This is a hard and scary situation to be in in the moment. He seems honest and upfront about his struggles and admitting there wasn’t an excuse for his behavior. Hopefully he corrects/pays for those homeowners to repair those damages.
Also, it’s a bit damaging to say that you shouldn’t hire someone who has a criminal record. That just keeps people who actually try to overcome their struggles from getting anywhere positive and contributing to society and tells them that crime will pay, instead of being a good citizen. And remember: criminal record means they have been caught; just because someone doesn’t have a criminal record doesn’t mean they aren’t doing crimes or won’t do a bad job…

It is the homeowners decision as to who they hire. When being promised no criminal background that should be something that is delivered on. I’m not saying every felon can not be trusted, but in these situations I stand with the homeowners. If you had the option of choosing a reliable and trustworthy person with no criminal history vs. a felon with a background of burglary, you’re going to say you will choose the felon?
The contractor seems very honest and sincere in his apology and situation and I feel terribly for him, but the homeowners used a website that guaranteed a reliable contractor. That was not delivered in this case.
When you spend thousands of your own money you would want as little to no trouble as well.

Hiring a contractor or a handyman is a roll-of-the-dice. I know of several contractors who had their licenses suspended and their liability insurance cancelled. The contractors filed for bankruptcy and "re-organized" under a new name with a bogus owner (spouse or some other family member). They inflicted a cycle of terror and misery on homeowners leaving a trail of shoddy workmanship. They also filed liens against the homeowners property when the homeowner refused to pay for the shoddy work.
