  • Pick a Toyota model and chances are its the best-seller in its respective segment in Australia. But that's not the case with the 2023 Toyota Fortuner 4x4 large SUV. Despite being based on the all-conquering Toyota HiLux 4WD ute, it has never found the same level of success or close to it.
With the Ford Everest, Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport firmly in its sights, the Fortuner is yet to catch fire Down Under, even with seven-seat practicality on offer as part of its off-road-ready body-on-frame package.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar gets behind the wheel of the Fortuner's flagship Crusade variant to find out if family buyers should be embracing it more. After all, not everyone wants or needs its more expensive Toyota LandCruiser Prado sibling.
