  • In this 1977 morning mehfil at Samvaad Foundation, Joshi sings Aman Ali Khan's madhyalaya bandish in Gurjari Todi, 'Aaj more man laago, langarva', before topping it off with the famous 'Beguna guna gaave'. He concludes with Wajid Ali Shah's thumri, 'Babul, mora naihar chhooto hi jaaye', in Bhairavi. He is accompanied by Shashikant Mulye on the tabla, but the harmonium accompanist is unknown.

When the music moves us such that we can’t even put in words what magic it does to us, perhaps the best we can do is to share it, even if in snippets, with family and friends. It heightens their appreciation of us listeners’ tastes as well as of the musicians of a recently bygone era in India’s Classical music.

@@FarhanAmin1994 Thank you for your message. I myself am not a music student but an art student, but the lines, contrasts and levels in painting and music have something in common. I am also learning the Dongxiao musical instrument by myself. In addition to the traditional Chinese music. In addition, among foreign music, I love traditional South Asian music, such as qawwali, I like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali and the works of Fanna-Fi-Allah, and I have collected some music videos for collection, personal feeling qawwali music is very suitable to listen to when painting and creating. It can make people focus and imaginative, can you please tell me what is the name of the type of Indian music you sing and collect, what is its name, I want to search to understand the style and history of this music, thank you.

Wow! Thanks for sharing this with us, Ji Ye. :D Would love to hear the dongxiao instrument. I do enjoy listening to instruments and songs that are new to me.
Most of the content that I have uploaded on the channel and that which I learnt and sing is from a North Indian genre called ‘khayal’ (read as kha-yaal; rhymes with CARL). You may find useful descriptions on Wikipedia, Britannica and the like. ‘Khayal’ literally means a thought or an idea-and while it is a largely improvisatory form, it is governed by the rules of raaga, another name for a special kind of melody that is both sung and played on instruments like the sitar and flute.

@@FarhanAmin1994 Thank you for your message, I will use the terminology in your message as a reference point for my search, As I overheard the qawwali music of Mr. Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali's qawwali music and it was like a shock and fit into my soul, so I started to search for this style of music.
I will share with you some videos of my own collection about the Dongxiao. The Dongxiao can be roughly divided into internal mouthpieces and external mouthpieces. I will briefly talk about its evolution. The earliest Dongxiao is the external mouthpiece. Outer cut structure into the air hole, also known as shakuhachi at that time, then evolved into an internal mouthpiece, which was introduced to Japan during the Tang and Song years. Japan retained the structure of the external mouthpiece, and evolved its own nation on the basis of ancient Chinese shakuhachi. The unique internal manufacturing process of the music pipe, as well as the tone and skills of the Japanese national characteristics (like the feeling of wind cutting). The ancient Chinese shakuhachi introduced to Japan gradually evolved into today's Japanese shakuhachi, while the outer-blown shakuhachi in China gradually evolved into the inner-blown shakuhachi, which is today's Dongxiao. (there are 3 types of Dongxiao in China:琴箫, 洞箫, 南箫 , the structure is the same but the timbre characteristics are different, which can be understood as from small to large, from delicate to generous) timbre (clean, concentrated, like the bud shape of a Chinese orchid), of course, is the ancient Chinese shakuhachi lost or gradually evolved into today's Dongxiao , this is a lot of discussion, my words are just for reference. The Chinese dongxiao has 6/8 finger holes, and the Japanese shakuhachi has 5/7 finger holes. Both instruments have a finger hole at the back, and the remaining finger holes are in the front.
The positioning of the dongxiao in traditional Chinese music is roughly 1-5 solo and small ensembles. The dongxiao and the Chinese bamboo flute are brothers and are in the same blood. The biggest feature of the dongxiao is the bass.Due to its vertical shape structure, its sound size is limited,in large-scale Chinese folk music ensembles and folk operas, Not used much in large Chinese folk music ensembles and folk operas, (the Chinese bamboo flute with a large tone is used a lot in Chinese orchestras and operas, so the Chinese bamboo flute is very popular. There are also many flute works and techniques), but the dongxiao is not an isolated instrument, there are many scores that are very suitable for the expression and performance of the dongxiao. The playing skills of the Chinese bamboo flute can be transferred to the dongxiao. The following are some that I think are good Works, there are solos, there are ensembles used in traditional folk art, and you can watch the videos on the Chinese bilibili website and YOUTU.
