There was another Bengal Famine of 1770s whereby 10 million Bengalis, that is one-third of the total Bengali population, died due to starvation.
The British East-India Company established their first trading headquarters in India in 1611, trading in cotton, silk, indigo dye, salt, spices, and tea.
Over time, it gained significant trading concessions from the Mughal Empire and established trading posts across India.
After the Battle of Plassey in 1757 , it began to exercise military and administrative control over Bengal.
Peasants in Bengal were forced by the British East-India Company to stop growing food crops (like wheat, rice, vegetables) and to grow OPIUM.
(Because there was more profit to be made by the British East-India Company in the Opium trade.)
Due to this debacle in Bengal the British East-India Company was forced to hand over power and all their possessions to the British Crown in 1773.
Lord Wellesley announced in 1798 the Scheme of the Subsidiary Alliance to control the Indian princely states. As a result of this they lost their autonomy and came under direct British rule.
