2022 has certainly been a year full of twists and turns. While projects based on breakthrough technologies like blockchain have gained traction across the financial industry, further signs have emerged of the risks associated with trading unregulated assets - most notably the steep decline in the value of a number of cryptocurrencies, and the recent collapse of the FTX exchange.
Nonetheless, the appetite for truly digital financial services has further gathered pace in regulated markets. Incumbents and fintechs alike have responded by evolving their approach to innovation and how they collaborate to solve industry-wide challenges. The momentum towards central bank digital currencies also became irresistible this year, with over 100 countries on the path to developing their own digital currencies. Here too, market players are keenly aware of the need for industry-wide collaboration to overcome the threat of fragmentation and connect up CBDCs at the global level.
So, watch this video as Dr Leda Glyptis, Chief Client Officer at 10x and Nick Kerigan, Swift’s Head of Innovation, look back at the year in financial innovation and discuss the successes, failures and lessons learned in 2022, as well as their predictions for 2023.
