Very easy to understand the tournament.
Group stages: Korea played well and the two red cards that Portugal got were perfectly valid. If you don't think so watch the full game.
Round of 16: both Italy and Korea played dirty af.
But this is kinda where the controversy starts.
Round of 8: superbly controversial. Spain should have beaten us (korea) literally just spanked us.
Spain is perfectly valid to make any kind of news they want about this game. Disgusting.
Round of 4 (semi final): we actually played very well and had so many chances on goal. If you don't believe me watch the FULL game.
Overall it was a controversial tournament with the quarters being the most controversial.
But the players and the fans played and cheered with every bit of integrity and did genuinely believe that we were playing good football (which at times we did).

Interestingly, many Koreans (myself included) feel that the Spanish game was more controversial than the game vs Italy. I think it has to do with the fact that with Spain, neither side played physical or dirty. So there was more focus on the poor decisions made by the referee. However, if you go back and look at the game vs Italy, it was pretty dirty on both sides (Regardless of the controversial decisions made by the Refs). I know many Italian friends on the comments wont believe me, but if you really go back and watch the game, there were some nasty tackles by the Italians as well. I think both side got riled up and ended up playing dirty on each other. However, I will admit that the ref were fully incapable of regulating a WC match. Also, please don't take away anything from the Korean players. They ran their heart out, and some of them even proved themselves in European stages (Park Ji Sung, Lee Young Pyo, Ahn Jung Hwan, etc.).

1934 Italy World Cup is considered as the worst one among all sports championships since the start of the Olympic games in 1896 because of the interruption of the politics into the sports championship. 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics is compared to 1934 Italy World Cup for the intervention of politics into sports games. They also have common features including both countries being under the dictatorship. 1934 Italy World Cup semi-final match between Italy vs Austria is an example.
1954 Swiss World Cup final match between West Germany vs Hungary is another example. German players did intake drugs before and in the middle of the game. They made excuses like they thought it was a vitamin though they absolutely knew what they did intake. It was an abuse of drugs.
1978 Argentina World Cup is another version of 1934 Italy World Cup since it was due to the Argentine dictatorship.
1982 Spain World Cup was another fraud. When the Spanish national football team missed a penalty kick, a referee allowed them to try again. Spain could proceed to the second round thanks to the obvious help of the referee. Another match between West Germany vs Algeria is even called ‘Disgrace of Gijon’ and it is still remembered.
What about 2002 World Cup? Did S.Korea national football team win since S.Korea was under dictatorship and politics intervened like Italy in 1934 or Argentina in 1978? Did S.Korean players win since they tried drugs during the match like West Germany in 1954 final? Did any S.Korean player score a goal using his hands like Diego Maradona did in the 1986 Mexico World Cup against England? Did any S.Korean player block a goal using his hands like Luis Suarez in the 2010 S.Africa World Cup against Ghana?
Cheat? When Greece won the Euro 2004, was it due to cheating? Did UEFA investigate since Greece became the champion though they were underdogs? When the Netherlands proceeded to the finals in 1974 and 1978 although 1974 was their first time that they played in World Cup, was that due to cheating? When Croatia proceeded to the semi-final in 1998 though it was their first time to play in World Cup, was it thanks to cheating?
This is because anyone can make a video that distorts the truth and post it online. It is because most people in Europe are full of an inferiority complex against the achievement of the S.Korean national football team in 2002. A stupid public just believes as they want, and it believes that what they think and see is the whole picture. Poor.

Please rewatch the complete match Korea-Italy back first. Because "funny enough" this video does not mention that Italian player Tomasi should have been sent off in the first half after elbowing a Korean player. Nor does it mention very clearly that Totti was sent off after his second yellow card (not a direct red) for unsportive behaviour. Italy had enough chances to win the game in regular time but they failed. Bit childish to nag on about a rigged game. If you make the assumption, then provide the proof. Korea was probaby already pleased after reaching the final 16 so this was a mere bonus for them. Why doesn't Italy mention the unsportive behaviour of Materazzi against Zidane in the WC 2006 final that would eventually have Zidane (rightfully) sent off? 'Spain can fairly complain about referee errors - however, they also missed a penaly didn't they?

This is a reason why Italian football is sunken. When Italy lost to Argentina in 1990, they hated Maradona. Maradona played for his country, but Italians blamed Maradona since they lost to Maradona’s Argentina. When Italy lost to Korea, the owner of Perugia kicked Ahn who scored a goal against Italy out of the club. How could that sort of uncivilized incident happen in the 21st century? That was the nasty level of the most Italian football fans. They never analyze what their faults were, why they lost. They just ascribe their loss to winners. Since Italy lost to Macedonia so that they could not qualify for Qatar WC, was it rigged? If a football match does not result in what you want, you just ascribe it to fraud since you are uncivilized. If a football match does not return what you wanted to see, you just get agitated bcs you have no intellect to judge. Shame on you.

In the World Cup, the referee judges only in favor of Korea, but it is not true. To be precise, it's not that "only" Korea was judged favorably. First of all, in the match against Italy, Vieri broke Kim Tae-young's nose bone with his elbow, but he didn't even blow a foul, let alone a card, and at the same time as Panucci fouled Seol Ki-Hyeon in the penalty kick, Coco pushed Yoo Sang-Cheol down, but it didn't matter. Not giving a card (Coco He had already received a yellow card and should have been sent off.). And even when Ahn Jung-hwan kicked a penalty kick, Ahn Jung-hwan was not given a chance to kick it again even though the Italian players were fouled over the line.
And in the match against Spain, the referee did not foul despite the Spanish players' aggressive tackles, squashed Kim Nam-il's ankle, but did not even foul, and Ahn Jung-hwan was hit on the back of the head by the Spanish player in the penalty area, but the referee did not foul. Didn't give a penalty. If we had taken the penalty kick then and succeeded, the misjudgments in overtime could have been a thing of the past. And the scene at 4:23 shows the Spaniard holding Kim Tae-young's neck with his arm.
Of course, there are many other unfair judgments that Korea has received. It is true that Korea also benefited from the referee's judgment, but there are also many unfair judgments in Korea. I couldn't speak English fluently, so I had to use a translator. However, I hope that the misunderstandings accumulated over the past 20 years will be resolved even a little.
