- This 300 square foot zero waste tiny house was custom-built for a newly retired couple. It has a massive rooftop deck to create some extra outdoor living space, and it has a unique floor plan that includes a raised living room with a view, and two reverse lofts that eliminate the need for ladders.

Buddy and Barb are an inspiring waste-conscious couple with some impressive accomplishments. For nearly 20 years they ran the award-winning Gibson’s Recycling Depot where they worked to recycle and divert waste from the landfill, and in 2017 they also did the Bolt Across Canada road trip where they drove across the country in an electric vehicle while creating zero waste on the road. So it’s no surprise that their tiny house project incorporates zero waste principles like conserving resources and reducing waste.
The home is well insulated and it has triple glazed windows so it requires less energy to heat and cool, it has fixtures like a waterless urinal and a sink toilet combo to reduce water use, it has a built-in charging station for an electric car, and it has an indoor composting set up to reduce the amount of household waste they send to the landfill. They also used reclaimed materials throughout the house when they could.
The tiny house was built by Hummingbird Micro Homes

The comment section is extra grumpy on this one.

I admire their knees and bladder. I am younger but my knees and bladder would not be happy about that low bedroom, especially during night visit to bathroom. It works for them - so, kudos.
Beautiful tiny home. Unfortunately The bedroom would not work for me and the hubby. Claustrophobic and yeah knees too.
put the bed up a level and put storage where bed is .
problem solved
It wouldn't work for me either, I fell n broke my ankle, crack me foot bone and damaged my knee, so I am a total mess when it comes to my right foot, so I couldn't manage the lower bed area
Amen to that! No crawling into bed at 59! But I admire their purposeful living!
They can move their bed to the tv room , probably are thinking of that already lol 💛
"We're just trying. This is our latest example of trying." I love this mindset! Expecting perfection will only lead to disappointment, but giving up can only lead to no progress at all.
I love mostly everything about the this tiny home except the bedroom😩. Apart from its absolute a beautiful built🥰
I agree. I love to read in bed, and I wouldn't want to hang out in that area.
Too claustrophobic for me. It needs to be at least 5 or 6 ft so you can sit up and breathe. Too dangerous if you choke at night or something
@@fifi.871 l totally agree with you. All l kept thinking was that they look like they are laying in a double coffin!😯
I couldn't do it. Not at all! I would like to go tiny, but l'd rather do a regular loft if l couldn't have a main floor sleeping area. Kudos to them!
When I saw that bedroom I was like, 😲 “Awww hell naw!!!” Everything else was great.
@@fifi.871 You actually only need 3 feet to sit up, so add the mattress and just a little over 4 feet would be enough to sit up in bed... 5-6 would cover most people being able to stand and 7-8 would make it second floor...
We really liked this tiny house except for the low bedroom. I have a bad back and could not crawl under there. Thanks Danielle for sharing their story.❤
Crawling into that bed would make me feel like a dog. I am a very healthy, active 66 year old, but last year I had a health crisis and several surgeries ensued. I am back to normal now but if that were my house I would have had to live elsewhere for over a year and that's something all seniors should take into account when planning these retirement houses.
I love everything about this. Now it needs to be affordable for most people of two. 😃
The tiny house movement started out where you could do it cheaply. If memory serves, in the range of $10 to $15k. Then capitalism took over and the low end is $50k, so I don't see the point.
Love the little composter in the kitchen 😊❤
So beautiful and thoughtful ...I couldn't do the reverse loft ...LOL...
They are happy and that's the most important thing
I LOVE this. Thanks for your incredible leadership by example, Buddy and Barb.
Glad to hear Kent Rathman of Sun Country Highway getting a plug here. His tireless work to install electric car charging stations across North America deserves massive credit!
I danced on that dance floor! The commodore floor was known for the little bounce it gave you 😊interesting!

Lots of good ideas.
i was really impressed with the secret bedroom, i thought it would be stuffy but no. It has windows on the sides and that's amazing
This build has a number of great ideas. With a few tweaks, I could see this layout work for me. Both 'basements ' make great storage space. And (for me) the upper living room would make an ideal bedroom and office, keeping the lower living room as the gathering space and guest bed. My kitchen would be a bit different to meet my cooking needs, but the footprint is large enough to accommodate those changes. Love the triple glazed windows. Not typically seen in the US, but makes perfect energy-efficient sense. Although dimensions weren't mentioned, this appears wider than 8.5ft. If they had to move it, hiring transport would be necessary. All that said, being in Canada, this must've cost more than the average THOW. I'm guessing easily $180k. Storing the inspiration in my back pocket and looking south of that border for my future parking. Thank you for bringing this story. Look forward to many more!
The toilet flush is genius. That alone in every household in the world would solve any water shortage issues
It should be standard in new buildings, just like the safety electric switch
I love the sink on the back of the toilet.
@@roseburke3962 yeah that's what i was referring to, it's simple genius. Not sure why this isn't mandatory on all new bathroom renovations or new construction
I would have made the area where the stove / bar is into the bedroom. There comes a point in the aging process where you don’t want to crawl on your hands and knees to reach your bed.
Their sofa makes a bed so they can just switch places. The fact is they have 3 bed options. I agree the lower bedroom would probably be enjoyable to their grandkids...
True
You guys are amazing and I love that you want to help leave a better world for our children. We should all be like the 2 of you. Thank you for what you do for our earth 🌎 ❤
Barb's humility is a beautiful thing, but just throwing this out there as an interested observer: despite her words, it's easy to see that they are VERY SPECIAL people, far from average. They're clearly wonderful, insightful people. 🥰
Love the stove bar! And the roof is perfect
Sorry but I cannot imagine a senior citizen getting down to crawl on their hands and knees into a claustrophobic bedroom. It would however be perfect for a kids bedroom 👌. Very nice place overall, the rooftop deck is sensational 😍
This is great! Thank you! Zero-waste traveling with an EV. Can’t get much more impressive. 😃 Perhaps with young children would be one more step. Love the floor plan. Looks like they thought about everything. Really exceptional example! 🙏
Kudos to them! I always question how couples make such low roofs work in the bedroom when, ideally, you'd want at least a torso and a half of clearance between the bed and the ceiling.
Wow. I love everything about this and them!! Can they please come over to Ontario and help communities build a zero or low-waste tiny house village here? 🙂
The rooftop deck is very clever as well as the reversed loft
Beautiful video 👍. Love the proper stairs going to rooftop deck. Drawer fridge is wonderful. Should your knees start hurting you guys have other sleeping options. Very nice home. Buddy, you have a urinal!!! Thanks for sharing. Take care.
GREAT, JUST GREAT. I commend you both. My grandson will have to clean up a mess when we leave this planet.
The small bedroom is really radical!
Smart , but not for everyone...
That's awesome that he saved part of the Commodore dance floor! It was famous for its bouncy nature, so I'm wondering if that aspect carried over in any way to its new home. There's so much that I love about the overall design of the home (the hidden bar is genius) though personally I'm not sold on the bedroom set up or location. Ultimately they're happy with it, so that's all that matters.
I literally gasped with delight when the piece of the dancefloor was revealed!!
Great eco-ideas, great home! Thank you for your way of life
Up cycle, up cycle, up cycle. It will change the world. I saved an old school bus from sitting rotting away in a junk yard and it's now our home on wheels.
I love that makeshift wood stove/entertainment center. ❤️. Fabulous!
This is my favorite tiny house. Love the composting system.
I know. I just want to know the name of it so I can get one.
I think it was unnecessary to put it into house when they could just use outdoor natural composting. It's useful if you are staying in apartment.
You guy's are far from average. You are making a huge impact for mother Earth. I'm sure she's very grateful.
Everything is great. Beautiful setting. Jameson storage is brilliant.
Preserving the past and the future. Beautiful
So much to love in this. Such clever designs. Love the storage under the stairs. I would love to live in a tiny home community with my kids when they are grown up, though I doubt any of them would sign up for that.
So awesome!
So Impressive! I hope I might have an opportunity to live like this. Retirement today. Children tomorrow. But in 2-3 years, who knows?! This is one of the most impressive tiny home videos I have seen regarding they had a purpose, and they achieved it.
Beautiful home
Truly love your tiny home and the simplicity of your life!
Awesome people and tiny home!
You could have a Murphy bed in your living room beautiful home 💛
Great intentions, but not nearly enough water for fighting fires. They should not rely on that IBC tank in an emergency
So nice to watch videos like this. Ideas we’re getting from you are totally useful.
Some very cool design features. Quite well thought out!
Very nice. Lots of great ideas and concepts to include in any custom build.
Growing up in México most families live and survive in tiny house. Back then we did'nt called tiny house. I call it home. What else can you afford if you have a big familia. Only 3 plus mom&dad. Meet families with 12 kids. Not new for a lot of people in both sides of the border. Matamoros Tamaulipas & Brownsville Texas. Happy holidays
I have been watching y'all for quite a while and love your channel and esthetic.
Their house is lovely and their message even better!
This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing this!
I feel you are very special, and very much ahead of the times and also a thread that will impress the future for a long tome to come.
they really know what they want, the house's generally awesome, the hidden wine holder in the stove's amazing
This house is amazing! So much space is usually wasted in a bedroom IMO. Keep all the extra space in the areas you use most of the time. BRILLIANT!
Outstanding
5:47 I love your sink/toilet combo!
Great shots!!
I love the aesthetics of this video.
Beautiful pictures, love the colors.
Your content is amazing......keep going your nice effort!!!!
Thanks so much :)
Very much appreciated 🌷
One of the best non-loft concepts I’ve seen. Very inspiring.
interesting idea...a reverse loft.very clever.
This is awesome,I love this home and the zero waste concept
The tiny house looks beautiful and it looks like they really enjoy it! However, the small water tank won't be able to help fight fires in the forest, as they house is right next to the trees. Better to evacuate in such an emergency.
He spent more time on his knees in this video than I do in a year. We’ll pray he never has health issues or most of this set up won’t work.
Rotfl!!🤣
I think its very cute almost like hidden rooms and the roof top patio, great area and scenery. I think its great!
Love the videos you guys share, amazing to see how tiny homes can really reduce footprint and open up sustainable thinking and living!
Stunning! I love the creativity and sustainability incorporated!
You have a piece of the Commodore Ballroom? .... oh my what memories .... does it sometimes keep you awake at night .... ? That floor had a life of its own I seem to remember!!! (Fabulous video ... I wish I could like it more than once ... thank you!)
💙💙💙 all the storage in the roof deck, excellent job
Love your tiny house
I Love this. Beautiful home.
Really, really great job. Thank you for sharing.
well it was inevitable, someone had the same idea of a reverse loft as i had. It's a Beautiful tinyhome!
Thanks for posting and sharing. “Reverse loft,” is something new to me.
Nice house but why on earth did they decide to have a lower bedroom at their age where you have to crawl and can't even sit properly? I've seen these lower bedroom solutions in other tiny houses too and they never look appealing. I hope it really works for them though. I think the loft bedrooms ,(with stairs, not ladders leading to the loft) where one can stand next to the bed seem like the best solution and even more so if you can include a skylight too. Anyway, it's really interesting to see different tiny houses to get a clearer personal vision of a functional space. The very spacious rooftop deck was a nice extra!
I don't consider myself a claustrophobic person, but the reverse loft feels kind of coffin-ish to me. Just my own feeling. Kudos to them for getting on the floor and crawling into their bedroom like that. My husband and I have decided on a yurt tiny home - having everything on one level. But I do like some of the ideas in this house. Good "low to no waste" ambassadors.
Very smart van build, super informative, thank you for sharing so much knowledge.
Un couple super inspirant!
It would be nice to “package” deal their house. A customized home with all the features that someone with a lifetime of experience builds.
Agreed! I think making sustainable changes in lifestyle also needs to be made simpler and just easier to incorporate for the average person who might not be bothered to learn the in depth details.
It's just amazing how people live! 🤗
Brilliant ideas! Thank you for sharing
Congratulations! It’s beautiful!
Todo, excepto el dormitorio, me parece bien pensado y confortable. Felicitaciones por su hermosa casita.
Lovely home. The zero waste aspect is a start and I like the vision they have for coaching new communities.
The house is unique I’ll grant you that I like it. Not sure bout the BR. I’m brain storming on a project to collect the condensation in my van to useable water. Thank you guys
Wow. 👌🌹🙏💗great. I really enjoyed watching it.
We need you!!! Thank you!
Cheers to this couple they give me great hope
Nice! I didn't see a hob or oven though. What were the cooking arrangements then? Not sure if I'd be wanting to try and make a bed in that low headroom sleeping space! The shower room was ace though and even a urinal. Not many women would accept that!
Why wouldn't women accept a urinal? It means there shouldn't be a mess on the toilet seat!
This way of living is so fascinating to me. I worry that its not sustainable once you get on in age though. There is a lot of manual work involved that some may not be able to navigate.
awesome information on green living in style
Wasn't expecting that bedroom!
Beautiful home!
Nice build 🤘
You guys are always so inspiring!! This is awesome!❤
this couple have a wealth of info to sharek- hooray!
It's absolutely beautiful
Which is tedious: literally crawling to bed to sleep or climbing a few steps to sit in the lounge? Can there be no compromise on the height?
There are always trade offs, every compromise means taking away from something else... Like they could combine the living room and bedroom with a convertible bed but then they add the tedium of always converting the space up to multiple times a day, for example.
But the bed is easier than the normal climbing and crawling lofts and the few steps are fewer than the normal stairs to loft... You'd have to go bigger/longer or figure a way to make it 2 story when parked otherwise... Keeping it to this footprint size limits options but they've done a good job to maximize what they could get out of it...
I think this would be a time for a Murphy bed in the LR so you wouldn't have to crawl on your knees to get into bed. Perhaps even an elevator bed in the LR to convert at bed time.
@@ZeoCyberG I am talking about compromise not trade off. Not making the upper loft as bedroom and the room under as lounge area nor making the bedroom very low like a coffin so as to make the upper loft Grande.
I am just imagining a foot decrease in the loft and add that foot to the lower room. But that is just me and my comment. If that is the design that works for them, then so be it.
@@hanzkaran1966 Sorry but trade offs and compromises in this case are the same thing. Besides, you can't just add height when the entire structure has to stay within the legal size limit. So your only option is to trade it off, meaning for every bit gained for the loft the other space below or above it will lose space and the resulting difference is your compromise...
While, if you did ignore the size limits and went bigger, then you wouldn't be able to easily move it anymore, added costs, etc... Again, there are always trade offs and it doesn't matter whether you want to call them compromises... There's always some sort of cost/exchange...
@@roseburke3962 Sure, but the Disadvantages of murphy beds include that they can be challenging to fold out and put away and that they may cause you to have to rearrange your room throughout the day. Murphy beds are also not that durable, can be dangerous if not used properly, and are relatively expensive compared to other types of beds... While elevator bed has similar issues and cost considerations, plus anything mechanical will eventually wear our and break down for a long term consideration and unless it's over open space the bed may have to be too high to easily get in and out without a step ladder... There's reasons you don't see transformable spaces used more often...
I am in the process of finding a builder who can be flexible at incorporating my sustainable ideas and requests but it has been challenging. Great home and excellent ideas.
Super cute tiny house!🤗
Super inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
wow very nice home
