I’m British born and British bred but moved to the US aged 36 and since I moved here , everyone always says life can’t be shit in the UK because we all live like the royal family. I show them this film and it blows their minds.

excellent flick i showed it to some friends of mine who are all yankees like me and didn't know dick about british anything and even they all agreed it was excellent.
best part of the whole flick, though, has to be when the scottish guy with the mullet pucnhes RAY's lights out. only time in the whole flick you get to see the character finally get what's coming to him.

Plus it's a more accurate depiction of London and London life than the usual "Hollywood version" as seen in films like Notting Hill, Mary Poppins etc

@@Hoffinator well of course mary poppins is a ww2 fantasy flick and the others are yuppie romcoms designed purely to appeal to females. naturally they're not as realistic as "NIL" they're different genres. i gotta say, though, i both liked "RAY" and yet wanted to jump into the screen and slam him one. definitely piqued my machismo.

Note to all women who experience domestic violence from their partners:-
When they say they are sorry and will never do it again they mean it. BUT they WILL do it again. Over and over.
Get away from the psycho before he does it again or kills you.
In the U.K. contact the charity Refuge. I’m saying this as a retired (male) nurse. Also, it’s not just “working class” men who do it.

@@expectamiracle2023 Please could you clarify? By “a poor take” do you think I have misunderstood something and that you can break the cycle without avoiding the violence? Do you think women should stay with their psycho to suffer more abuse and violence?

@@expectamiracle2023 You are being rather cryptic. I still do not understand the point you are trying to make.
The bottom line is that if a woman is with a violent psycho she should get away from that psycho - despite any promises that the psycho makes along the lines of “I’m sorry, it won’t happen again”. The psycho may even mean it when they say that. The salient point is that women need to know it WILL happen again and again and again.

It's strange. This won two BAFTAs, among other awards. It may be Gary Oldman's best film... and Gary's not even in it. It did bomb at the box office because it's not a "feel-good movie." And it's not the kind of movie everyone can identify with. I mean, I know there's a lot of domestic unrest in the world. But... it's different in different parts of the world. People in Britain say... this is accurate. And this is why Oldman made this movie. To address what goes on in the neighborhood he was born and raised in. Oldman has said repeatedly that his family wasn't like this. But... many are and he wanted to show that. I hope more people do check this thing out and he (and it) gets the consideration it deserves.
