I have a lot of the coin sets but I bought them on the secondary market at a greatly reduced rate. I don’t pay over $10 for the sets that have the half, quarter, dime, nickel and penny. For the Littleton coins in the plastic bag I buy them dirt cheap and leave them in the bag because it does have the grade on it. Basically I am saying that I don’t see anything wrong with buying those coins as long as you buy selectively and you buy smart. I do agree with you on the certificate of authenticity, in the old days people could use them in the outhouse. If you know what I mean. Thanks

Prepackaged coin sets are fun! Well, they can be. I've learned the hard way how to buy and sell certain coins. Experience is the best, and often hardest, way to learn. Videos like these weren't always around. So, I may have lost a few dollars early on but not any more. With such information at your finger tips there is only one person to blame if you get scammed - yourself. Thank you for taking the time to educate me a little more :)

That would have been great but impossible because I'm older! HAHA It wasn't funny when I was a little guy down in Austin, Texas, and I pedaled my bike about 8 miles from our house to a coin shop in downtown Austin. I had to do it and get home before my parents got home.
So I was pedaling my butt off, and on one of those Schwinn one speed balloon tire bikes. I got no help on hills. Just my 11 year old coin obsession. I had a few coins, but not many, to trade. I think I even had a 2 cent piece that didn't look too good, especially after I "cleaned" it. Then it looked horrible :( I took my few coins into their shop for my 20 minutes in the coin world before I had to hit the road back home.
They did trade my coins. Yeah I got a flying eagle coin, as I recall. But it didn't seem like I got much for my trade of several coins plus the little bit of money I had.
Then off I went, excited with my first coin shop trip, even though I felt sort of ripped off (I don't think I really was so much looking back - I had high hopes, though). But I did get home almost in time. My mother asked me where I'd been (she was just getting home from the University so it was no big deal) and I said, "Just out riding!" haha Not, "Well, I took a quick 16 or so mile ride into downtown Austin!!' hahaha

Should tell people coas are only good to the company that gives them. There are many companies that are good to there paperwork, but you need to know who they are first. Don't blindly trust. PSA, JSA, CGC are qualified grading companies. No matter how good the coa looks, know the company behind it first. It's good advice on the coins, need more people like you telling this kind of stuff, good idea and good job.

That ancient coin looks like something I see in the shows in the $5 "pick'em" box, and the kind I used to be able to buy for $100/100. In one of those $100/100 lots, I did get an extremely rare coin of the empress Galla Placidia once. I see some of those coins actually slabbed by the regular grading companies go for about $50 at auction, but that one in an envelope is a Christmas gift the non-collector buys for his collector friend and overpays for.

I agree with your logic on pretty much everything in this video except maybe the Silver Eagles, at least for cases like myself. I wasn't the one who bought the coin; my grandfather did. I "inherited" the coin in its packaging and all, and it's still unopened. I feel like taking it out of the package would mean I'd either lose it or inadvertently harm it somehow. Since I'm not the one who got suckered into buying it, I think I'll save it for a PCGS bulk-grade with other things I find and see what MS it gets. But that's just about the _only_ time I could see having these, to be fair lol

All this dose is limit the collectors that will buy them and yes lowers the value. To many that's enough to not buy it. But give any object enough time and the more rare it becomes thinking changes. The bad side to that is you may not be alive when it happens. But in the end if you enjoy it, how much it's worth no longer matters.

Those are the same Silver Eagle holders that I buy from the hobby shops to stack my silver eagles, Morgan's and peace dollars.

I've always wanted to buy one of those classic coin sets and break it open and fill it with high grades.Besides that you gotta assume that the coins are cleaned every time

You should not presume the art work holding the coins is safe & acid free.
Discovered this when a gift of dimes turned nearly black after less than 2yrs.
Like the man said...take them out, toss the holder.

My wife started my coin collecting in the late 90''s with 2 silver dollars purchased from a local coin shop. $100 each. I went to eBay and saw the same for roughly $50 each. Yes, they were in slabs. I never bought from a coin shop in my life after seeing that difference.

One coin shop and you stop. you can't judge them all by one.

Honestly if its not in a pcgs, ngc or anacs soapbox holders, i just buy coins raw or in the cardboards flips lol my grandpa kind of fell for those multi coin sets and told myself i will never buy them 😅

    Recommendation to coin collectors:
Do not buy a set of multiple coins for over 20$, unless all the coins are *VERY* underpriced.

The ONLY numismatic coin one should buy, that's encapsulated, is a PCGS rated with the number on the back that you verify on line at the PCGS site...Anything else is dubious at best... Sadly, those that get taken by these scams don't have the knowledge to know they're getting ripped off and they often never will until they go to sell it. I shake my head at noobs getting into silver buying stuff from TV or Magazines...Caveat Emptor...
