I'm not a part of the cosplay community, but I feel like selling a cosplay that you've made to other cosplayers is the best way to keep a cosplay alive. I'm always worried that whenever I donate something to the thrift store that nobody is gonna buy it and it's gonna end up in a landfill, but with how passionate cosplayers are and how niche the medium is, selling it is really the best way for a cosplay to stay appreciated. Somebody's old memories becomes somebody's new ones.

I find the idea of someone using my old cosplay as a base for themselves to branch off and personalise so cool.
But I don't have confidence that they're well made enough that anyone would be interested in rehoming them let alone buying them.

I gained weight during the pandemic and it was devastating to realize I couldn't wear my favorite cosplay anymore because it just didn't fit. So often we see cosplayers as our favorite character and forget there's a human behind the costume. I'm sorry you've had to deal with this.

Some costumes I have no idea if I squeezed myself into in the panic of not having a costume then coming back to them realising just how uncomfortable it was at the time or if I have grown out of them.
Sometimes you can exchange parts of a cosplay to get around it but other times it feels like the end of the costume and its never easy to let it go.

I found myself thanking my past self for screwing up every time I found extra fabric in a seam allowance, but my later (and thus nicer) costumes I generally got the sizing right the first time so the options are retire it or remake it.

Money is not finite. Space is not finite. Interests shift and change. Bodies develop. The fact that the cosplay community is so toxic that we can’t accept people selling cosplays is something we really need to step back and reevaluate.

I can really hear the emotions you're trying to keep in check. I'm sorry that we, as your fan base, have made this process so much more difficult than it needs to be. You deserve our compassion and kindness, and we have failed to deliver it. I hope we can be better for you. I appreciate you giving a voice to these emotions and putting this whole situation in a better context for us. You didn't have to, and I hope it helps us be more understanding to you in the future.

I've recently been to an Eco Cosplay workshop at a convention and everyone there agreed that it is great to give other people the opportunity to wear your cosplays. It does not only benefit you and the other person, it is also good for the environment to give old cosplays the chance to be reused.
I never would have thought that people can be so crazy about the topic of selling cosplays.

Sometimes, people really forget that creators online are also just people. I don't even get how you could be upset about someone selling something that *they* made. It's not like you're deleting the content about how you made the cos, or pictures of you wearing it. And even if you would decide to delete that content, that would *also* be your decision! I'm sorry you had to deal with this.
Thank you for sharing this with us. ♄

I actually posted a TikTok not long ago about the body change from your early 20s to late 20s. I had to clear out a bunch of my cosplays because they just didn't fit my body anymore, which is a natural part of maturing, but it was still really hard because I had a lot of memories with some of these cosplays.
I'm sorry for the reaction you've gotten, and thank you for making this video to talk about it!

I definitely feel this. When you have an online personality, people feel like they "know you" and feel invested in all the work your create. So when you chose to make a change, they freak out. But as someone who has also gained some weight and has sold costumes that I did vlogs on their creation - I too had people upset at me for selling the outfits.

I bought you sailor Armin cosplay off you like 7 years ago and I was literally going through my closet the other day and found it with my old cosplay stuff and it put the biggest smile on my face! You were a big part of my early cosplay journey and you absolutely don’t deserve this kind of treatment. People really need to learn to mind their own business because you don’t owe them anything. Over the past few years and especially through the pandemic there’s been an uptick in this kind of behavior from people on the internet and it can be very disheartening to say the least. I applaud you for addressing this in such a mature and concise way. Keep being your awesome self! ❀

I can feel you so much. My dad passed away two years before my mum also left me in 2020. I really had to limit myself to basically not replace my own household with theirs. Sure, there were thousands of memories of good (and bad) times in all of those items - but in the end, they were just items. Admittedly, I could not bring myself to sell a lot of it, so I just donated most. The thought that somebody found joy handling and using them somewhat comforted me. Difficult to explain.
So yes, you have to really consider what to keep and what to let go. New adventures await you, so in my opinion, it is good to let some old memorabilia go. Keep the beautiful memories of your mum in your heart and soul. And I am sure you still have some items you made together with her.
    Thank you for this video.

I can relate to this so much. I think this is so important. I bought youR AOT cosplay back in 2019 and used it like 2x, because I got pregnant and the cosplay never fit me anymore. I am recently gaining more weight as well and it breakes my heart to say goodbye to many cosplays I used to wear and have so much fun with, but I will simply never be able to wear them again. It is not something easy to accept and manage, and I imagine that it becomes 10x harder with everyone constantly asking you about it. I've had friends inviting me to group photoshoots that I could not participate because my costumes are now too small for me. Such a painful process :(

I went through this EXACT thing years ago. I gained a TON of weight and would eventually be diagnosed with PCOS. It was so traumatic for me between the weight gain, struggling with an ED because of the weight gain and my attempt to lose it, and doctors telling me i was insane for ages. I had to get rid of all my costumes because I could no longer fit in them and they were all ones my mom helped me make or made for me all together. It's a really rough thing to go through and I'm sure that this change in your body has led to so much stress and body image issues, but I cant wait to see what you have in store for us going forward. You can almost take out the word "cosplay" and sub any other in, and this video still applies... don't know why people are so rude and judgy, especially on the internet, but nobody deserves to be questioned... particularly people that so kindly share a lot of their personal life online in these lovely videos. I am looking forward to future projects because, like you said, you have years of experience and you developed your craft so much that you'll make so many wonderful cosplays that I can't wait to see. As for the body positivity aspect to it... bodies change and there's nothing wrong with it. You used yours as a canvas for your art and you should be proud of it. Growing, maturing, changing (inside and out) is a part of life and something to embrace, no matter what. I definitely admire your willingness to put yourself out there, share, build a community. Hope rude people won't change that!

  • @Ps_Logan
    @Ps_Logan Pƙed rokem +3

i agree. You cant just keep stuff for forever, that uses up space, where you could get money for new things that fit. I also cant wear complicated cosplays anymore or thight ones since i have a skoliosis. Its really hard to sell and some dont even want to buy them for the worth it price. even if its just a bought one.
People should just care more for themselfs instead of digging into other peoples Problems and making it worse without knowing. Some might not even had the meaning to hurt anyone, though you never know so they should have either just bought it and support you or keeping quiet . (probably have formulated some missunderstandeable to others x.x)
But yeah I am sorry that it had happened to you! (guess thats also a Problem when you are more known then other cosplaysers)

I'm experiencing body changes, I think due to stress + moving to my late 20s. It's hard enough dealing with weight gain, people definitely don't need to be making a big deal about selling and remaking costumes. It's something most people will go through if they cosplay for long enough, they just don't realise it.

  • @chacha_rouge
    @chacha_rouge Pƙed rokem +1

"the original is best" honeeeey, noooo. Especially in cosplay! We learn so much after each cosplay, so remakes often improve on our experience in cosplays and making cosplays
Also weight gain is a real cosplayer issue, and we have to either modify the cosplay IF we still have the right fabrics, or sell it to someone who'll give it the love we had for it!

Honestly, I needed to hear this. I recently gained weight out of nowhere with no diet or exercise changes (like I'm so much healthier and eat so much better and exercise more than I did when I was 18-20, but things happen when you age). Like you, I'm approaching 30, and am having a hard time accepting the changes. I've done the same thing, and have held onto cosplays that no longer fit me in the hope that maybe one day they'll fit me again, but holding onto them just makes me feel worse about my body. Selling them and accepting that they won't fit is definitely so much better for my mental health. You deserve to be treated with compassion. It's hard to sell things that we've put so much time and energy and love into, especially ones we weren't ready to let go of yet and you, absolutely, do not deserve any of the negative comments you're getting for selling your cosplays! I absolutely feel for you.

I saw the comments on Instagram and felt your frustration. Cosplayers aren't entitled to explain their reasoning to anyone. Cosplayers cosplay characters that vibe with the individual. Sometimes we just don't vibe anymore or more serious reasons. Either way cosplayers need to be given the same respect with their choices. People just need to look at it just like when you get rid of an outfit you don't like anymore or anything else, it's the same thing. We change and grow as people and it's normal.

I’m so sorry you’ve had to deal with all of this. I honestly have no idea why people are so quick to comment before thinking. Coming to decisions like that are always going to be hard, so people should be more mindful of that before saying something rude that doesn’t even involve them. Also- accepting that your body changes and that it’s normal and your clothes just don’t fit anymore is really hard too. I’ve been there before. Getting rid of clothes you love is hard enough without them being something you created. But in the end it’s good to have more room for new things you’ll love, and to let other cosplayers have the chance to own something they’ll treasure too. it really is healthy to be able to love the past, but also keep moving forward

I feel this, it's hard to get rid of/donate/sell hand made cosplays because of their sentimental value. It's also not good to keep them and then they turn into clutter and you have no space to keep new stuff. It's all an opportunity to grow & experiment in creating brand new things (like the cheesy saying, one door closes and another opens!) Even if you choose not to remake any cosplays, that's completely your prerogative and 100% up to you!

This video really resonated with me. I've been struggling with my weight since the pandemic, and cosplays that I loved no longer fit me. As I get older and am now in my early 30's, it's been hard for me to accept that it's normal for our bodies to change as we get older. For me, it's a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and mental health, and feeling like no one else goes through this, since I never see anyone in the cosplay community talk about it, is really discouraging. While I can't exactly sell some of my cosplays (nor have I tried tbh), seeing you talk about letting go of and remaking cosplays is really comforting. And I can relate with the part of just how much emotions they hold, my mom helped me get the biggest majority of my cosplay stuff, and I know I will more than likely never be able to part with it for that, but some people can and what people need to understand is it's that person's choice, yeah it's a lot of debating and back and forth and it hurts, but it's up to the person it belongs to. I’m so sorry this has happened, people really do get too attached to the fabric rather than considering the feelings of the person underneath. I retired my Aurora from professor Layton cosplay recently (I think you actually liked my post on it) and I’ve had a lot of messages complaining about it, even from people who have never seen it in person. My Aurora is falling apart and I can’t see out of it, it’s impractical and uncomfortable but yet people still complain that I don’t wear it. Bottom line is that some people struggle with cosplayer boundaries and it sucks. I’m so sorry again!

I'm sorry people are leaving crappy comments about this! As you said, you are free to do whatever you want with the things you own. I have been making cosplays for myself/my family for 10 years and there are two characters my husband is very known for. He changed sizes over the years (as people do!) and I've remade both of them. Yes, it can be annoying to remake something again. In one case, I took it as an opportunity to make the same design but way better because my skills have improved a lot. For the other I made a different outfit the character (Tenzin) wears which meant I need to make a new one of mine (Pema to match it). It's so much better quality and fit than the first one! Anway, I guess my point is bodies change, make what you love, and it can end up being a great way to see how much your skills have improved since the first version.

I had lost weight before the pandemic in preparation for a con but it hit and I had to store my costumes away. When an event came around eventually, I had to diet drastically and wear my tightlacing corset, which I built specifically to help shrink my waist down for me to lessen my food intake so don't at me, and I still didn't fit into my 1860s ball gown bodice which was part of my Princess Todoroki cosplay. I can get my arms into the sleeves since there's elastic in them but the back does not close anymore so I had to harvest the sleeves and the lace frill from the collar and appliques in front and sold the bodice for cheap to my friend who altered it for a stage play and I was happy to see it go to a new home. The skirt is still with me and it's easy to re-pleat a skirt and I made sure to get it onto a new waistband that fits my figure when corseted and if I was to shrink it down more if I wanted.

I'm so sorry that folks are giving you a hard time about selling your cosplays! It's a very reasonable, normal, and sustainable thing to do! Why not sell something and give it an opportunity to be loved elsewhere rather than throwing it away? I often sell a lot of my older cosplays I've made and my finished and unfinished 'proto-types' when I'm trying to practice as I iterate and make pieces better. I don't have the space to hold onto everything, but also selling them helps pay for materials for me to make more cosplays!

  • @riisumu

Before this started to get second guessed by people, I didn't even give it a second thought that you started to sell your cosplays. I wasn't asking myself like "oh is she stopping cosplay?" Or "did something happen?!" Because for me it's just VERY normal to get rid of old cosplays. To me it feels like a waste to have these costumes lying around and collect dust when I'm not wearing them for various reasons. Sometimes I cosplayed a character just to help a group out who was missing said character. Other times I just grew out of the fandom it came from and lost interest. I was never the person who wore a cosplay multiple times because I have just too much I wanna do, so I ran out of storage VERY quick in my shared apartment.
It's just a completely logical step to sell older costumes to make room for new ones. And then there are people who make you into a villain for a perfectly normal thing to do which just left me confused. Like...what are people doing with so much cosplays they can't wear anymore for whatever reason? Make wallpaper out of it and pin it to their walls? Hell nah, if I get the chance to rehome the things I spend multiple triple digits on, I do. It also helps with financing future projects as I have the policy to make new costumes mostly out of the money I got from selling old ones.
I'm so sorry the internet forced you more or less to speak about such personal and sensitive topics, and I hope you can quickly move on and put this to rest. I wish you the best in selling all whats still up and I'm very excited for Meg 2.0 since I'm sure she will be stunning with all the things you learned and improved over the years. I'm rooting for you!

So sorry to hear that. As a cosplayer i get some comments 'why don't you cosplay that character anymore?' and i never knew how to answer those. People's bodies change and our interests can change too. As you said, it is nobody's business and those commenters really need to think how they act online, since they don't really think how such comments can affect someone, it's awful. You are one of my favourite youtubers and i'm always excited to see your new videos. I simply do not understand why people feel the need to tell creators things They Already Know. You very clearly know that way better than we could ever tell you, and you know how much those cosplays mean to you way more than we do. My body also changed a lot since 2019 when I started cosplaying more. There are so many cosplays that I loved that no longer fit me, and so many that I wanted to wear to a con that I never had the chance to (some of which were dream cosplays that I wanted to do for a long time).
It's hard to sell them for me. First, there's the sentimental value that some of them hold for me. Especially my first cosplay I ever got, the first one I wore in public, and the three that I wore to my second con (because my first con experience was a disaster). Secondly, I have ADHD so having the motivation to take pictures, take measurements (or dig up the postings where I bought them to get it from there), and make a posting on multiple platforms Is asking a lot. I've only been able to sell one so far, and that was because I responded to a post of someone looking for a cosplay to gift their kid. That was very spur of the moment, and I sold one that hadn't fit me which I later bought a version that did.
So yeah, I understand your frustration. Admittedly, I haven't created a cosplay or had my mother make one for me like you did, but I still get the sentiment. It's sad that your community doesn't have the empathy to understand it.

(I always try to donate mine to Goodwill or to a textile recycling organization.) Like you said, you have a right to make your own decisions on your property, and bodies change to the point where some clothes do not fit anymore. Hopefully, the people who gave you a hard time about your decision to sell some of your cosplays will realize these things.

I've been slowly parting with old cosplays aswell because they no longer fit (and honestly haven't for a couple years at this point) and I too get really frustrated when I get DM's or comments questioning why I'd get rid of them :/ And it's so silly to me because the secondhand market for cosplays is in my opinion one of the great things about the community! Being able to give a cosplay that's just collecting dust inside your closet a new life through selling it is such a great thing to do! It's truly up to you when it comes to what you want to do with a costume post photoshoots, conventions, etc. Whether you're uncomfortable or unhappy with a costume in any way I think it's okay to sell it if that's what you wish. Also your body is beautiful and it's okay to want to remake new costumes or new versions of past costumes to best suit you. Plus there's always content to go back to of you miss a certain cosplay. It’s good to sell them and give the opportunity to people not being able to do such costumes and getting to have something you made, and the money you will have can help you to make new one you can enjoy.
