My favorite controller is the Original Xbox S controller. It improves on the duke in every way possible. It fits perfectly in the hand, not too big but not too small, and has an amazing layout. I love the black and white secondary buttons and prefer them to the bumpers that are on PlayStation and future Xbox controllers.

Switch Pro Controller is the only S controller I've owned in my gaming life. It would be literal perfection in every aspect if it had analogue/adaptive triggers. Maybe next year.

The Boomerang 64 was just too powerful for this list.

Hands down best controller that I’ve used, scuf reflex, it’s just a ps5 controller w 4 paddles. But I am hoping valve will make a steam controller 2 based on the steam deck cus the SD is actually my favorite controller but it’s a handheld so that feels wrong, so definitely the scuf reflex for now.

I've had a PS4 for 7 years, and broken 5 dualshock 4 controlers. I've never thrown even a single one of them.

Pretty good. I use the 8bitdo controller. You should make a 3rd party controller list.

8bitdo is peak controller. But their driver issues kill the controller for me.
The wired pro 2 was my favorite until i destroyed it from overuse lol.
I now have 4 ps5 controllers because 8bitdo never pair to my steamdeck well enough

I think we have different lists, but I think it's because we prioritize different things. My priority for controllers is retro games, because I'm mostly a PC gamer.
my perfect dream controller is a non-existent mashup: xseries face buttons and bumpers. ps5 sticks. ps5 triggers (but slightly softer). no ps5 touch pad. snes dpad.
I wish the pro controller had better plastic and a dpad that wasn't awful. It could be a contender. The ps5 and xseries are pretty great for modern console games. I think the xseries has a slight edge there, too. I just don't play modern console games very much.
I can't type the rest of my thoughts without just writing my own tier list and video, and I don't want or plan to do that, so I'll spare ya :D

Switch Pro controller is perfect. I don’t get PS5 controller. Weird stick placement and so much travel on the triggers.

the gc and 360 controllers have awful d pads but despite that, I think they are the best

from my 5 years of using a xbox one s controller it wasnt that good
every time i got a new xbox controller it would just rip the skin on my thumbs which is not a good feeling to have
and the bumpers gave out so fast it was not even funny
the weirdest thing to happen with two brand new condition xbox one controllers i have is they both started to drift playing a flying level in spyro 1 remake
the xbox series controllers are better with not that sharp thumb sticks when new and the bumpers are better

As someone who grew up with these controllers it was really painful to watch. Don't get me wrong, the placement on a chart is mostly fine but you skipped so much crucial information. Snes controller was the first with shoulder buttons, psx introduced comfortable grips, analog Playstation was the first with built in rumble, Playstation 2 had pressure sensitive buttons, ps3 had gyro and was wireless...

    • @Veticia
      @Veticia Před měsícem

You also skipped genesis 6 button controller which was a must have for fighting games.

    • @Veticia
      @Veticia Před měsícem

As for my perfect controller I wanted to say an xbox 360 with a dpad cross instead of a shield, gyro, screenshot button and linear actuators for rumble... And I've just described switch pro.

It was a missed opportunity not to give some history on their relevance and influence at the time, and ranking them on their historical significance. But I guess my man is purely ranking them based on how he feels about them in the current year, which is fair enough.
To add to your comment, if this was my list (based on historical influence) I'd have put the Virtual boy controller higher - once of the first controllers to have grips and duel movement controls!

Okay watched some more, and he dissed the Dreamcast controller and now I'm in a man child rage 🤣You are WRONG! sir!
Jokes aside, good vid. It Was fun seeing someone else's option as a person that is very interested in how controllers have evolved over the years.

One thought kept rumbling in my head as you kept being wrong over and over: you're too young to make this list. The SNES had 8 buttons, it was the first with shoulder buttons, the original PS had 10 and was practically a direct evolution of the SNES. The gamecube wasn't the first with coloured buttons and was the same colour as its console, same as all other controllers. The Dualshock introduced rumble dual rumble (hence the name) and the reason there was an original controllers without analog sticks is that they were years apart, and for years most PS1 games wouldn't even work if you switched the analog functionality on (yes, it was a toggle). The Dualshock 2 had pressure sensitivity on every button and self calibrating sticks that wouldn't drift. The Dualshock 3 was one of the first default wireless controllers and introduced gyro controls... I'm sure I'll keep adding as I keep watching the video, but jesus christ. The list should've started maybe with the PS360 generation, lol.

let's be honest. the ps5 is tied at the top for modern games, and have been since the start. but sony have been copying their homework the entire time.
they slightly increment on other company's innovations. they give you a premium product at a price you can [just barely] excuse. they back it up with polish, and cramming in as much as they can at their price point. and this has been their niche since forever, since they got popular with cheap-but-good consumer electronics in the 80s.
ps1 hyped up devs because CDs were massively cheaper to manufacture, and all that extra space for textures and FMVs was enticing. 3d wasn't BRAND new in gaming, but it felt new to get it at that polish level and affordable price point.
ps2 hyped up consumers because it doubled as a dvd player. it was a steal for the price. but playing games was icing. and it did it really well, and it was respectable gaming hardware. but it still was basically the wii of the time.
ps3 was a repeat of the ps2. it was a bluray player. it was top in class gaming tech for the time, while still barely squeaking into the budget. classic sony.
ps4 was still top tier tech. it rid on its market position. it doubled as a HTPC/streaming box. it wasn't truly pushing any boundaries.
the ps5 is ... well, let's not talk about how much of a boring high tech commodity rut this generation has fallen into. it's sad, but PCs are winning.
across all time, whenever sony goes out on a limb they have fallen flat. they don't back it up with classic-tier games that showcases why the weird tech is cool. vr. eye toy. move controller. ps5 touchpad. all innovative. none of them truly bad. but all failed to fully capture and go above and beyond their respective gimmick. they can't do nintendo better than nintendo can. which is fine. they have their own (very popular) niche.
but back to their controllers. they have always been boring but as good as we can figure out how to do at the time. which is a great niche to be in. but they never were truly the ones doing the influencing. they were always the ones perfecting other people's ideas.
the SNES controller is s-tier if you have a preference for retro games tho. I could see being grumpy about that :D I use mine w/ adapters on the NES and PC, because it's just that good at what it does. and I've extensively used all the other controllers, for years. including 8bitdo. it's just that much better.
