique 3 Pro algorithm but latency is way too high for mive play so it is just for comparaison.
I guess common extreme shifts would be from drop D (easily accesible with standard guitar) to B or A (7 strings range), and drop A to low E (like a low 8 strings).
You will be able to test with real baritone instrument (Jazzmaster) so this can be very intersting !
I keep building my board up then just wanting to go back to my stomp again. Lol
I love other pedals but the stomp just sounds so good.
I’m curious how you use it with your other pedals, any vids on that?
I haven't got a video that utilizes all pedals on my pedalboard just yet, though I do mix it up in a few videos. The big use of the HX Stomp for me is actually as a routing hub/FX unit for my whole board. For example, I've got my Darkglass ADAM and Darkglass X Ultra in the FX Loop of the HX, a Horizon Devices Nano Attack and Darkglass Hyper Luminal Compressor before the HX, and a Horizon Devices Flux Echo after the HX. So, if I'm using the Darkglass ADAM as my "amp sim", I can move where it is in the signal chain on the HX, and also apply any of the HX effects before or after it. The idea is that I'll have dedicated pedals that I think sound amazing/better than the HX for each application (eg Nano Attack is my favourite boost), so its only adding to the already fantastic capabilities of the HX Stomp. If I want to use an effect that none of my other pedals do (modulation and pitch shifting for example), I just use the HX stomp effects. I'll have to try do a full video of just messing with my pedals to show off what it can really do! 🤘 Hopefully that helps a bit haha
Do you think this correlates to the line 6 pod as well?
I mean if you don't test the tone on the mandolin, you are not a professional djentleman
Haha I'll have to do a "baritone mandolin djent" video sometime in the future 😂
@Fletcher Jadiel stfu bots...
@Hank Augustus does anybody fall for this shit?
Been getting them a fair bit recently eh. Going to add their app name to my spam comment filter now haha
Would love to see your review on the new diezel vh4 amps and the horizon drive / gate with the newest update that came out.
Would be good to try do a few more gear reviews/demos in the future! I've got a playthrough of an amp sim in the works currently, should be out shortly, then I've got a bass related gear review after that 🤘
@@LivingTimmy busy busy busy. always good to be busy though. Would be cool to do a comparison between the real precision drive and the stomp version. That stuff always does good view counts
Would have been fantastic if they had added the Flux echo as an emulation as well, as I've got one on the way, so would have done a comparison there. Definitely going to do videos on the update though as it not only adds some good Amps/Drives, but now I have some new pitch controls to play with haha.
will this work on the pod go ?
Probably a stupid question, but can you just connect your HX Stomp to your studio speakers? Does it have speaker sims (IR's)?
Yep! Has stereo outs and also a headphone out. You can run the HX directly to PA with speaker IRs on it, and you can even use the unit as an audio interface too
Is the action on your guitars super low? Like to the point of having intended fret buzz? The way the rg8 and the jazzmaster sound is how I want my 8 string with blackouts and 9 string with emg 909s to sound. Ive heard other people get the tone I want with my pickups but I just can get it. The only thing I'm not doing is I'm using a real cab. Only a 1x12 with a v30. I pick hard, I've used heavy gauges, lighter gauges. Nothing is doing it. Amp is a joyo zombie, but I currently just use the fx loop to either power my mooer brown sound 3 (evh 5153) or my pod hd500x that I usually use the treadplate(dual rec) but I've tried all the amps on the pod. Boosting with a precision drive as well.
The only other thing besides getting a 2x12 or 4x12 would be my cables? I don't even know where I got them from I know there instrument cables.
Sorry it's a long post. Just trying to give you as much info as possible.
My action is usually set pretty low, but I still avoid fret buzz. Sometimes if I pick really hard a tiny bit of buzz can come through. Something I'd suggest would be use a single coil mode if your pickups allow it. It seems strange but it's become quite a big part of my extended range tone. The Jazzmaster is single coil, RG8 is Humbucking but it's quite bright sounding. Something you could also try mess with would be to EQ before the amp as to shape your guitars direct signal. Can cause some pretty interesting results!
@@LivingTimmy I've been tweaking for a few years on and off. I don't get to play too often bc I have kids. I just dont know if I should blame the blackout pickups, or instrument cables. I'm lost. I just keep tinkering.
@@AaronMorgan666 Same thing man, i just cant get that tone. Last thing i'm gonna try is using single coils, if that wont help, i give up
@@Bortmechanik2236 the only thing that helped me get it was using headphones and obviously turning cab sims on my pod hd500x. So maybe if I get a frfr speaker it'll work. But yea I have no idea how to get that tone with all real gear.
But since he is recording direct that might be it as well. I have no idea how to explain it.
@@Bortmechanik2236 sweet pretty much what I got. Same specs. Both my 8 and 9 are agile. The 9 is 30 inch scale. The 8 is 28.6 inch scale. But made on the same factory by the same people.
Can you get these same IR's and tones using a pod go?
The stock tones for "metal" are weak for prog and dJentin
I haven't had any experience with the POD Go first hand, but the ML Sound Lab IRs I use in this should help out a lot. As much as the Helix units have some useable IRs that aren't bad, I recall not being a fan of the IRs on the POD HD500 I used to own. IR's helped out a fair bit, though it didn't have a proper loader like the new units.
@@LivingTimmy for sure bro. The HD500 always had that really thin tone without a lot of depth. I actually loaded some third party IR's and this pod go slaps now. I appreciate the video. Your the goat!
HOW ABOUT ABOUT SONG, MURRAY!?
Can you recommend a pair of headphones that work well for mixing? My headphones make my amp sims sound like shit...
Depends what your budget is really. If you want a flat frequency response, go with open back. If you want sound isolation, go closed back. I personally use Beyerdynamic DT 1990 Pros, which are open back. They are fantastic, but the price tag is up there. They do have the cheaper 990s that might be good (haven't tried them though). The 1770 and 770 range is closed back ✌️
Post this on the djent and djent shitposting facebook groups
Definitely need to get into more FB groups. I'm in shitposting and the Djent subreddit, but that's about it at the moment haha
