- If there is a raccoon out in the afternoon like this, something is wrong with it. They are a burden in our area and have killed many of my chickens. They don’t even kill to just eat. They will kill as many as they can and leave the carcass’s.
My dogs are on a boundary. This creature came into their boundary. My Doberman is protecting her family which is her instinct.
If big homie Doberman wasn’t there it would’ve turned out a lot different 😂

Raccoons can transmit many different diseases, including rabies.

most folks out in the woods have dogs not just as pets, but as defense for livestock. they have their dogs vacinated regularly for rabies so the risk is practically zero.
How the fuck else do you think farm dogs and shit exist lol. like what, did you think people just bought a new sheep dog every 2 months once theirs gets bit?
on top of that, rabies usually isnt what causes them to come out during the day. they usually end up getting a brainrotting virus from overconsuming our garbage, which can cause any plethora of strange behaviors. Ive seen them become paralyzed and just lay face down till they run out of air, seen em walk in circles on repeat till they drop dead from exhaustion, seen em simply get too tired, pick a spot, lay down, and just wait for themselves to die. Its easy to mistake for rabies, they have the same uncanny vibe and walk alot of the time, slow, head down and unmoving etc.
With this specific one, its hard to tell what the issue is since i didnt see the beginning before the racoon and the dogs made contact with eachother, otherwise id be able to get a little more info of the body language, if the racoon just decided to charge, etc.
generally speaking ,if a coon is out during the day, its a problem, and although it is a risk for the dog to handle it, you dont exactly have your .30 cal air rifle legal to use within civilian zoning limits on you at all times. although its risky, its better in that situation to let the dogs dispatch the racoon rather than trying to fight it with something stupid like a shovel. just take the dogs to the vet (most farm folk have a vet who does outcalls and will book it to the farm asap for emergencies). You can rest assured that on most farms, the farm dogs get better treatment and healthcare plans than your average civilian. farmers need them. without those dogs, their farm doesn't run, a human cant do the work they do, only a farm dog can.
hope that helps clear up any worries, been living around these types of folk for a while now, theyre all usually good people who take good care of their pets.

This particular Frenchie, yes, definitely. But i have seen Frenchies that were built way more athletic, and had lots of stamina, running and swimming for hours, (not overheating because of the water, and they actually had snouts and big noses).
Those Frenchies also had way more drive, chasing rabbits. And they took on other dogs who tried to take their toys, rather feisty. Guess there was more terrier in their lineage, and a bit less bulldog.
not only is this cruel to the raccoon but you're also risking your dogs getting rabies.

I'm not really sure what I'd do in that situation though, I'm definitely not putting my hands between them to try to break it up.
And obviously there's probably something wrong with the raccoon, because they're typically not out and about during daylight hours. The ones I've seen during the day seemed to all have something wrong with them. So like you said, the dogs could definitely catch whatever it has.
If they're on their own property in a raccoon walks on their property what do you want them to do
