I’ve learned so much from you over this past year while trying to keep my mind and body active after being wounded in combat, the results of an explosion in Afghanistan. I have learned everything from setting wings to prepping and dying my own materials, and more importantly the need to remain patient, having the determination required to continue improving, and the importance of doing it correctly and going back if I’m not happy with what I see sitting on the shank. I mean this when I say it, “thank you for what you do”, as I know it requires a large investment in both time and money to make these videos, and I hope to see many more in years to come. Continue being an inspiration and teacher for those of us that enjoy the challenge of lashing thread, fur, feathers and more to pointy steel!

Mr. Hulsey, thank you for your service. I couldn’t tell what country you are in, but if you are in the US, you might be interested in checking out The Wounded Warrior Project’s Healing Waters program. It offers fly fishing & fly tying for veterans who have been wounded or otherwise injured during their service. I donate flies to a local chapter, & their meetings are warm, welcoming & fun. There are chapters all across the US. I don’t know if there similar groups in the UK or other countries, but you might find it worth looking.

I just had to look up the blue bottle fly to see the insect on which the pattern is based. Mistake. This fishing fly is so much more attractive than the actual insect. Thank you for sharing.

Fairly simple materials and fairly simple technique. I feel more than capable with this one.

Great fly , I tie these with tinsel, biots , and coats and Clark thread spun to make it look like a rope for perfect segmentation if that’s what you looking for . I seems all version work great either dead drifted or swung . I really don’t understand why the blue color is so effective but it is .
    Love your videos

Used this pattern a lot in my younger years for loch trout it was very effective. Didn't have the peacock herl head though , thinking it would be nice with magpie herl .
Have seen it tied on wee doubles as a sea trout fly .

Great fly Davie. I’ve noticed that you quite often nudge the hanging thread forwards (towards the hook eye) when you are winding the hackle around the shank, rather than having the thread already poisoned forward ready to tie off the hackle when it is wound on. In other words are you winding your hackle over loose thread? Sorry for not being able to explain this better. Keep up the amazing work. Cheers

Can you tie a traditional mallard and claret? I keep seeing different ways to tie it but can't find a good reference for how the original pattern is tied
