Ok so basically ghists spawn on caveman corpses that naturally appear, like the one at the bottom of the lake, but you can only see them while cursed. Cameras kill them, so taking a picture of the corpse kills the ghist.

Ghists can sometimes spawn when killing a helping hand man,but you can only see ghists while cursed. Taking a picture of any ghist will kill it and put it in your book if it isn’t there already.
It can be done by placing the 5-1 curse pot with Waddler, then in 7-1 use regenerating blocks to curse yourself, you can go to the eggplant world the normal way and in the ghist shop he has I believe a plasma cannon, a clone gun, and something else
I saw some streamer see a ghist when they were cursed and killed a hired hand so I think that they spawn whenever you kill a hired hand but you can only see them when you are cursed. You get the journal entry because you killed the invisible ghist with the camera
I got the Ghist yesterday, but it wasnt like that. I was just doing a run where I had the camera most of the time, and using it to zap the heck outta things. Got into the Tide pools, and just in some random part of the stage, I"m hitting things with the flash, and.... Ghist journal entry. Confused the heck outta me.
Ghist appears on cavemen that spawned in already dead I think. If you were cursed you would’ve seen the ghist, but since you weren’t, you killed it with the camera without even knowing it was there. At least, that’s my understanding of how it works
Sometimes there is a secret in 1-2 and there's a dead cannibal and ghist floating above him. Moving his body, moved the ghist. You can't take him to the normal layer though. I wonder what happens if you slice his body into nothing.
So there are secret caves that are shaped like a sideways cross with nothing but a dead caveman, maybe taking a picture of those cavemen would also give you the Ghist
I've seen some hidden corpse pockets on world 1 and 2 where the door is hidden on random areas behind walls with a dead caveman inside, maybe they also give Ghist journal entry if we use a camera.

@@cambac-pro I believe one of his gifts is always Kapala. You can, but it's not that good because you'd have to live for a while being cursed, and you'd have to sacrifice two pets to remove the curse anyways. At that point you'd have 1 hp + Kapala + 2 items, and if you didn't do this you'd have 4+ hp (if you don't take any damage, which is a fair comparison since if you were cursed you'd die in one hit) + Kapala. So the question is whether you value 2 random items enough to justify being an unknown number of levels cursed. Or maybe there's something I don't know about.
@@cambac-pro The real play is to also blow up (only) one of the altars then you get a free bomb bag at the next altar and the true crown after that giving you infinite bombs, but this play is so real that not even the realists of Spelunky go for Derek's straight shot to glory

I can confirm that to get the Ghist entry you can use the Camera on any Hired Hand. I coincidentally got a camera on one of my Black Market runs, and there's plenty of Hired Hands there, so I tried to take a picture of a dead one, and it works. But I really don't get what it's all about, is it a reference or something?
i got the shopkeeper in the samr way you got the 4-2 ghist, no curse required. i just went to the left side, went as close to the wall as possible, and flashed the camera through the wall. it went far enough to kill the shopkeep, 0 hassle at all
Being cursed allows for you tk see ghists. Sonetimes they spawn from dead NPCs. Idk if they agro, but theyre weak to cameras. I think thats a refence to some nintendo horror game (i forgot the name of it).
Do the ghosts that appear in the "Dead are Restless" events count as ghists? They can be seen when you're cursed and can be killed with the camera for coins. If you cant see them and want free coins I think they just roam around the graves.
I did the same, but i whipped the dead caveman and the angry shopkeeper theme started to play. Then I pulled a big brain Olmite move and teleported into a wall

You dont have to do it on any level “before” 1-4. You can become cursed on 1-4 itself as well

so you can technicaly steal, get all the good items, then remove curse and farm blood (one of his gifts can be kapala)

The ghist spawns from dead hired hands, and the camera kills ghists. Pretty simple logic

Ghist shopkeeper is a dead verison of the caveman shopkeeper. And any other ghist is a dead caveman.
