    Cosplay does not equal consent is so important. I've had people take pictures of me without permission (usually from people outside of conventions who wandered in). The main reason we dont want people to take pictures without consent is we cannot control what you are taking a photo of. It could be anything from unflattering angles and expressions, to out of cosplay shots without wigs or our prop, to more revealing photos we wouldn't want shared of ourselves because the photographer was at just the right angle to catch something they shouldn't. I know this gets harped on a lot but it's so infuriating to me so just always ask first.

    Also, very important, if you'll be wearing a binder at an event, wear it at home for increasing amounts of time WAY before the event to get used to it and to spot possible issues like chafing/shortness of breath etc. And please, buy a real binder (or a comfortable sports bra) in the correct size if you plan on bindning, since tape/bandages/homemade bindings aren't good for you and won't be comfortable anyway. Be safe and have fun

    Wiki How can be useful for people who, due to a mental issue or not having lots of friends, need patience and written steps to do the simplest daily things like cooking, cleaning the house or ironing clothes, because 'normal' people tend to see this as something so obvious that explaining it is almost unnecessary for them, consumes them time that is worth more to the learner (and if they do, they don't remember all the steps or omit several). It's a COMPLEMENTARY tool, because obviously if you want to do something more specific, you need to consult a specialist.
    Clearly, cosplay specialists were consulted for this article, judging for your reaction.

      Additionally, if it was a historically accurate version of some character's dress, it's vet likely you would need the correct under/ support garments. A corset or a stay, an undergown (before corset/stay), a crinoline, petticoats, etc)

    As someone who once cut and dyed my hair for a cosplay, it is a lot easier to use a wig to save the hassle of styling it the morning off and in the long run, saves you money if you want to cosplay this character again at the next convention. An advice I would actually give to begining cosplayer is if you have multiple characters you would like to cosplay eventually (even if it's far away down the line), try to see if there are similar elements to their costume that can be used or modified for some of them. For example, a pair of boots that can be used for multiple cosplay, etc.

      I am going to an anime con in march so as an acual cosplayer so do you think it would be bad/i would be too underwhelming if i wore casual clothes? (That will represent the character, of course im going to do styles) I am super unsure about it but i still dont have the budget for doing the actual outfits.

    • @poke-talia268
      @poke-talia268 Před 3 lety +5

      @@straighntuwu5603 I don't think it would be underwhelming at all! I once recognized someone doing a casual cosplay of a semi-obscure hetalia character at homecoming. Lol.
      In all seriousness, a lot of people actually do closet cosplays of characters. Usually, some people might not recognize the character, but others who do or who are dressed as the same character will probably form a small group with you to run around the con.
      That's how my experience has been with smaller conventions. Granted, I don't know how big the convention you'll be going to is.

    • @poke-talia268
      @poke-talia268 Před 3 lety +1

      @@straighntuwu5603 I don't know if you have wigs or if you're going as characters with similar hair to yourself, but matching the hair can go a long way for being recognized as a character.

    • @XouMuse
      @XouMuse Před 3 lety +3

      @@straighntuwu5603 There is absolutely no shame and it's not weird doing a casual cosplay! Not everyone at a convention wears costumes and it is not a requirement for you to have one in order to attend one. Of course, the answer might be slightgly different if you wanted to host a panel or be part of a photo-shoot, but even then, I did so in casual cosplays/not in cosplay at all in the past.
      As another commenter said, a lot of character can be found in their hairstyle, so if you have a wig/a similar hairstyle to the character you want to cosplay, have found or find the right accessories/clothes and then you're good to go! I hope you have a blast! It's all about passion in the end, being into the things you are and wanting to share it. Another actual recommendation is that thrift store are the friends of any cosplayers

  • @jlbeeen
    @jlbeeen Před 3 lety +15

    Rules for each con, and especially costume contests, are so important! One con I was at wouldn't let me bring a fake bow in with just a loose piece of yarn on it, I had to take it off, which was really awkward in the contest for posing, where I had no problems at a different con. And some contests do require you to make a certain percentage of your costume yourself. I really would like to go more into costume undergarments. I remember a few men getting in trouble for not wearing proper undergarments under a bodysuit, and with some costumes, you really need certain things, like tights, safety shorts, if you will need something strapless for the top, or even a corset or stay.

    The undergarment part probably refers to petticoats, corsets or pushup bras if the character is very... snacky.

    Maybe they meant foundation garments. Which also kind of sounds weird

  • @baralinni79
    @baralinni79 Před 3 lety +40

    I use mascara even when cosplaying male characters because I have very light eyelashes that get washed out or contrast weirdly in photos, esp. when wearing a wig darker than my own hair. I'll usually apply the mascara and then pinch my lashes with my fingers to avoid the "super ultra volume" effect

  • @wanessaribeiro3965

My friend politely asked her to delete them and if she wanted pictures she could have just asked and we would've cleaned up a bit and posed, but the lady got mad. Even tourists stopped us and asked us for permision, but locals were so rude!

    I'm really confused as to why you're confused with the undergarments portion, that is a huge part in most cosplays especially if you're wearing a bodysuit (especially if it's thinner spandex) or any top that's showing some skin. You need to make sure you have like some nude panties that a rent gonna bunch up or give you an awkward panty line, or a bra that matches the costume or is nude or strapless. If it's cold you need to account for skin colored tights to give you some extra coverage, pasties if you can't wear a bra at all where they have the deep v, or if the bra needs to be backless.
    Not only for women but also men, if a guy is dressing up in something tight they would need to make sure to have fitted boxer briefs, which may be different than what they normally wear.
    I personally thing that line was VERY helpful to new cosplayers because nothing worse than getting to a con, putting on you white bodysuit and having to go commando because you only packed neon pink panties and bras (bc maybe you don't own white or nude ones to be in with)

      Yea I felt the same. Or if you are a person who try’s to look exactly like the character and the only way to do so is use spanx or a corset. I know with my stevonnie I wore a spanxs with the shoulder straps so I could adhere the gem to that instead of my skin. It was way more convenient and I didn’t have to tap out at the con like I’ve done with other cons.

      Vibe, I had a VERY high cut bunny suit for a cosplay and couldn't find ANY Spanx/underwear with that shape, so I bought normal body shaping shorts and just cut them into shape. I also had to get a red strapless bra, so if the bunny suit's top slinked down (strapless), it wouldn't be as noticeable.

    There's one thing that this wikihow article missed, And that's: if you want to do a race bent cosplay, (white cosplayer as black character, for lack of a better example) it's ok to do so, as long as you're not doing it to be spiteful/racist. (As in, DO NOT do race face, stereotypical imitation, etc.)
    That's the only important thing they missed. (Unless of course they/you mentioned it, and i wasn't paying attention.)

    I’d like to comment about dying your hair for characters. Only do it if you were already thinking of dying your hair for yourself or you can cosplay a character based off your hair color. I cosplayed a gender bent Kyoko from Madonna Magic’s who had red hair mainly bc I had dyed my hair red for the past few months. All I had to do was dye it again a few days before the convention and try to not wash my hair too much to keep the color. The pictures came out much better and it was 100% better than if I bought a wig. Especially with how I styled my hair

    On contact lenses;
    Prescription colored contacts are more than fine to wear for a full convention. If they are prescription they are required to follow medical guidelines as eyewear. Non prescription colored contacts fall under cosmetics for guidelines and you probably shouldn’t wear them for more than a few hours.
    For ALL contacts remember;
    Soak them in a fresh case filled with contact solution for 24 hours before wearing them.
    Make sure they’re in the correct way (there ARE fronts and backs to contacts)
    If they hurt take them out.
    Bring eye drops.
    Talk with an eye doctor before starting to wear contacts they have good tips on how to be safe while wearing them and how to safely store and maintain them.

    If youre on a budget you can get some wigs from sites like ebay, wish, etc. They are super cheap the trade off is that they may not withstand a hair iron but can be styled using a steamer (the one used for clothes) if you dont like the hot water in a pot method. they wont melt since it's not direct heat.

    Very helpful things! Maybe could have added get psyched up by watching your character before heading out to con 😎

    For the undergarment things I think they mean specific types of undergarments for specific types of cosplay. For example, if you are wearing something skin tight, your underwear has to be seamless ones for a better look or if you are wearing something revealing, make sure you have tights, silicone bras, breast tape or pasties at bay because those are necessary. This is very important and necessary to think about especially for sexy cosplayers who shows a lot of skin so they would want to feel secure and confident in their cosplays. I think it's a very good tip, just not explained clearly.

    Hi Anya!
    Question: Do you have any tips for getting other people into cosplay? I want my partner to get into cosplay so I can share some of the things I love with him but I don't want to push him.
    By the way, I really love your content and you never fail to make me smile, please keep doing what you're doing :)

      Hi! I’m not Anya obviously but I’d love to answer! My boyfriend was into cosplay before I met him but kinda stopped when we started dating. I got him back into it by trying to help him find a character he related or was interested and cosplaying something from that show or film with him. For example he likes Gaston so I helped make him the tunic and I cosplayed belle with him. When we go to conventions he only really cosplays 1 day but I try to include him somehow with a character or something that he might be more interested in than me. He also wants to do Dennis from spongebob soon so I might do something with him for that or just be his hype man

    In my opinion, to think about undergarments is very important, cause it's making a silhouette. And with diffrent bra (for example push-up and bralette) the look would be diffrent. Also undergarments are petticoats and foam pads for hips (sorry don't know right word how to call it).

    I think an optional tip that they could put in there would be to always be positive & uplifting others cosplays. including yourself even if the other people are beginners. I feel like that should be cosplayer etiquette but I've ran into a few cosplayers that were rude or felt superior to beginner cosplayers or just cosplayers

    • @fire_phoenix04
      @fire_phoenix04 Před 3 lety

      Yes but it will be different than people who make their own, people who make their own will get commissioned by companies to cosplay their characters and stand out side boves at conventions this happens a lot at gaming conventions, also making a cosplay is a lot more impressive and will get more hype from the community so people are more likely to support them through things like merch and patreon, if you make your cosplay you can also enter contests and some conventions offer a cash prize. On the other hand cosplayers who are professional cosplayers but buy there cosplay have a harder time becoming professional and have much fewer options in how they can make money

    Hello! Question about makeup. Would you be able to use foundation a few shades lighter or darker than your skin tone to make yourself look more pale or tan? I understand that it would be unexceptable to race face, but if you stay close to your skin tone and just go a little bit lighter or darker is that okay?

    I really liked this video. Though with the sewing thing I don't really need to look up tutorial if I'm having trouble, I just usually need to go, "Mom I need help with this," and she's usually able to help me. This only applies to the sewing though, other things I do look up tutorials on.
    I just though I'd put this here both to be funny. Also to emphasize that if someone you know has the skill to do what you're unable to do, don't be afraid to ask. Hopefully they'll say, "Sure I'll help you with this." And if not, you're no worse off than you were before.

    Undergarments can also mean structured undergarments ie: type of bra, socks, petticoat, does it need a corset? Will it need an under dress (if see through).
    I’m doing Violet Evergarden but make it more historically accurate and I’ve learned undergarments are. So. Important. 😅

      I cosplay at anime conventions usually, but one of my cousins went to Comic-Con as the Great Pumpkin. As long as you believe in yourself and you respect other people and any laws, go for it at whichever convention you prefer. (Probably not a tractor convention or whatever, but hey, confidence is powerful.)

    I've been watching a lot of CZcamsrs who make historical costumes. For them the undergarments are really important because it's what creates the silhouette that makes the clothing fit right. Also any time you are actually trying to speak with your clothing you need to think about your undergarments, it can make or spoil what you're trying to say.

    how to cosplay my style:
    1. got to amazon
    2.search up who you wanna cosplay
    3.find the cheapest outfit (that has good reviews)
    4.buy it.
    5. find a good rated cheap wig
    6. buy it.
    7. put it on! There is no need to go through the trouble of making one when you have no clue how to sew. also I don't think makeup is needed unless your cosplaying somebody with a visible difference in their face. example: todoroki's scar.

      Consider buying products to go before foundation, something that hydrates and prevent the foundation of obstructing your skin
      I usually wear a moisturizer and sunscreen which is also important
      But as far as I know, that are specific products that are anti acne, and you can always look into cosdna.com to see specific ingredients and they acne factor
