  • I put it into simple terms what this VAC wave means for CS2.
    0:00 - VAC WAVE!
0:38 - Is this 'it' for cheaters?
1:19 - What did Valve do?
    1:54 - Kernel level anti-cheat? (AGAIN!)
3:23 - How many have been banned?
    4:12 - Fun ban facts
    6:10 - VAC porn incoming?

Anticheat isn’t a permissions issue- never has been. It’s a resources issue. Valorant has kernel-level anticheat. So does Escape from Tarkov. Invasive access isn’t the magic wand that people think it is, and Valve knows it- client-based anticheat has always been a contest of manpower. These machine-learning based approaches have the potential to squish cheaters regardless of the specific technical method they use, freeing companies from the massive expense of the treadmill and freeing consumers from the indiscriminate all-seeing eye of corporate-sponsored spyware. Unfortunately, it’s also a nascent technology, and Valve seem to be the only ones willing to invest in its development.

Now valve is forcing subtick in half assed game that’s filled with cheats and you die behind walls after peeking . But sure trust in the process . Apex runs at 20 ticks and it's entirely playable. People think it ends with ring-0 ACs, but as cheaters are moving away from software, so too will ACs and require cameras or other specific AC-approved hardware to play certain games.
Kinda like how HDCP, but for gaming.
I'm glad Valve doesn't follow this, no doubt an AI is going to hallucinate sometimes, but kernel-level ACs are also doing that. As long as those people get unbanned relatively quickly it's not a huge problem.
And obviously they wouldn't go kernel-level because of Linux (although I wouldn't be entirely against a black-box Valve-built kernel _specifically_ for high-level esport gaming, because on Linux you can actually switch kernels)

also ban waves have a problem, someone might've downloaded a cheat, and would be using it for months already, and then they randomly get banned. While kernel level is good to be able to detect kernel level injections (loads of ban waves, but fast fixes for cheat makers) they're mostly the exact same otherwise.
Also while I do prefer non-kernel level myself (for the obvious reason of the risks associated with giving kernel access to anything) I don't mind using them either way, mainly because anything can spy on me either way without it (the one thing everyone try hard pushing against it is failing to notice), only annoying thing will be clean installing anything if one of the kernel ac providers ever manages to get exploited.

@@Unknown_Genius I think you missed the point of the whole improvement on AI. Also closet cheating past a good AI would be almost impossible thanks to human error. Or it would be at the point where it wouldn’t even be considered cheating as they can’t move off the information the cheat provides, or accomplish aim and reflexes with enough human inconsistency but at the same time simulated skill, that makes it pointless to cheat in the first place.

What did Valve do? They added a simple server side check for "no spread" and "fast shot" features of cheats and detected the rage cheaters and hvh kids who used them. This thing should have been there from the start. Now all these rage cheaters will go "legit mode", and will make your games even more frustrating because they will drag the game and in the end you will still lose.
In the game of cat and mouse Valve is miles behind. Seeing people think this will actually fix something is very funny.

Sounds like a mosquito in my ear. I'm fan of "alternative music" but that's just noise.
