    Lyrics:
    (a-wa) O kodwa u zo-nge li-sa namhlange
    (a-wa a-wa) Si-bona kwenze ka kanjani
    (a-wa a-wa) Amanto mbazane ayeza
    She's a rich girl
She don't try to hide it
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
    He's a poor boy
    Empty as a pocket
Empty as a pocket with nothing to lose
    Sing Ta na na
    Ta na na na
She got diamonds on the soles of her shoes
She got diamonds on the soles of her shoes
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes

You can be anywhere in the world, but when you hear that base style, you’re know where the music is from. South African jazz is distinctive.

The argument that Paul Simon was exploiting African culture was a
precursor to the "Woke-movement". What was intended to bond and unite
was taken by negative people who only could see their own point of view.

In case anyone else is looking for more information about the male vocal choir featured here, they're called "Ladysmith Black Mambazo" from South Africa, founded by Joseph Shabalala in 1960. As he is still leading the choir in this video, he has since passed away in 2020 at age 79. The only founding member still left in the group is Albert Mazibuko, the second man from the left. He was 64 at the time this video was shot in 2012.

the closest i think i ever got to a true transcendent experience at a concert was seeing Paul on the Graceland Tour at Meriwether Post Pavilion in Maryland. Ladysmith Black Mombazo were mesmerizing, Hugh Masakela and Miriam Mikeba sounded like heaven on Earth.
I felt lucky to be there. I've never forgotten the feeling of love and togetherness in that crowd.

So many of his songs have great basslines (Call Me Al, Late in the Evening etc.) When people say that Paul Simon is a great song writer they're probably mostly thinking about his lyrics, but he's a very underrated composer in terms of his music. No one else has incorporated so many different genres and musical styles (African, Brazilian, Latin, Cajun, reggae, jazz, gospel etc.) while always remaining true to themselves.

    • @jakejohansen1889
      @jakejohansen1889 Před 6 lety +3

Right on bluepiano... Paul Simon is a master composer of music in many styles while maintaining originality. Jerry Garcia is another master of many genres while not sounding derivative of everything else. Garcia played folk, bluegrass, blues, rock, reggae, funk, fusion, and more while maintaining his ethos of always improvising musically & never playing a song the same way. Jerry Garcia & Paul Simon are my two favorite artists to come out of the 60's. Their musical legacies will still be appreciated many generations from now.
