Charley Burley - Was an American boxer who fought as a welterweight and middleweight from 1936 to 1950. Archie Moore, the light-heavyweight champion who was defeated by Burley in a 1944 middleweight bout, was one of several fighters who called Burley the greatest fighter ever. Burley was the penultimate holder of both the World Colored Welterweight Championship and the World Colored Middleweight Championship.

One of the greatest boxers of all time! Burley was part of a group called the Black Murderers' Row who were renowned for being feared throughout the boxing world and never receiving a shot at the world title. Definitely one of the best fighters I've ever seen on film, unfortunately there's only 1 fight film of him in existence but I did the best I could with what was available. www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
I remembered that video black murder row that you made. Awesome video. Man I constantly hear that this guy was being ducked by everyone.
Not to sound disrespectful, I’m just curious. How can anyone call someone one of the greatest if there’s only one film of his fights. Didn’t look all that impressive tbh.
Really? I think he looks amazing. Also take into account what other all time great boxers have said about him, many consider him the best they've ever seen.
haNZAgod - namely Eddie Futch!
@@goattbe111 many of sugar rays bouts were not filmed and his earlier fights are the reason why we call him the greatest.
This man... he is my grandmother’s brother. I’m honored to be related to him.
Wow
Great honour imo p4p best boxer ever
why not just say he is your grandfather ?
@@joeygonzo because he wasn't? Her brother, not her husband.
Does your family have any footage of him fighting?
This is the only footage of him and yet it offers so much to learn and incorporate.
Yeahh
Charley Burley & Willie Pep were ahead of there time.
Sweet science skills.
I hate the term "ahead of their time".
Boxers in the past were clearly way more skilled

Many of them had a hard life that made them that made them the toughest and by far the most hungry to win
His defense is incredible.
Doesn't he remind you of Willie Pepp
@@adrianboyddodd8007 Now that you've said it🤔
@@sugarray710 Reminds me of a bigger Harder Punching Floyd Mayweather (Burley hit hard enough to put Archie Moore a legitimate Lightheavy on the floor)
He moved every part of his body at the same time. He was not there to be hit.
Great way of putting it. He was like a perfect stance in motion.
futch apparently compared him to RJJ
There is something so elegant yet so destructive about this boxer. His use of controlling rhythm and distance is very incredible and when you combine it with his explosive punches your seeing poetry in motion
The man was part mongoose or something. His use of spacing with body positioning + the ability to change his own timing within 2-3 seconds ....damn!
Absolutely.... I was just thinking when getting into this footage, what great movement he had!!
They called Archie Moore, Old Mongoose, but Charley Burley certainly resembles one. First thing I thought of when I watched this.
Well said. Archie Moore "The Old Mongoose," is my favorite fighter of all time. I studied the martial arts and the style that I studied was derived from India. It is called Vadha. The mongoose is the styles mascot, being the snake killer.
Burley moved and pivoted with excellent circular motion.
Again, well said.
What really gets me about this video is not just how majestic Burley looks, but how good Smith looks as well. Look at the combined footwork and movement. Modern fighters just dont fight like this
Smith was a very dangerous fighter no doubt about that.

That jab at 2:51 is a thing of beauty. Green tick on all body mechanics required to throw a dynamic jab.
It's just sad that this is the only footage of his, what a fighter.
he looked like prime roy jones in the damn 1930's lol
He looks incredible.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING FIGHTER!
Thanks for the video!
3:08 he probably could dodge bullets
WOW, My Goodness...although I’d never heard of him until just now, looking at this Mr. Burey, I can see that he was something special. Extremely quick hands and body movement.
Ezzard Charles beat Burley and Moore. What an impresive curriculum.
And he did that more than once. Charles has the best resume in boxing history by far.
It's difficult to say. Someone say that Greb has the greatest resume ever but it is difficult to argue with Charles's resume. For me, he was more greater than Ali and he would have beat his amateur version in light-heavyweight.
Franco Garcia yes but Ezzard Charles was also a lot bigger than Burley, and Burley fought one of their two fights with a broken hand. Charles was still a beast though
@@franagustin3094 Harry greb has beaten more Hall of farmers than any boxer, enough said
@@mua2 Well, that was another time and another thing. He might have been won but Charles beat him twice so we finish in same.
Never heard of him till now,he was super slick for sure, hit and not get hit.
Let me sum this up. Charley Burley was the absolute best. He didn't take a lot of unnecessary punishment like Greb, Langford, Zale, Ali, Charles, Marciano etc.... Burley was the very definition of a scientific technician. He fought the absolute best of the black Murderers row and heavyweights on a routine basis and hit harder than Greb. A LOT of top fighters blatantly ducked Burley including Robinson who wanted nothing to do with Burley or any of the black Murderers row. Burley was better than Pep who was a fantastic fighter but Willie was stopped badly by Sandler. Burley was NEVER counted out or suffered a stoppage loss like a lot of his peers. And because of his uncanny skill level he left with his health intact unlike at least 70 percent of the fighters from that era.
The closet thing to Burley you will likely see when analyzing his style is a prime Roy Jones. I often look at Roy as Burley 2.0 in terms of his skillset and as payback for the opportunity unjustly and criminally denied Burley. I feel that Burley however had better fundamental technique than Roy and he used his jab more.
Great video. Great music tract. Great boxer!!!
Charles Burley was truly GREAT!
One of my favorite fighters
Good work bro. Great to see a video on Charley Burley. The 1st fighter I featured in my book Forgotten Legends of the Ring 🥊👊

Burley could be considered the best to step in a boxing ring. Wish there was footage of him vs archie moore

Yes!
Sometimes you hear of these legendary fighters talked of in hushed tones by "boxing hipsters" and sometimes it's a bit of an anti climax when you finally see footage of them. Not Burley though. He was magical.
Put on speed 1.25. So you could aprecciate a more realiatic movement
Yeah. People think he was slow.
What do you mean? Surely the footage isn’t slowed down right? It’s just a straight up recording, so the actual speed should be no different from the depicted speed in the video recording...
@@kirklandau2826 its slowed down
Incredible ,he sees punches coming from a mile away.wonderfull
You can actually see him looking for his opening then picking his shots , it's impressive.
This is my favorite video of your hanza✊
Haha thanks it is only 1 film but it was the best I could do with something like this
So elegantly smooth! His evasiveness and counter punching abilities were top notch and it appeared to be second nature to him. He'd beat many of these youngins in this generation even! Currently reading two biographies on him. Such a humble champ who never got the chances he rightfully deserve but his reigns as World "Colored" Champion in the welterweight and middleweight classes should be looked at as official reigns. All of the guys in the black Murderers Row in those years were superb fighters! Charley Burley stands out above the rest though.
Very nice footwork and defense
Wowowowowowow. Faaaaar ahead of his time. Amazing.
When I watch his style and abilities, its no surprise the entire industry feared giving him a shot, cause he without a doubt would have claimed it.
legend
He fought like a modern day fighter. He had tremendous footwork & could control distance so well. It’s a shame he never got his shot at the title & the fact that only this footage has surfaced of him fighting is a shame. I would love to see any other footage of him; especially his fight against the Mongoose
Jon Hall he knocked moore down two times in their fight that footage would be golden
'He fought like a modern day fighter'
lol
@@louduva9849 that comment made me mad then made me laugh.

My personal favourite fighter ever ..
Terrence Crawford reminds me a bit of Charley Burley..like Burley, he uses feints very effectively to land shots..and I think crawford uses both his jab feints and footwork feints similarly to charley
There just won’t ever be fighters like Charley Burley, Harry Greb, Sam Langford, Mickey Walker, Barbados Joe Walcott, Bob Fitzsimmons, Henry Armstrong, etc., that were so good they’d troll other divisions while staying relatively the same weight, often being outweighed 20,30,40, even 50 lbs at times. Just incredible fighters mentally and physically.
So sad he didn't get to fight Sugar Ray Robinson...
@Micah Bell C'mon now. He was definetly way better than lamotta. I don't think he would've beat robinson, but for sure be his hardest fight in his prime.
Burley imo would of gave Ray Robinson absolute hell in the ring he was just as quick with his hands & had faster reflexes. I would of gave punching power advantage to Ray though it would of been a great high level match up
They would’ve made an epic trilogy
This is the one man sugar Ray Robinson feared
I think Robinson avoided the entire Black Murderers Row I heard a story about one of them beating up Ray Robinson because he wasn’t paying them for sparring.

Uncannily similar to Andre Ward in so many ways !
No offense, but God they’re not even remotely close.
@@milesmccoy2976 yeah, Burley is absolutely on another level.
In what ways specifically?
Respect to this man who agree to fight Charley burley
Great prizefighter
He’s like an old school bud Crawford
The greatest one, no doubt about that in my opinion.
You can see where Floyd Mayweather incorporated some of his style, particularly when he jumps back from a punch, also the very talented young fighters under Floyd like Devin haney and Shakur stevenson has very similar stlyes!
Yes, great comparisons. Also a bit reminiscent of Roy Jones Jr in that sense as well
Hey, Hanza. Could you make a Donnie Nietes video? Man is truly much underappreciated. Thank you for your videos, love to watch them before training session.
I've got one already bud just type his name in on CZcams and it should pop up.
His style is literally identical to Tony Canzoneri. I just noticed that.
The half angle step-back as a defense / reset option, lateral circling / stepping into side steps, slides, and low lead arm to shoot up-jabs & pawing jabs are their similarities. Their sub-style, punch volume, choice of offensive strategies, and further defenses were different.
If you boil it down...Charley Burley was a boxer-puncher and Canzoneri was a counter-puncher - just that both took those styles to another planet.
@@TainoMantis excellent observation!! Wish I knew boxing as well as you I’m still learning
Hanza long ago i made a video dedicated to you about Firpo, there are a lot of footage about him, could he have a HL made by you?
Excellent video of a legendary fighter.I have a question.Could you please do a Top 10 "Greatest Boxers" but with the condition that they must had been being KOed al least once in the 1st round.I mean people like Emile Griffith, Ken Norton, Roy Jones Jr, Jersey Joe Walcott, but those are just examples.

My favourite boxer ever the hill district Holocaust Charley burley never got a shot today he would be a multiple weight champion I remember his interview with August Wilson used to batter heavyweights on the regz
He was too skilled for his own good. The greatest boxer of all time Sugar Ray Robinson blatantly avoided him.
How so?
He didnt. He just said he needed a bigger paycheck because Charley might mess his pretty face. No one was willing to pay Robinson lol so the fight never happened. SRR also said the same about Cocoa Kid (another member of the BMR)
Piano Giovanna kid chocolate
Micah Bell. Nah, it would’ve been a competitive fight, but I think that Robinson would’ve won.
@@pianogiovanna4854 at that time. Asking for a bigger paycheck was delusional ray ducked him

Any idea when the interview at the end took place?
Thumbs up
Charlie barley positioned myself fighting like a fencer without a sword
@3:08 jheez!
Without a doubt he was the best of the "murderers row" boxers who was never given a title shot.
Ray Robinson just would not fight him saying to his trainer when a matchup was suggested "I thought you liked me and worked for me"
Boxing is the only sport I know of where an elite athlete can be almost entirely overlooked and/or forgotten.
Ezzard Charles generally regarded as the greatest light heavyweight of all time said Burley was the best boxer he ever faced.
Archie Moore regarded by many as in the top 3 all time light heavyweights after being beaten up and decked 4 times by Burley said “there may be a better fighter in the whole world than Burley, and if there is, I hope they never get in the damn ring with me.”
Dasaaaaaamn thats all the footage they had 🥲 atleast we got something
Where's the interview from??

Lot of Burley in Floyd's style
Hey Mistah Hanza, I believe this footage is from his fight with Oakland Billy Smith. Is there ANY other fight footage of Burley, ANYWHERE?
Nothing unfortunately otherwise it would have been on here bud.
Yeah I thought so. Very unfortunate. Take care.

Mixture of Roy and Mayweather. Legendary 💯
Nah it's the other way around Roy and Floyd are mix of burley
This was the Terrance Crawford of the 50s. Nobody wanted to fight this guy. Not even Robinson.
Best of murderers row
In the 40s him Charles .Moore.Holman Williams by far best boxers never got shot at 160 lbs title
Wish list, Jack Chappie Blackburn. Is there any film on this dude? He was one of the first boxers that struck and moved.
Unfortunately not
Thank you, keep up the great work. I love the old time stuff!
Best a prime Archie Moore twice
I see why Sugar Ray Robinson didn't want to fight him.
He Hits and Don't get hit
Reminds me a little like regis progeria
By watching his movements, Ray Robinson would win because he'll be the aggressor. If Charley fought Ray Robinson, he'll have to switch up his game plan and become the attacker but Ray Robinson has phenomenal footwork, he'll figure out his game plan eventually. I got Ray Robinson knocking him out by the 8th, 9th, 10th round.
yea obvious he would win this man is way to open he punches in with little defense of the hands
@@cmoneythemanthen why did he duck him.
@thatbronzeboij let's go back to April 30th, 1942 when Ray and Charley met each other for the first time and was on the same fight card. Ray weighed 146lbs that night and charley weighed 153lbs. They both knocked their opponents out in the 2nd round. Ray was a natural welterweight and barley was a natural middleweight. Ray watched Charley that night and said to his manager " I'm too pretty to fight him." Ray was the dancing master while Charley was the defensive master. Now, if they did fought, if Ray loss, he would've beaten charley in the rematch, but Ray robinson at that time before he went into the military was something special. Looking at thus footage of Charley, I believe 100% Ray Robinson wouldve beaten Charley because he saw him upclose and watched his movements that night of April 30th, 1942. Ray would've dazzled the judges with his skills and beat Charley.
Reminds me of Gene Tunney..
The closest thing we have to this master now is Shakur Stevenson. His mastery of distance, footwork and timing is second to none, not to mention that shuffle retreat is as perfect as I've ever seen implemented. 🤴🏿🥊
Shakur is just decent
Swear man only if shakur had his power & unpredictably orthodox style
One of the best if not best boxer not to win a world title
Kind of reminds me of emmanual burton
Interesting boxing style, he would fight latterly instead of frontialy, a very smart fighter who would size up and anticipate an opponents moves. Roy jones mimected his style
I think I see some Floyd Mayweather as well the way he jumps back-to the side too avoid getting hit
I think this where devin Haney and shakur Stevenson get they style from!
... Maybe even Andre Ward.
Burley was Roy Jones 50 years before Roy Jones
Roy Jones Jr. nothing new under the sun.
Year's ahead of his time you can see how he influenced Sugar Shane Mosley
Come on. SSM blatantly copies SRR. He even had the name ffs. But Charley's movements are fluid so I cant really blame you.
Him and Roy jones are similar
This guy is a mile wide!
Who was considered more "Skilled" with the sweet science aspect of boxing Charlie Burley or Holman Williams?
Both very skilled but the edge to Burley.
who is he fighting here?
Light heavy oakland Billy Smith I believe
The man ducked by sugar Ray Robinson and many otherd
No he wasn't ducked by Robinson, it's a myth. Go look at their records and you'll see that Burleys last ever fight in the welterweight limit was in 1938, that's w years before Ray had even turned pro. Ray's last fight at welterweight was in 1950. Their records never even crossed paths. Stop talking nonsense and study it yourself.

It was almost like he was on a slip & slide with that wide stance. You would get worn out by missing all your punches.... 😂
Which one is burley ?
The one that's not getting his ass kicked
So basically floyd Mayweather tried to emulate this mans style minus the power punching
Charley Burley, one of the few boxers who had a minimum chance to face modern boxers, i think..
Lack of technique in the boxing past days made this prodigious boxers the greatest of that time, but i think even an evolved boxer of this days could be in trouble against one of that very few boxers of the past.
I'm sorry for my english, nice video!
I think modern boxers would get walluped by the boxers of generations past. DOnt let the modern guys cut weight and actually fight at their size and the old school boxers clean their clocks. I think boxing is one of the few sports where talent has regressed over time with a few exceptions
@@androlibre9661 Regressed???
KINGJAYSWISHIII _ yes
KINGJAYSWISHIII_
I don't think "regressed" is the correct term. I think the term "changed" or "evolved" is better. Evolved doesn't mean that the newer form is better...it just means that it is what is commonly found today. For example....birds are actually EVOLVED Dinosaurs, but you can't tell me that an eagle is a better hunter than a T-rex on the ground.
Boxing before the 1920's had A LOT more clinching and "lost" hand checking techniques than boxing in the 1940's, but fighters in the 1940's preferred to use more explosive combinations with their footwork due to the common trends of that time. As fighters moved into the 1970's & 1980's, the fighter with more than 100 fights on their record became rarer & rarer. Thus, (to go along with better sports science) the super athlete became a more common occurrence. Note that athleticism & skills are different things. Thus, Sugar Ray Leonard was more athletic than Charley Burley, but Burley had additional skills & techniques considered uncommon/ lost by the time Leonard was around. But in all cases...Elite level is elite level...whether it's the 1920's or 2018.
TainoMantis I'd say devolved since the 90s. FIghters used to have extensive amatuer careers and lengthy active pro careers (8-10 fights a year). Upwards of 200+ amatuer fights, 60-80 pro record if not over 100. And those numbers go up the further you go back to towards the 1930s-40s. Fast forward to today limited amatuer experience and pro careers that are 1 maybe 2 fights a year once you crack the top 10. With a 30 fight pro career seems normal when back in the day that might have been your first 2 years. Now the ehalth and pay and well being of the fighters is better today than back then.......but the skill level has decreased ....in my opinion with a few exceptions. LIke Lomo and a few others
For other part, Robinson could beat him. Burley was excellent but lost with strange boxers and for that he hasn't the opportunity. Other times.
Burleys style of boxing was frowned upon in his time. His defensive style basically kept him from fighting most all the top fighters of his time. Not because he wasn't good enough, but because many feared he would make some of the top names in boxing at the time look foolish. Possibly the greatest fighter to never win a world title.
