How Criminals Pose as Utility Workers to Break Into Homes

- What starts with a simple knock on the door can turn into a violent robbery. Some criminals are posing as utility workers or delivery drivers to break into residences, tricking unsuspecting people into opening their doors and allowing thieves into their homes. To see if homeowners are vulnerable to this type of crime, Inside Edition outfitted former law enforcement officer and security consultant Steve Kardian with a hard hat, vest and clipboard, and sent him to knock on doors around New York. #InsideEdition

When I was little, a man came to our front door in a panic asking if he could use our phone for an emergency. We said no as we didn't trust him. Few days later I saw his picture on the local news station for getting into people's homes and robbing them.
That's pretty scary to think about. You guys dodged a bullet 😂
Lol
Wow
sure, but its not always true, for example once at night in our house in a not too good neighborhood a young black man knocked on our door asking to call the cops cause someone with a knife was following him, it was obvious he wasn't acting, he was legit scared, and in fact we let him in and called the cops to escort him to the metro which was 5 min from our house, turns out someone with something was actually following him when we checked the cctv, but if he was a bad guy, our pitbull would have not been too nice, plus 3 adults in the home, and yes this was at night, just be careful lol

This is one of many reasons why a storm door is nice to have.
You have it locked at all times, so if someone knocks, you can open the main door, and can see and talk to them, but they can't simply walk in.
I have one and our family loves it
I dont even open the door for jehovahs witnesses what makes you think ima open it now
😂 🤣 😃 Lol
They used to come to my house ALL the time and would knock for ages until my dad finally opened the door one day and told them off and they've never been back since lol.

This is why I constantly lock my apartment door despite my roommates yelling at me not to and NEVER answer the door to someone I don’t know unless I’m expecting someone/something coming.
Most Latino parents always tell their kids to not open to nobody but family 🤷🏽♂️
Depends where u live
Same dude I opened the door one time for somebody never did it again, I never got hit but my grandfather told me not to open the door again for people I don't know. My family is Hispanic.
This has happened a lot in my neighborhood. First, I usually point out my no soliciting sign on my door. When that fails to work, I usually call the cops immediately after taking a picture with my cell phone to show the police as evidence.
Nah I’m Just Gonna Put package and when they open it’s gonna be full with farts spray
Sometimes I feel lucky to have extreme anxiety and paranoia. I don’t open the door for ANYBODY, not even my neighbors.

My dog would destroy someone trying to brake in. Very well trained. Get yourself a protective dog guys!!
My mother never opens the door to anyone other than expected guests. She hammered that in my head since i was young and now when i hear a knock at the door i go all stealth and sneak around my house to the window and peak outside only to not open the door because i dont know who the heck that is.

Thanks to Inside Edition for showing us this... This will help many people to be safe in their house...
"Noooo, I'm not comfortable with you coming in right now" plume of smoke comes out
I live in a nice neighborhood & my kids think i'm crazy for always being careful, cautious & locking doors. It doesn't matter where you live. Criminals will find you. I talk to people thru the door & in this case I'd tell them you'll call the company directly to verify. Plus, utility people typically wouldn't need to be inside your home. They have access to what they need via the community electric, gas, etc boxes located throughout your neighborhood.
Ya can’t fool me! I don’t even open the door to my own family 😂😂
I shared it immediately with friends. Wow people so Evil 😡
So, now we have to figure out a way to verify the UPS before we open the door..
It's easy to verify a ups because the truck is right there
Don't open the door from the get-go. Ask how you can help from the other side before opening the door. That'll make them think twice about coming in. But if they make up an excuse ask for ID and call the company you hired first. Right when they come in, tell them that companies never send employees to private residences and that they should leave
This clip is definitely worthwhile - glad to see so many views.
I never open the door unless I’m expecting someone
We FBI don't knock.
3:35, but the other guy opened the door as well and still did the right thing
Dr. Burger cuz it’s considered more safe if a man opens the door.

In Austria, we get a letter before any ”commissioner” wants to check whatever he wants.
The second amendment is the best. I'm sure most of these owners don't have a gun for home defense . Everyone should answer the door with a gun at there side .
People keep them locked in safes
grammar not strong point
@@crystaltheo8494 You can still get them in a moment's notice.
This creeps me out. Just yesterday I moved to a new house and a guy knocked on my door saying he was from the gas department and he was there to turn on the gas. Since he seemed to have the uniform on and I was expecting someone from that department, I just let him in. Luckily for me he was legit 😅 But I was completely alone last night, so if it would have been a criminal, I don’t know what would have happened to me 😰 Thanks for the warning, Inside Edition!
thanks for giving peoples ideas inside edition
That’s so worrying
Even if they asked for an ID...opening the door to them would be all those evil criminals need.
There going to open the door if someone knocks. And if someone says there checking on water pressure that is not a crazy idea!
Wow, That’s actually really scary!!! This makes me wanna be Extra Caution!!!
storytime: i was home alone on friday and a guy wearing this exact vest knocked on my door. i didn’t answer it because i was home alone and i didn’t wanna open it for safety reasons. i’m pretty sure they saw me inside my house laying on my couch because you can see from the front door. so, after about 5 minutes of standing on my front porch, the guy goes back to the truck, mind you it looked completely real, like a truck the town people drive so i felt really bad, anyways the guy is just sitting in his truck in front of my house for about 30 mins. i’m really terrified at this point so i armed myself with knives and ran unstairs into my attic where i could see the front of the house. he eventually left but when i didn’t see any numbers for the town on the back of the truck, or any identification of any business, i was immediately grateful i didn’t open my door. i still wonder what could have happened if i did. (btw all town vehicles and power line/ telephone pole people will have a number on the back of the vehicle or something saying they’re apart of the town but this one had nothing) also, these people didn’t come back so i knew that it must’ve not been something worth answering the door for.
And we wonder how we get robbed
2.58 that was my elementary school principal 🤣

This is sad and scary
When kindness is a problem, society is going down....
That's my criminal co-worker... Can't believe he's been hiding techniques from me!
People say, “that’s why I live in a gated community” but comeon. How much common sense does it take after watching this video to avoid this?
Most gated communities give a false sense of security. Anyone that wants to get in usually can by just waiting for another authorized person to go in.
3:31 I am LIVING for this woman’s look
You know someone knocked on my door after I watched this and it looked like an electrician. My mom opened the door and I was like “DONT LET HIM IN.”
You did the right thing by not letting him in but you spoke to him which could be very bad in some instances 😂
Reminds me of Home Alone where the bad guys pretend to be cops
This is a great report. I would totally fall for the "water commission". If someone does get inside and I discover they shouldn't have, there is a good chance they will not leave alive.
Already fell for something similar to this once, probably would have fell for this as well. Unfortunately our intruder not only left alive but with all of our belongings as well. At least he was unarmed and allowed my son and I to remain comfortably dressed in our 3pc suits and bowties before tying and gaging us.
I love these videos so much !
I wouldn’t open the doors anyways because I’m an insecure loner.
Next, look into the criminals posing as politicians in the White House please
My Asian Mom:
Who Duh Phuck is that, get him off my driveway
Why can’t I stop watching these
Hi inside edition
wait so you can pretend to have a camera crew then rob them while pretending to film
This is why I always check my ring camera before opening my door
Thanks for the useful trick! It worked first try for me!!
First like love inside edition
I’ll have the 911 button ready if someone like these workers comes to my house.
You make me so scared to see strangers near my home now 😅
This is specifically why I don't answer the door for unexpected people.

Avalasia Love there might be inside edition viewers subscibers that might later rob houses.

I don't even let legit RG&E in my house without an appointment lol.
Well I live in a gated community so I think I’m good
Think again. People stay posted waiting for someone who actually has a code to come right in only for them to follow in right afterwards.
I would still be cautious...
MunchieGang TV the gate in my community closed right after the back tire hits a sense and it closes fast
But they do it at night time
Not all the time 🕒
Even more reason for suspicion.
I had a guy from a "security" company knock on my door at 9 at night. Then he tried to sell me a security camera system and needed to look around in my house. I had a security gate luckily and told him no thanks, but it made me really afraid from then on. :/
I always show off my dads gun collection if I let them In before asking if they will rob me lmao
