A lot of people seem to have missed Bents point. Not all players are at the same ability level as Keane was used to playing with and it’s that understanding and expectation that he needed to adjust.

When he says standards, he means not taking the piss with stuff like training, diet, timekeeping and just the whole approach to being the best they can be. If Keane expects players playing for the likes of Derby county and Blackpool to be as good as top flight premier league players, he's obviously a bit of an idiot.
Ireland had a great team under Charlton built around some top English players, ever since then expectations have been too high

It's alright for England to pick John Barnes, Raheem sterling, Owen Hargreaves, Tony Dorigo, Fikayo Tomori, Marc Guehi, Luther Blissett, John salako, Nathaniel Chalobah and Cyrille Regis though? Not to mention the English rugby team having players from Australia, South Africa, Philippines and the united states. Plenty of cricketers over the years too that weren't born in England.
If football has evolved as Bent claimed, then surely standards should be even higher, we shouldn't be asking people to lower their standards, we should be expecting them to be raised.

Im irish and love keane but hes not a good manager and when he was assistant manager at ireland he fell out with most of the players!! He absolutely needs to lower his expectations of those players because he expects them to be world class like he was and like the players at man utd were!
But they are not, most are championship level.
The best managers understand and work with players and are interpersonal.

GAA is the number 1 and 2 sports NOT football!!! There is no grassroots football in Ireland for football.

@docholiday-lm4vf ive seen about 80 percent of the current campaign. Im aware of gaa and rugby being popular and thus a smaller pool of players, im not talking about that, im talking about effort and organisation, i dont think the players are reaching their potential, they could be doing better, that comes down to a manager who motivates and expects higher standards(im not talking about unrealistic standards), theres some good young players there, theyre underachieving.

Its was 11 players all in the premier league and some like paul mc grath, roy keane, dennis irwin, duff etc where some of the very best in england and even that team only reached last 16

I don’t think any “old school” type managers, even top top ones like José can be effective these days with these fragile minds and overly inflated egos. Alex Ferguson wouldn’t be able to manage in todays climate in my opinion. His best tools are taken away.
Pep doesn’t strike me as someone who would accept mediocre performances. He wasn’t exactly shy about sharing his thoughts with Haaland at Burnley. If a manager has a successful team, he can do what he likes. That hasn’t changed.

Yes they are professionals but not premier league level and thats bents point. Keane played in a very good irish team that was not only full of premier league players but top top premier league players. Most played for Liverpool, utd, chelsea and arsenal.
