- With the Panthers getting all the way to the Final, I wanted to look back at previous unexpected runs by lower seeds in the playoffs.

If Vegas finish off the West, the Panthers would faced the #1, #2, #4 and #5 teams. Winning the Cup? That would be the most impressive run I think I've ever seen.
Maybe 2012 kings is better
@@edited1325 I don't think it's as big of a spread as you're giving credit for, though I, even as a kings fan, think if convincingly done, could top the 12 kings. The catch is the panthers have already lost as many games as the kings did in their run : they posted a 16-4 record. And I do have to subtract some points for the panthers taking on Toronto of the perpetual implosions.
@@edschramm6757 17th team taking out 4/5 top 5 teams (1, 2, 4, and 5 seed) especially with the first series coming back from 1-3 against the best regular season team in nhl history. I think as long as they hoist the cup its more impressive, but I can see Kings fans still saying their run was more impressive if it goes 6 or 7.
@edschramm6757 imagine if Florida sweeps Vegas though. It would easily be the most dominant and incredible cup run ever. Beating 1, 2, 4 and 5 seeded teams with a 16-4 record. Coming back after a 3-1 deficit to go 15-1 the rest of the way would be bonkers.
thats a big IF. But for now NJ in 95 takes the cake for the most impressive run
I know I'm biased as a Habs fan, but that 2021 summer was something else. We were just coming off of extreme covid lockdowns we even had 8pm curfews at one point. That vegas game 6 it was the first time I felt true excitement/happiness in a long long time.
Great story Mask. I think all of us by summer '21 was ready to return to a 'new post COVID normal" (life will never be the same pre 2020)after over a year of most of us in Canada/US and Worldwide being in a global jail.
Still hate to say it but HABS run to the 2021 Cup Final has an asterisk being in that frankly very weak NHL North aka All "Canada" division. Still Price almost won them a title single handily so he deserves props.
I was shocked that team wasn't up there
And THIS is why don't you comment before finishing the video.. lmao
The fact that they started it all by defeating Toronto makes it extra special: crazy to think this is the only series between the two since the late 70's.
And then, winning against Vegas on St-Jean-Baptiste Day was so magical it almost felt scriped. I remember going outside with my Habs jersey after the game just to high-five random people on the streets of Montreal
I'm a Habs fan and I think I had the same reaction as UrinatingTree in his Stanley Cup preview video... xD Heh, to say I would've been happy with Montreal getting beaten in 5 against the Leafs in the first round, just, show they had something in them and win just one... Ooooh boy!!
Even though the Blues started at home against the Wild card stars in the second round, gotta have em as a cinderella run. From the worst to the first, definitely a great story.
That North Stars sweater is a thing of beauty. My dad grew up in MN watching them play in those.
The Minnesota North Stars jersey was then as it will be forever .... an absolute GEM 💎 🌟
I wish the Wild would go back to the North Stars, I like the Wild's jersey's but they can't hold a candle to the OG north stars look
@@blortflorington9165 The Wild just look like Christmas to me. Green and gold/yellow (not sure what they call it) is a much better look.
@@blortflorington9165 The Stars own the rights to North Stars.
I used to have a sweatshirt. I was a Gump Worsley fan.
The thing that made the Kings' 2012 run even more impressive was the fact that it only took them 20 games to win the Cup. They swept the Blues, beat Vancouver and Phoenix in five and beat the Devils in 6. Edmonton was the only team since the playoffs expanded to do it in less games. They did it in 18 games in 1988 but they were a powerhouse at the time.
They were so close to being a dynasty.
1995 Devils also won in 20 games as well
@@father042 True, as did Montreal in 1993, Detroit in 1997, and Colorado in 2022. That is why I didn't say the Kings were second fastest to a cup. They were tied for second and unless I'm mistaken they were the only 8 seed of the group. A real Cinderella story, which is what the video was about.
Kings will forever be the #1 greatest run!
1993, all 4 conference finalists finished 3rd in their division in the regular season.
I tell u what, those old school North Star jersey’s are a thing of beauty!! Wish we could get that logo back! Damn Norm Green!!! Grew up in Minny, remember both those Stanley Cup runs!!
2003 - JS Giguere puts up one of the greatest goalie performances in the history of the Stanley Cup playoffs on his way to winning the Conn Smythe...despite the fact that the Devils won the cup.
99 Buffalo was literally one man army Hasek
The dominator....
Thank you mitch korn
That 2012 Kings run was epic. They lost 4 games throughout the entire thing... as the 8th seed!! I loved how they played and became more than a casual fan of the team after that.
It's a incredibly admirable run and if I weren't an NJD fan..😂
Quick was the reason they won. He was on fire.
They didn't get to the finals, but the 2021 Isles pushing Tampa to seven, losing a one goal game in game seven.... pretty impressive
I wish it would’ve been habs isles in the finals that year
That was a really exciting series ! And I had not been following either team. 🏒🥅✅
That was the last year the Flyers made the playoffs and took the Islanders to game 7 in round 2.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, the 2021 Islanders are the best team to never win a Stanley Cup since the salary cap began
2011 Kings were most impressive. They were dominant in all facets despite being a low seed and had probably the most dominant goaltending performance I've seen.
The Kings on that run was absolutely unstoppable in every way.
As if touched by The Hand of God himself......
how is losing in the first round the most impressive?🤣🤣
You mean the 2012 Kings.
Even though it wasn’t all the way to the Cup I’ll always fondly remember the Wild’s 03 run. Being the last team to defeat Patrick Roy in a series is why I still root for them to this day
As a CO fan, but most importantly a Patrick Roy fan, fuck the Wild. May you be banished into mediocrity for the rest of your existence. All respect to the amazing work you provide for goalie prospects into the league.
Oh I guess so, eh! Never looked at it like that. The Wild beat Roy before he retired. Interesting.
Screw the Mild. clutched and grabbed that whole series because they couldn't beat us playing fair.
Pittsburgh didnt make Rinne look bad in 2017. He was just TOO GOOD RIGHT NOW!!
After my Flyers, I love the old North Stars jersey. Chicago and the Whalers are great too.
I remember the 91 run by the North Stars. They were a team that year that took a lot of penalties and during the playoffs, they goaded the other teams into taking a bunch of bad penalties and hence won the games and the series. I believe that with the 81 North Stars was Dino Ciccarelli's rookie season and he set a playoff record (at that time) for rookie scoring in the playoffs.
That 2010 playoffs in the East was insane, number 7 and 8 seed, Phillie and Mtl, making it to the conference final was surreal. As a Habs fan, I was sad about the outcome of that conference final, but oh boy, was that a nice playoffs year
I would have considered San Jose in 2016 a Cinderella run. They only had home ice in the 2nd round, but it was against the Preds, who were a wild card team.
2003 MightyDucks team is what cemented me as being a Ducks fan
Kariya - Oates - Sykora was an excellent line!
I was cheering for Ducks wanted to see Oates finally lift the cup 😢
If it wasnt for NJ being the team that beat them, i would agree lol
@Frankie Hresko Was lucky to get to know Oates. Helluva man. All class
That Ducks team was possessed and just ran up in to a buzz saw.
One great series.
Would the ducks have beaten Vancouver in the third round instead of Minnesota
@@yoholmes273 lucky you! I would love to meet him and have little chat about his career
Ducks that year deffo should have won it 😕
Not a Panther fan but I don’t see why people keep thinking this is some Cinderella story. It’s a team coming off a 58 win season where they won the Presidents Trophy and lost in 2nd round to the then 2x defending champs (who went on to their 3rd straight Finals)
They make a franchise defining move in the off season to address this exact time of year, and it’s worked. The only real take away is, a great team got off to a slow start after major off season move.
2005- 2006 Oilers Shannon. They knocked off the mighty Detroit red wings and went all the way to the cup. Absolutely nobody even thought they were getting out of the first round.
I was at the games in 2006 between Anaheim and Edmonton... As happy as was to see the Ducks advance to the third round, I knew it was Edmonton's time when Dwayne Roloson assisted Michael Peca's short handed goal in Game 1... and boy did that team get close to winning it all.
I was hoping for a nod to the 2012 Devils. Yes, LA is the story that year and the Devils had home ice against them in the final, but they were road warriors up to that point. Final was a Cindarella mirror match.
That's a good point.
I love that North Stars jersey. I wish the Dallas Stars added yellow, though I understand why it's not a good idea for them to replace black with yellow.
It's crazy because the 1995 Devils beating the Red Wings was the only real upset in the Stanley Cup Finals in the Modern era. We seen a few huge upsets in the Super Bowl. A few in Baseball and Basketball but none in hockey other than that one
I would call the 2019 Blues an 'upset" no doubt. Especially they was in last place aka #30 place in the entire league the previous Christmas '18. Ditto for the Kings first cup in 2012. With that said, you are correct that in the past 30 years or so, in a bit of a surprise there has not been as many "shockers" as say during the first 2 rounds of the post season.
And the fact that they SWEPT
@@fogalicious2644 Yup. Crazy times. Stevens really proved how tough was by taunting Kozlov after he hit him.
Carolina in 02 had 91 points, which would have put them lower than 7th seed Ottawa. Southeast Division truly was a magical place.
The Kings run in 2012 was ridiculous, mainly because how well Quick played. Plus they were up 3-0 in every series, swept the Blues and only had 1 road loss.
The 1975 Islanders are before this, and didn't make the finals, but that was a considerable Cinderella run. It was only their 3rd year in the league. They had one of the worst records the year before. Upset Ranger in the first round. Came back from 3-0 vs. Pittsburgh in the second round. Came back from 3-0 to tie the series vs. defending Stanley Cup champs Philadelphia in the 3rd round and lost game seven. All completely unexpected. And that season set the stage for their eventual dynasty team.
The Flyers series should have never gone 7 games. The Flyers were jobbed out of the winning goal at the horn in game 4.
@@Rockhound6165flyers always getting robbed arent we
Habs 2021
05/06 Sabres were projected to finish 26th. They made it to within 18 minutes of the Finals with 1/4 of the team injured.
Still cannot believe that happened. Sabres would have killed Edmonton in 5 games even with their top 5 D men hurt. But when your city is as cursed as Buffalo none of this comes as a surprise. No matter how impossible or unlikely, it will happen to Buffalo.
@@axe2grind244 How about Eichel about to win the Cup? I called it as soon as they made the Conference Finals... I said it's the Buffalo curse and he's gonna win it all. And here we are, two games away.
@@30AndHatingIt Yup, how shocking. ‘06 was their best shot at a cup, just like 2020 was the Bills best shot at a SB. Buffalo is the most cursed sports town in the world and nowhere even remotely comes close…..we make Cleveland look like Boston. They would have ran Edmonton off the ice 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
@@axe2grind244 Dude I've said that before... all these other "tortured" sports towns aren't even close. Oh no, the Chicago Cubs had a 100 year drought! Uhhh Chicago had another baseball team, the Jordan Dynasty, Blackhawks Dynasty and a Super Bowl win... I'm supposed to feel bad for them? Lmfao, the Bills and Sabres have over 100 combined seasons with zero wins... you couldn't flip a coin 100 times and land on tails 100 times, it's mathematically impossible.
LA Kings cup run in 2012 is the best ever.. winning the first 3 games in every series and going 16-4 overall to become the first 8 seed to ever win and the first cup for the organization.. that team was so unexpectedly dominant... they destroyed Shannons beloved Canucks in the year they were picked to finally win one for BC and all of Canada
The 2014 Kings run could be close to being considered a Cinderella run... they had to win three straight game 7's on the road to even make the finals... and that series win against Chicago was so emotional that the SCF felt like an afterthought...
There's something that people tend to forget about the Montreal run of 2021, the team that showed up in the playoff isn't the team that played most of the season. A lot of players came back from injuries in the last week before the playoffs. That includes Carey Price, Shae Webber, Paul Byron, and Brendan Gallagher. Add those guys in the line-up, you have a completely different team. So by the standings they looked like absolute underdogs, but by roster, they weren't all that bad.
Excellent expose - and I agree 100% with the Florida comments . What a team !!!
I remember the 68 pt Minnesota North Stars 1990-1991 Stanley Cup series! They were a plucky bunch led by G Jon Casey! Sadly, were defeated by the 90-some point Pittsburgh Penguins for the Cup on Saturday, May 25th, 1991! I don't remember how many games it took but it's the last Stanley Cup Final decided in the the month of May!
I'm so lucky! I have you to keep me company every day. Thanks for everything 😮
I'd have to say the 2004 and 2006 Flames and Oil runs were the most exciting for me. Those 2 runs were just complete excitement. Both teams put on an amazing run.....if not for the undecided goal that Gelinas scored, the Flames could have been the best run! Not to mention that Kipper was a freak of nature that year too!
I remember the 81 North Stars run! I was 15. And the Cancucks run in 82 with the best uniforms ever.
Go Avs
Love this channel always having interesting discussions
1981 and 91 were special years
Oilers 2006 spawned a whole new generation of oilers fans. We’re all in our early/mid 20’s and never saw any of Gretzky or those boys. But man.. was 06’ a special year in Edmonton. Confy finals last year was the closest to that feeling for us
Big bandwagon North Stars fan, after they knocked out Chicago in 91, scoured the malls in the lower mainland for a North Stars jersey (yes, before the days of online shopping) only found a white one but I love that green one!
Shannon. I've got you beat by 12 Years. I started watching in 1969, when My Late Dad put on A Game (Maple Leafs vs. Your Bs). My first Stanley Cup broke my heart. My Chicago Black Hawks (as Chicago was called back then) got beat by The Montreal Canadiens in 7 Games in 1970-71.
I love/miss this old North Stars jersey. Would love to see a list video of the best looking Stanley Cup finals - meaning the two finalists whose jerseys paired the best together.
91 between the North Stars and the Penguins has to be up there.
Of course, you can get a lot of classic jersey vs classic jersey matchups if that's you perogative. But the '99 Finals with Dallas wearing those beautiful star jerseys on the road and Buffalo with the Goat Head is one of my favorites for sure. Extra points need to be given when a finals has teams with completely different looks and colour palettes
@@estellegrignon 100% agreed! ‘91 saw neither team wearing red or blue for example, but rather lesser used colours at the time.
The Stars/Sabres final is another great matchup of classic jerseys. Off the top of my head I can’t think of any finals where both teams have completely different branding and palettes. The Stars/Sabres final is the closest I can think of though the Stars not totally deviating from the black and green look I guess… 🤷🏻♂️
Another angle could be which teams looked totally different in multiple cup finals appearances. The Ducks and the Canucks immediately come to mind.
Love the north stars jersey. They absolutely should let the Minnesota Wild use that logo whenever they want
Thanks for going all the way back to 1981. I missed the first 2 rounds because I was busy gestating in my Moms tummy.
Put a smile on my face when u turned the page and the 2006 team was there
I love the randomness of hockey. Florida vs Vegas.Baffling.
Believe it or not Tampa Bay qualifies under this standard in 2022… didn’t have home ice in any series against Toronto, Florida, NYR, and Colorado.
Probably the greatest Cinderella run of all time was when the clock was chiming towards midnight and her glass slipper came off, while she was running to her carriage before the magic spell expired . Well either that or the 2021 Habs because it was 3-1
lmao
The Minnesota North Stars uniforms was some of the best looking in the history of the NHL.
An added caveat for the 2010 Flyers was that they didn't even qualify for the playoffs until the final day and they needed a shootout to do that so yes, they were a complete anomaly that year. I would put their run even more improbable than this year's Panthers only because of the shootout just to get in then falling behind 3-0 to Boston and 3-0 in game 7.
In 2012, New Jersey was the lower seed in all of the first 3 rounds. Even though they played Florida in the first round who finished 8 points behind them, the Panthers won their division to get the 3-seed while the Devils were the 6-seed. So both teams in the 2012 Finals were in a way Cinderella teams. I believe the Kings and Devils combined seed of 14 is the highest ever in a Cup Final. The 2012 playoffs were absolutely incredible, arguably the best in league history.
That 2010 Flyers team was so much fun, wish they would have won it all
Great video.where did you get the idea?? Also name all the great goaltenders and thier coaches...any trends ??
Not a Minn fan but the old school jersey is pretty cool! 😊
Love the vintage North Stars jersey!
If Florida goes all the way (assuming Vegas is the western team) they'll have beaten 4 110+ point teams.
I am surprised that you didn't mention the Ottawa Senators in 2015, it was an huge miracle just making the playoffs, yes they struggled in the playoffs but just making it in ,makes it a miracle itself
2010's eastern conference finals was a battle of cinderella teams for sure. I even remember to this day the comic strip they made for hockey games in the Journal de Montréal, in the preview of that series, it was simply Cniderella with the Habs logo on her dress, b!tchfighting the Sleeping Beauty with the Flyers logo on her dress, I remember laughing so hard at it xD Montreal (8th seed, defeated the President Trophy winners and the reigning SC champions) against Philadelphia (7th seed, reverse-sweeped a Boston powerhouse). I was so mad that Philly reverse-sweeped Boston that year, I soooo wanted the Habs to face the Bruins in the ECF. Oh well...
2021 was a fun year
2010 Eastern Conference Finals was match up of two Cinderella runs. Both the Habs and Flyers were the bottom two seeds, Philly made the playoffs by the skin of their teeth. Montreal knocked out both Sid and Ovi, Philly came back from 3-0 to beat Boston.
What about the 2012 LA Kings? They were the 8th seed in the West, the only 8th seed to win a Stanley Cup. Combining the losses with OT losses and the lost more than they won.
What about them exactly? They're on the list
2004 was fun
hope the cats can complete that cinderella run hoisting some beautiful hardware in june 🤞🙏
Funny how, in so many of those Cinderella stories, it's the Leafs who play the role of the evil stepsisters 😅
Oilers had no business knocking off the Red Wings. And I love it.
2003 is the reason why I'm a Wild fan even if I'm from Montreal. Totally understand you Shannon.
I think the Panthers seeding is a bit misleading. After Maurice came in, I can imagine there were growing pains as the players had to adjust to a new coaching staff and different systems. They’re basically the same president’s trophy winning team as last years, if not better. Just took them a while to click, so they lost a lot of regular season games. Doesn’t look like that matters so much now though, does it?
Hey Shannon where did you get your North Stars jersey?
Quite a few impressive runs but only 2 of them managed to win
However none of the teams got swept and 4 took it to 7 games
Another facet of how insane the 2010 Flyers run was: they had to win game 82 to even make it in, and did so in a shootout. The Flyers, as a franchise, do not win shootouts.
2012 Kings 💪🏽👑
I'm trying to decide if I want pick 31 or 32.
‘06 Hurricanes, Game 7 against the Hot Oilers in Carolina….
We were wrote off every step of the way.
Did you forgot to talk about the Flames 2004 run to final
I honestly thought the North Stars were going to beat the Penguins after game 3 when Minnesota took a 2-1 series lead. The series was going similar to all their other ones and they were able to win those. However Minnesota seemed to run out of gas after that and Pittsburgh took over the series
No shame in losing to that Penguins team. Ridiculous amount of talent
Honorable Mention should go to the New Jersey Devils in 1988. They never came close to the playoffs before then. They barely made it as the final seed in the division and upset the Islanders and Capitals before getting eliminated by Boston in seven games in the infamous Don Koharski Doughnut Series.
2019 Blues werent Cinderella, they were a team for the ages. Look at the talent of that lineup top to bottom.
Look at every cup winner. They all have hall of famers. 2019 St. Louis blues have zero future hall of famers. Definitely a Cinderella team
And I’m a blues fan. Petro and tarasenko are not going to be in the hall of fame
Don't know about a 'team for the ages,' but they certainly fall under a different category than Cinderella. They were built for a long playoff run and it can be said that they were playing up to their potential in the end, in sharp contrast to the woeful underperforming in the first half.
@@ju5t1n26 don’t have to have hall of famers to be great. Every single line, every single D pairing was productive. I’d put that blues team against any other cup champion of the last 30 years. Scary depth.
@@bluesdemitra38 but you do need at least 1 hall of famer to win the Stanley Cup, except for the 2019 St. Louis Blues. Look it up
You mentioned the Red Wings being one of those teams that people think of as not losing to underdogs. Look at 2001. They were a #2 seed in the West and lost in the 1st round to the Kings, 4 games to 2. The Kings even went so far as to take Colorado to 7 games in round 2. Not a Cinderella run but still pretty exciting for the fans.
I would love to know what the vibe in Detroit was like heading into the 1996-97 season
11:24 yes!!!! Reference to the Tree!!!!!
After Shannon's video, Bettman is considering upping standings for teams who finished up to 4th overall, can now be considered a Cinderella team in the play-offs.
only NJ and LA won a cup with their cinderella run and NJ was stacked with Conn Smythe Claude Lemieux, HOFers Brodeur, Stevens and Niedemayer. thoses teams won multiples cups also.
i don't see florida in that group
Cinderella👠the slipper still fits
2019 Blues not being on this list is a robbery
2006 oilers 8th seed made it to game 7 of the finals
2010, if MTL (Halak) beat PHI, they're on that board with a better story. Defeating WSH ranked 1st (They had a 3-1 deficit in the series and won 3 straight to win in the end). WSH was hot that year and they blew it... Then MTL drop PIT, stanley cup defenders in the 2nd round. PHI was much more physical in the 3rd round and ruined the dream :)
What about the Kings 1st Cup run? When they became the 1st 8th seed team to win Lord Stanley’s Cup?
I miss the 1-8 seeds. Imagine if they did the old 1-16 today? Would we get different results?
280K Go THG !
I called LAs first cup win when they hired Sutter that year
I actually felt bad about pointing out the Blues in the draft lottery video like a month ago because I said you didn’t mention this but I meant to say it like you didn’t mention the stuff I added but I think it came off like you not mentioning them at all. I appreciate you mentioning why the Blues don’t count here
i know your criteria just barely knocked them out of being fully covered here, but the Panthers 1996 cinderella run should be there. they played & beat #5 seeded Boston (#8 overall), #1 seeded Philadelphia (#3 overall) & #2 seeded Pittsburgh (#4 overall) before succumbing to #2 seeded Colorado (#2 overall). it's still ridiculously impressive
Do you think it would be more fair for each series to start with only 1 home game instead of 2?
He mentioned it in a previous video, the answer is always 2 instead of 1. Should be for all sports
1999 buffalo sabres. Hasek led run to the finals. Score a goal or two and hasek stops everything
@@matthewdaley746 I know! I am looking back at this 24 yrs later. I am neutral on sabres. Their runs in 1998 and 1999 playoffs were amazing.
For the definition of "Cinderella run" not only would I consider starting on the road a part of it, but also the seed matchup. Upsetting a team maybe 5 seeds above would be a factor, like a #8 beating a #1, or a #7 beating a #2. Wouldn't hafta happen in every round, but certainly some kind of upset like that during the run would be part of a Cinderella run.
06 oilers best Cinderella run ever
The Panthers have been on such an incredible run since coming from behind to eliminate the Bruins. They will be a tough out in the Cup Final. They have every reason to believe in themselves that they can win the whole thing. Assuming it's Vegas they meet in the Cup Final, the Golden Knights will likely be the odds-on-favorites, but that suites the Panthers just fine & dandy. It should be a heck of a Cup Final for sure( I know it's not officially set yet, but, hard to see Vegas not coming out of the West over Dallas ).
